The bible was written 2000 years ago by people who are dumber than we are today. Then it was re-written. Translated. Re-written again. Changed for the sake of convenience etc.

Catholic and Protestant bibles are not the same. And the catholic church has dismissed the notion of a devil - Vatican council II accepted that the 'devil' was created to keep the population fearful.

And as for God burying fossils to 'test our faith', I think Bill Hicks said it better than me...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrZcztxRquo

“You believe the world's 12 thousand years old? "That's right." Okay I got one word to ask you, a one word question, ready? "Uh huh." Dinosaurs. You know the world's 12 thousand years old and dinosaurs existed, they existed in that time, you'd think it would have been mentioned in the f**king Bible at some point. "And lo Jesus and the disciples walked to Nazareth. But the trail was blocked by a giant brontosaurus...with a splinter in his paw. And O the disciples did run a shriekin': 'What a big f**king lizard, son of rajab!' But Jesus was unafraid and he took the splinter from the brontosaurus's paw and the big lizard became his friend.”

“Dinosaur fossils? God put those there to test our faith." Thank God I'm strapped in right now here man. I think God put you here to test my faith, Dude. You believe that? "Uh huh." Does that trouble anyone here? The idea that God.. might be...messin' with our heads? I have trouble sleeping with that knowledge. Some prankster God running around: "Hu hu ho. We will see who believes in me now, ha HA.”

“A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. You think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a f**king cross? It's like going up to Jackie Onassis wearing a rifle pendant.”

“Christianity has a built-in defense system: anything that questions a belief, no matter how logical the argument is, is the work of Satan by the very fact that it makes you question a belief. It's a very interesting defense mechanism and the only way to get by it -- and believe me, I was raised Southern Baptist -- is to take massive amounts of mushrooms, sit in a field, and just go, "Show me."”

Next I'll be reading here how its impossible that there could be other intelligent life forms spread thoughout this universe... its complete falicy to state a human man was "created" in a 'gods' image. We evolved; its a very simple Fact (not theory). If a "god" was indeed witnessed by people then I suggest it was nothing more than a visiting life form, of some sort, from some where. One all-powerful deity supervising over uncountable universes, uncountable dimensions; yer, right.......

I'll tell you what I believe - we are NOT alone in this universe (nor this galaxy), we are NOT the most intelligent beings ever to "live" (define live; does a spirit 'live' in the afterlife - I would argue yes) in fact Id suggest our race is simply stupid, with the intelligence of a tree compared to what else is out there past out own atmospheric bubble...

I believe in the spirit realm, and that there are various levels one can move though to find solace, comfort and peace with ones self (ie, the MAN Jesus would be in the highest level achievable, and yes he was a Man albeit a very special man whom obviously had some very amazing gifts; gifts we could probably ALL do if we actually used 100% of our brain/body's capabilities. To say he was conceived "magically" is pretty funny - if Marys hymen was broken then its not that far fetched that she could have gotten pregnant from an excited 'fooling around' session, bit of a finger, bit of precome and there you have it). In fact I believe that once a spirit has reached a level of enlightenment (of ones self) they can decide to reincarnate and go through the cycle again.

I believe in pergatory, but you have the chance to eventually find enlightenment of ones self - people who have performed many evil acts over a lifetime (ie Hitler) would be in such a state of despair over his human actions that it would be vertually impossible for him to forgive himself to become enlightened, hence the term "hell" as he'll be in a state of pergatory for eons. A person who takes a life, such as murder or suicide, would be in pergatory but has the chance, over time (potentially eons), to better ones spirit-self and move up through the levels (dimensions, whatever you want to call it).

I find more solace reading the words of famous (and proved) mediums such as the american George Anderson than the bible could ever afford me. From what I can tell, we simply Never die. To suggest that someone like myself, who lives by the very simple creed "do to others as you would have them do to you", would suffer for all eternity for not having faith in an all-powerful diety, is disgusting, and nothing more than a way for one group of humanity to exert control over another. Its man-made, and has no place in MY world.

Will I be judged by "God" or "Devil" when I pass on? NO, I will be judged by my own spirit-self, as only I could ever know whether I lived a righteous life or one full of hatred and evil towards others.

Lets go a step further on the term "homosexuality"... The 'church' would consider this evil, and a sin, and you'd be straight to hell. Look at almost every animal that has ever existed and you'll find examples of homosexuality. Does that make that animal evil? HA! of course not. Does that animal have a soul, a spirit? Of course it does. Does that animal have the opportunity to exisit in the after-life? Yes. No, Im not bi/homosexual but I firmly believe in the motto I outlined previously. Treat everyone (animal & thing of existance, from grass to a tree to water to a rock) how you would expect to be treated and it'd be a truely amazing world.

