A recent post to steve I did.

You don't have to take the motor out it just makes it easier to do everything 100%. I gather you have all the tools!

Make sure you soak all heat shield and exhaust bolts with rust off or WB40 lot's before you start and let it sit.

To do it while the motor is in you need to:

*Undo exhaust from the Dump

*Undo Tailshaft from the gearbox

*Remove under tray's

*Remove airbox and suction pipe

*Remove Gearbox cross member watching you don't stretch the Attessa line. You will need to move the Gearbox up down and around to get all the bolts

*Remove heat shield's....try to use an impact 10mm rather than a conventional socket

*Remove dump and O2 sensor

*Remove lower suction pipe.

Right if your this far this is where it starts to become a bitch of a job so have a beer and be thankful the easy stuff is over.

*Work on getting pipes ect off the turbo. You can remove the actuator as well as it will help the turbo to drop through eventually.

*Remove all for bolts of the turbo from the exhaust flange....the turbo should come out now.

Have a least 2 more beer's because you should have had the shit's and the relief of holding the turbo in you hand is worth at least 2-3 beer's and a quick look at some girly pick's!!!

Now it really starts to get hard....the best thing about this is if you have to take the turbo out again the below step's will already be done.

Things to watch for when putting it back in.

* I don't know what turbo you are doing but I presuming a Sierra Stage 1. With this you will need to do a little pipe bending buy hand.....this is the part that usually takes me the longest and is a bitch to do in the car....be gentle.

* OK....this is what I do and other people have different idea's.....both Andy and I have this done with no issue's. There is a banjo bolt at the front of the motor going to the turbo....this should in my opinion be removed and drilled out....I cannot remember if it is a 1mm hole but if it is you need to go to a least 3mm! Like I said ask around on this....more to the point ask your turbo builder if he agree's to add more oil flow to the turbo.

Yes...If you were to stick your hands down the side of his motor when hot you would probably have to call a paramedic to sooth the burns!...or am I wrong?

Not wrong, definitely paramedic treatment would be required.

i pretty much agree with this except for highlighted, but maybe if it makes you feel abit safer, turbo's been out 3 times now and hadnt once removed it.. no problems.

as for the banjo, its i think .8mm and is likely to get blocked, which is what i believe the cause of blowing the turbo..

mines drilled out to 2.5mm -3mm.. which is ideal..

to add to the WD40 part, it helps alot. also another trick is to allow everything to be cold, as in do it in the morning when the car hasnt been driven later than the previous night..

helps when undoing bolts and not snapping them!

also reccomend changing the studs anyway.. they are 10 years old.. as old as craigs girlfriend cam

And is too unbolt or undo it from the gearbox to remove it is it?.....didn't see a mention of unbolting it from the diff or center uni joint mount nummers!...LMFAO!.....without that done it's not removed is it?

I do and will for new high flowed turbo's....because unlike you I have access to a hoist!

...that way I also don't have to worry about calling a paramedic when the car falls on me because i have a hoist no stands!

whats the claim to fame...... a turbo change in 2 hours if I had no heat shields, all the piping already in the right place and bolts that been removed recently because of shit turbo builds(a couple of times)....to be quite honest I find 2 hours quite average for the turbo replacement on a car thats already had most of the work done!.......did you have and nummers have a lunch break in there somewhere!

Hey guys,

So I'm also going to be replacing the LHS cam cover seal at the same time as doing the turbo removal/rebuild.

I've heard the rear of the seal is quite hard to seat properly when replacing the cam cover, but couldn't find it again when searching. Can't imagine anything other than being careful and making sure it stays in position - any hints?

Alternatively - and I don't really want to do this, but - if anyone wants to buy the car as-is and replace the turbo themselves then I'm also open to offers there. Only reason is this is the main family car and I can't afford parts to take so long while waiting for repairs. The better half can only drive autos and having an 8 month old daughter really adds to the urgency. That and I'm finding it difficult to get the time in to do the work myself.

So if you can help with the cam seal replacement or are interested in the car just let me know
