Hi guys, ive got an r32 gts4 with an r32 gtr rear diff and standard front diff. The standard rear diff was driven by the previous owner without enough oil, so i know that diff is no good, it really grinds if you try to drive with that diff in. I have an r32 rear diff to get me by until I can replace with another gts4 diff. I was wondering if the crown and pinion gear ? unsure if they are the two parts, but are they interchangable with the gtr's crown and pinion gear?

There is an issue with running the GTS4 and GTR diffs, they have different ratios.

I know there is an issue, thats why I am trying to get the gts4 diff back. I am currently RWD.

Is the gtr diff mechanical and the gts4 diff viscous? Are the crown and pinion gears interchangeable anyway?

You'll have to check the front diff ratio. The GTR is 4.1:1 so the previous owner should have changed the front diff to suit (unless he is available to be asked). I think the GTS4 is 4.3:1

Yeah, I know the front diff is the standard gts-4 diff, 4.375, but i cant run 4wd cos of the rear diff issue, i have the standard diff out of the car, i wanted to swap the gears over to the working gtr diff i currently have on the car, i was wondering if the gears are directly interchangable, even though one is viscous, one is mechanical.

You will be able to swap the GTS4 gears (crown wheel and pinion) into the GT-R diff. But you must do BOTH - you can't just swap the crown wheel OR the pinion.

There wil not be any problem with the GT-R centre being mechanical LSD and the GTS4 being a viscous LSD. In fact, you are probably better off with the GT-R's mechanical centre,

Copy that, I changed my rear diff gears on friday, from 4.11 to 4.375, no problems at all!

Much better to drive, 3rd gear is way closer to 2nd now and the whole car fells much more responsive!! Win Win

I asked a diff place in western Sydney if they could check the condition of the GTS4 diff on Thursday, as i know it had been run without enough oil which caused the grinding noise. The guy said

everything is faulty, crown, pinion, bearings, all without even looking at it. It hadn't been run with no oil, where is definitely an issue because it is grinding but I was hoping maybe

the bearing has failed, and the crown and pinion would be OK. He would not even open it to have a look, is there anyone who could possible help me diagnose what parts are faulty? I know the

bearing is definitely gone, but I am hoping the gears are OK, it wasn't driven around for long after the noise occured so I am hoping no shavings damaged anything else. Anyone help?

Must be Superman (has X-ray vision) if he can tell the condition without opening the unit!

You just need to take off the rear cover plate to inspect the innards. Then find another diff specialist to confirm or deny the condition of the crown wheel and pinion - these are the only bits that need to be in OK condition.

OK, so me and a mate have finally taken the gts4 diff apart, I can confirm that there is physical damage to the bearings and cage which sit at the rear of the crown gear (where the drive shaft meets the diff). There seems to be no damage to the main gears, with no scoring on any of the main contact surfaces, and little to no wear on any moving part. The crown gear seems to be seated in the housing quite well and blunt force does not seem to dislodge the casing. Also, I cannot see how I can remove the faulty bearing cage. From what I can tell only the one bearing cage at the very front of the pinion is faulty.

So three questions, how do I remove the pinion gear from the diff housing? How do I remove the bearing cage for replacement? And where could I get a replacement bearing cage from?

I also have that gtr diff on the car currently which I could possible salvage parts from, but I would rather get a cheap gts-t diff or something for the parts I require, so if the bearings are the same part that would be cool.

Thanks for the input

From memory you take out the crownwheel and then knock the pinion in but before you take to it with a sledgehammer get someone to confrim that!

Here's a bit of a long winded how to (I'm a bit rougher myself) - you can put it back together yourself but ideally its properly set up by a diff shop or you could just get a complete diff and swap it over:

    • Hey everyone, I recently bought myself a 2001 Nissan Stegea M35, and I've had a few issues that I had to fix, my car would start intermittently and I had a bad rocker cover leak, after a couple days of looking I finally found a part number that interchanges with the OEM starter as the OEM starters at $1300 and I can't afford that, this starter was only $270 and I replaced the start and still had the same issues, I posted a video asking for help online and it went very well, some guy said it was probably a bad ignition switch so I took my dash apart and turns out my ignition switch was half screwed in and was loose, once it was tightened it fired right up, I found a local place called "Boost factory" and they sold me a part of OEM Nissan rocker covers, they were $600 which was a shocker but I couldn't find them anywhere else, so I installed them and fixed my oil leak as the old rocker cover was cracked and warped, I now need to replace my boost air inlet hoses as they have some cracks.
    • I am being real ocd and do not want to make amy mistakes so appreciate all help provided. I am overly cautious so asking for opinion even if i know the answer   few questions,   1.re tensioner, should spring be greased lightly?    2.tensioner has two washers , one pressure washer and other has recessed/ seat. I am going to put the recessed one facing tensioner where edges are cut out and pressure washer on top   3. my car has custom triger kit sold few years ago by guy who initially built the engine. I moved the crank gear and it moved in and out easy, only way to remove belt is to slide the crankshaft gear forward which I did. I have seen these being very tough to move , anything to do with my woodruff key?   it has a crank sensor shown in purple which I assume reads from the 12 teeth position mounted to the crankcase gear   4. timing belt doesn’t have arrow stating front or back just a arrow which I think is direction of rotation . Do you agree?   5.i figured out why my crankcase cover was worn as there was no washer installed over the crankcase cover before the harmonic balancer was put in place. It is missing, anyone knows the part number? • CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System) has existed since the 80's. I'm looking into buying a Hummer H1 and they generally included it.
    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
