Focal Splits Vs Alpine

hey guys

might not get many hits or responses but after opinions anyway....

looking to spend around the $800ish mark on front splits.

i have been a devoted alpine sound man for around 13 years now and they have never dissapointed. so with that in mind have been looking at the 17pro. also have been looking at focal splits lately. namely the 165v30 and 165krx2.

anyone had experience listening to these speakers????

if so what are your thoughts/opinions.....pro's cons etcs

Focal for the win.

German handcrafted speakers, warm sound(with the right amp) and would choose em over alpine any day.

Theyre up there with the Previous models of MBQaurt and German Maestro stuff!

would also reccomend a Rockford i360. with a 24 band eq for each speaker you can make the mid range speakers sound better than the top end.

you say focal all the way.....im reading reviews and starting to think the same

not sure whether i want to spend the 550 on v30 or the extra 400 say for the krx2(around the 900 mark). by the way i can get the x pro for same price as the v30

would i notice difference between the v30 and krx2??? almost double price thats all

depends on how sensitive your ear are. being an engineer for this stuff the slightest difference will piss me off over time. hence the rockford i360.

but to alot of others, the entry level will sound the same as mid. and mid will sound the same as top.

Its vital to know the amp your getting, it will change the sound of the speakers dramatically.

I have some brand new German Maestros splits for sale cheap $350 delivered. i bought em for i think $700 mark and they are genuine. might be worth it for you if not competing!!

honestly if your not competing, you wont notice any difference. i bought midrange maestros for my previous car and made em sound like the $1300 top end model lol.

again alpine amp..........had four of these already since 98 and never ever had a problem......i know they are a bit pricey etc but i trust the brand

amp will more than likely be pdx-f4

also the v30 vs. your maestros for sale??

well the PDX are good.

v30's go i think about 10db higher(if that) and run 20w more at normal but 10-15w less at peak.

keeping in mind i am trying to sell them, but also in mind that if i was sold ghey speakers i would locate n kill the person lol.

look Focals yeh i wouldnt look twice, they would be mine. Hand Made warm sounding and a respectable brand with relaibility(be careful of ebay sellers). But if it came down to it I wouldnt be buying $7-800 speakers, when i could find something near enough, for $350 delivered I would know what im looking for..

I'm not sound engineer but I've had a couple of decent home and car systems and I try to keep up(more with home sound now) I've always been rewarded by following the rule that speakers must come from a speaker company, same for amps, Alpine can provide the complex electronics (source). As for spending money on amp vs speaker. Generally the influence of speakers is by bar the most important aspect of any half-decent decent system (so spend on good speakers and install over slightly better amp unless required).

I'd agree with Aaron that $900 for splits is a bit much in 2011. Maybe back in 2000 it was needed but things are soo much cheaper now I couldn't justify it.

Current (post 2005)model specifics I have no idea but are you sure you can't fit something a touch bigger than 6" in the doors???? How about a shallow 7" or 8" to bring the upper bass forward in the cabin? (AFAIK this type of thing can't be fixed with a equalizer).

FWIW I currently have alpine head deck and proper splits in the doors (my own MDF mounts and Jaycar amp).

Having currently in my ute a Set of Focal 165VR's i can assure you that im currently waiting for Freeway car audio to have their yearly sale to buy another pair,

The best speakers i have had to date.

Focals are made in France not Germany,

polydax in france makes a lot of speakers for others.

not my first choice for that kind of money, actually not even in my top ten for the money

some half the cost sound better and perform better IMO

Alpine, over rated- type R average speakers , the top of the line aren't made by Alpine, but another company .

go with Vifa, Morel, DLS, Dynaaudio, Hertz, SEAS, Rainbow and build your own crossovers to save lots of dosh

the vifa from jaycar are just as good or better then Alpine, Focal with proper crossovers/baffles and installed right a 1/4 the cost

Audiocontrol DQT like the pair in my car has 31 bands of Digital EQ per speaker with 8 program modes , and 13 volts pre amp out per channel

Audison Bit one or 10 is another option new to the marketplace

Alpine has one too.

MB Quart sounds nice but cost a fair whack for paper cones. . the 3 way splits sound really nice, but a bit harsh on the top end

MB Quart only recently (4years or so) went to paper cone when they were taken over by the Chinese. thats what i was told anyway..

as im aware German Maestro bought the original design of the speaker and took over from there!

That's the brand of splits I had in my first car, back 1997 with a Rockford Fosgate amp. Thanks sapphiregraphics, you're signature reminded me.

Sorry, nothing more to add. Except speaker choice is really up to personal preference. Scientific measures are as useful to comparing speakers as they are to picking the right shirt for a date.

yes lanzar, until a new sponsor comes on board..lol, they sell stuff from the cheap side to the extreme. a new 24,000 watt @.5 ohm spl mono block amps for the bargain price of 24k.....6- O gauge power connections on it

and other amps for 60 bucks

once again a company that uses someone elses curcuits with lanzar on it. very common these days after the GFC

the speakers arent as good as some others but the cost was right..lol its more about the install to make cheap equipment sound good

oh really lol.. i wasnt even born hahaha.. the German Maestros i have arent paper cones but as i said they are the original design of the MBQuart discus range(although my ears tell me theyre much better)

Pulp paper is still used in some of the most expensive and best sounded speakers in the world. I think the real problem with paper cones is that the material itself can be destroyed easily due to poor environment conditions and moisture.
