^^^ +1 There are many situations where if he was in 3rd in the Evo he should select 2nd in the GTR. (Evo have a fat midrange, GTR more top end)

It seems the guy drives the GTR with the same style as he does the Evo. To me you approach corners in an Evo as if it is a well balanced FWD, the GTR you drive as if it is RWD. He also needs more revs in the GTR (plus an exhaust and remap).

Interesting. The evo 7 that I drov I seem to rememeber it having fairly tall gears.

the first 3 are short the others get a bit longer and its very noticable the difference between a 250kw evo and skyline you grab 1-2-3 in an evo feel like you are going to get mashed through your seat, get to 4th and it feels like someones taken all the power away. 0-100 they are brilliant 100+ the skyline walks away.

Evo's are great cars. In practical day to day situations they are more useable then a GTR

That depends on what your practical day to day situation is!!!!

If your cruising at 110km/h Adelaide to Sydney for up to 10 hours at a time I'd probably take the GTR, if your in traffic or going up tight mountain passes then the Evo.

Horses for courses IMO, and you choose the car that best suits your individual needs.

I agree with a certain amount of whats said, a lot of it comes down to boost level and gearing though - EVOs get a huge boost of torque from the good turbo combination and big boost (at least 16psi stock?) they run through the things. A GTR sucking >16psi becomes quite a serious device.

Yes they would be better with a 3.0L BUT.

Evo VI weight ~1300kg with 2.0L = 650kg/L

R34 GTR weight ~1550kg with 2.6L = 596kg/L

So while I agree that bigger engine would be better an Evo needs a 2.2L to be equivalent capacity per weight to a stock GTR.

(I'm not sure about the Evo VI midrange boost but the IX runs 19psi midrange and the X runs over 21psi - hence the torque.)

Interesting review. I do think the stock GTR is way undertuned. Needs some steel wheeled turbos, more boost and a tune. Should have come out of the factory like that, then you could do some better comparisons.

If he didnt know that when he bought the GTR then he doesnt deserve one anyway!

Anyway I can remember having fun in a Torana GTR years ago [amongst other candidates], so fun is relative. And cruising in a Pontiac Transam, or any bigger heavier car as opposed to a light short wheel base noddy.

I agree. Would that I could afford a car for every occasion... Man I would have some amazing rides :D

put an exhaust on the evo, then put an exhaust on the GTR and wind it's boost up to 16psi like the evo. suddenly the GTR has 220kw. then give both a re-tune and cam gear ajustment and the GTR has 250+kw at 15psi and the evo will have 200kw. suddenly the GTR is woken up and a much angrier, sportier car to drive. in factory standard form the GTR is very much strangled to death with very low boost, small exhaust and conservative tune.

Some facts from an ex evo owner:

Evo 4, 5 and 6 weigh 1350kg

Evo 7, 8 and 9 weigh 1450kg+

Stock boost on all models is 14psi

Gearing depends on what model you have and what country you got it from. US and European models have taller gearing while Japanese have shorter. Evos 4 to 7 have a close ratio 5 speed box, while ADM 8s have a Euro spec 5 speed and JDM 8s and 9s have a cruise 6 speeder. The close ratio 5 speed is the one you want.

My Evo was a 4, which has the smallest turbo of the 4-9 range with a td05hr-16g6 9cm, dry on a weighbridge it came in just over 1300 and it had no side intrusion bars in the doors. I had an aftermarket dump pipe and no other mods. Another member on this site with a R32 GTR had his tuned with a HKS cooler, hard pipe kit, full exhaust, pods and heat sheilds, twin plate, 16psi and 264kw atw is a personal friend and had quite a few goes at the evo. I admit he had some advantage over the 160kmh mark.... Enough said about straight line speed really. Not speaking for drivers yet there was no comparison through the royal national park, having driven it myself plenty I can also say it is a cumbersome car where the evo will simply dance and prance along asif mockingly (in certain situations).

On the open road I am confident the GTR is the better car, and its even better to drive around at traffic speeds. On a larger sized race track I could also see some stability and speed advantage in the GTR.

Apples and oranges really, but to the average hills enthusiast the evo is near second to none.

Finally, Someone else who has noticed this.

God people bang on about the evo's being light weight but realistically they arent, not for displacement and after about 6 they aren't that Light period !

I will also say that the EVO comes with a much better suspension setup (more track oriented) then the GT-R and they are a much much firmer car.

The beauty of the evo is it's zippyness and get in driveability not worrying about breaking shit all the time-ness.

They are a truly turn key affair.

Well according to specs I've seen a std Ev0 6 GSR like mine weighs 1360 kg and the RS 1260 Kg .

Yep the gearbox ratios are close 1-2 and 2-3 opening up 3-4 and 4-5 , the RS version is supposeed to be close 1-5 .

I particularly wanted a factory std car because you never know a base line without driving an as sold example .

This car gave me faith that a manufacturer can build a production car that genuinely steers stops and goes real well out of the box .

The mind set I had when I bought my 6 was that I wanted something pretty good without spending big money , at least initially . I've been down the road of major re engineering and its the best way to burn money . Someone I respect a lot said try to find something thats what you want standard and buy that . Can't beat production engineering on price .

As I've said in the past I haven't been in a GTR but its not hard to imagine your R33 GTST being even heavier and having less squirt down low .

To me what happens much above licence burning speeds is irrelevant in a road car and it must have good performance up to that point . I'm well over putting up with cars that have no part throttle squirt and go like an oil burning square Camry up to 4000 revs .

Sort of firm but not bone jarring suspension is good and you have to love razor sharp fast rack steering .

My 6's brakes are absolutely the best I've ever driven and I had to do a really extreme test to make sure the ABS actually worked .

You can do subtle performance mods to Evos and made the strong mid rage torque ginormous without losing any low down squirt whatsoever . Exhaust injectors pump and flash tune . Add E85 and destroy nearly anything to 100 plus .

The mods tend to be a lot more straightforward than I think GTRs are and you can actually use the performance every day . Lots of new and 2nd hand parts available and working on the things is not a tooth pulling affair like GTRs appear to be .

As most of you know I have an S2 GTS25T and while its not that much heavier than the Lancer its nothing like as nimble . Even with the SK Whiteline Bilstein suspension the Skyline is low and lacks suspension travel and the steering is not nearly as precise . The brakes feel wooden by comparison and its very easy to find the limit of traction even with std turbo performance .

I don't like to say that the Skyline feels slightly clumsy weight wise its just that things don't seem to come to heel as obviously as they do in the Lancer .

The R33 is of coures larger/longer and more roomy but not really on par with the Mitsys Recaros for staying put .

I think the truth of the matter is that Evos are a notch up overall and it makes them arguably harder on the senses and maybe not as relaxing to drive .

I think Evos are the sort of car that you hide away most of the time and let off the leash when the preditor in you surfaces . Mine isn't daily driven and neither is the R33 though the old subie won't last forever .

I'm pleased that the Skyline fraternity here can appreciate other makes even if their Nissan is first car wise in their life . Mine was for a few years and I still see good in both my hide aways .

I find it amusing how paranoid the Rexers get when my lil white Rex killer is out and about , I don't provoke them but they go crackers anyway .

Search the U tube vid Evo 6 Vs Evo 9 , I'd like a spin with the 5Th gear bird as well ...