I could go on but it wont influence another opinion, and the fact is I DOMT WANT TO influence anothers opinion. That would go against my motto. I'll say it again becasue its all anyone should need to hear - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Its very simple.

Sorry Damien you are correct I shouldn't of said always. What I was getting at though is you don't get athiest walking around telling others there going to hell unless they beleive in god.

An athiest is some1 who can generally take on others opinions as people who beleive in there religion will push there opinion/religion at you. (my opinion)

Ha. Never figured you for a bible thumper Andrew. You get far too drunk and have far too much fun for one. Alcohol and fun being the devils playthings and such.

Not baptised, educated exclusively in religious schools, orthodox parents, couldn't pay me to believe in an omnipotent, omnipresent all powerful space zombie named God that created the universe because he was bored one day and threatens me with eternal Hell fire when I die if I don't swear my life to him.

And don't even get me started on creation. Adam and Eve had Kane and Abel, one of them got knocked off by the other, and somehow the rest of humanity spawned from there... Righto.

Greek mythology makes more sense.

When I die, I'll become ashes or worm food. I won't become bonded to the devil for eternity to pay for my worldly sins, nor will I end up in heaven to play with God and some mighty gay looking angels if turn around and repent om my deathbed.

^^^ and he is dead right.

Funny (well ironic) thing in this whole debate, is that you all won't see the truth until it is way too late and you are burning in hell. It is all well and good for you not to have faith and think that when you die the lights go out and that is it. But for the rest of eternity you are going to regret your short sighted decision.

So you had better live life to the fullest while you are here. Your time here on earth is very short compared to the afterlife.

So I will throw the question askers a return question about the Bible, the foundation of Christian faith - if there is no God and it is all made up, can you then honestly maintain that the Bibile is all made up? Historically documented from various sources, with multiple people telling the same stories from different perspectives and persuasions, collated over centuries. Did someone just make up the whole thing and it suddenly became fact?

this explains it in a fairly one sided out look but its fairly compelling if u seen the original movie, take the 10 min to watch this, just skip the first coupla min bit boring

hey hey i never sniffed that tarzans grip pinch.gif

this explains it in a fairly one sided out look

LOL, that is putting it mildly. Yes I have seen the movie, and I have also seen other Michael Moore pieces of trash. To put them as 'failry one sided' is not fair to one sided men :P It is a load of shit.

for those that still care Dinosaurs are in the bible they just aren't called Dinosaurs as the word Dinosaur was only invented in 1800's, they were called behemoth's

anyway have a good read on this website

I think thats quite comforting, to know that there is a type of reference, cause I'd be worried if 2000 yrs ago someone didnt find a big ass skeleton and go wtf.... The argument makes sense. Now I'd love to show that page to the southern baptists in the USA and see what they say... I've always admired the catholic church for being able to rationalize logical science into the doctrine... Even tho I'm a heathen athiest I did go to catholic school and had to endure 5 years of theology which in a perverse way now I'm glad I did - gives you a sense of perspective

And hey, those with the faith might be right. Full credit for sticking to your guns. gotta admire that even if you don't agree with the logic.

-D

Damo is right - it is an argument that can't be won.

But regarding the earth's age - number one fact is that carbon dating has now been found to be completely unreliable. But more importantly; don't you think that a deity capable of creating the Earth and mankind can put fossils (and whatever the heck he likes) in the ground and make them seem any age? Maybe he did it to test people's faith. Maybe he did it so we would have a fuel source. There are millions of maybes.

Fact is that I believe in a higher power, and that those who don't will be summarily dealt with - either at their death or on judement day. If I were a non-believer I would hope that judgement day is not too far off!

And I understand that there are plenty of loonies that preach in the name of all sorts of deities (read: scientologists), and it is easy to discredit religion if that is your aim. Fact is, if you haven't been baptised (and I am guessing that most of you haven't been), then you are controlled by the devil anyhow. It is amazing what he makes people say, believe and do. Believe it or not, it makes no difference to me.

My belief: I live and will die a Christian, and will be going to heaven. Those who don't will live eternity in hellfire. Fullstop.

stay away from and and i'll stay away from you

religion is fine till they try to force there beliefs onto everybody then they can get f**ked but they can't help but not do that so there pretty much f**ked all the time

religion is the reason that stuff like Mortal Kombat 9 gets banned

I don't think I have forcedmy beliefs on anyone. I have merely stated what I believe, and left it at that.

Am I pressuring anyone to come to church with me? Read the bible with me? Change their ways due to my beliefs? No.

People can (and will) do whatever the heck they want. I was just pointing out what I believe will happen to you when you die. If that makes you uncomfortable, the that is not my problem, and maybe you should think about the fact that the world is going to hell (pardon the pun) and that is strongly correlating with the decrease of participation in organised reliigion. Something to think about. (Obviously I am not talking about the rise of middle-eastern religious extremists, who obviously are all going to hell no matter what).
