Im about to weld my diff on my r33 and just been reading people mentioning to make sure the half shafts line up before welding or else you might have a hard time putting them in once welded. I dont quite understand exactly what is meant by this and why would welding the centre make the half shafts not alligned?

This happened to a guy a trade school a few years ago in his 34.

He welded it and due to the heat warping/moving everything he had trouble getting the stub axles back in.

Why weld it when you can just re shim it, guy at work did it to his 33 and its basically a locked diff when over shimmed.

Yeah I just tacked it with the axles in then took them out and welded the rest. The reason why is, one with welding you know that its going to be locked 100 percent and dont have to guess with how much shims to use, shims eventually wear out and thirdly its cheaper and dont have to wait 3 weeks for shims to arrive from japan.
