Hi all,

Before the standard "Use the search function" response will be used - I have searched and there is very little regarding this issue using a OEM routed swaybar.

This topic is regarding installing an RB30DET into a R32 GTST.

Currently, my sump (High Energy style) is clashing with my sway bar. My engine mounts have been modified as per the PDF (potentially slightly lower engine position) but this has led to the sump hitting the Whiteline sway bar (SK group buy spec).

My question is what have people done to get around this issue?

On initial glance, my solution would be to space the sway bar down at the chassis mounts. Use a longer bolt and washer. The only issue I can see is that the link pins/drop links will no longer be long enough. However, this is easily overcome by either modifying the standard links or purchasing aftermarket ones.

The only practical downside I can see from that is the sway bar may end up lower than the cross member which in the vent of bottoming the car out, the sway bar will scrape/bend. So long as the link pins are actuating the sway bar perpendicular to the lever arm on the sway bar, kinematically I see no change.

Any other ideas/options?

All input appreciated.

Cheers,

David

Whiteline sell an S-link kit for the sway bar which would give you some adjustment i believe.

Thing is, I dont think the amount you will need to space it will alter much at all. A 10mm drop would do SFA to the spherical ball joints on the links.

Just how far out is it do you think?

Well realistically speaking, the engine mounts have been modified as per the RB30DET PDF, so in saying that it should be clashing at a MAXIMUM of about 10-15mm.

Car is at my engine builders as he is installing it, so dont have the car on hand to measure/take pictures.

Just wondering if there are any other ideas other than the above mentioned fixes?

Heat up the sump and modify it with a hammer (does it have gates and baffles inside? Modify them first).

This has got to be the dumbest idea I have ever heard...

Mate this is not a personal attack, and I generally respect your posts as a whole... But this is WRONG.

DO NOT play games with the motors life blood, RB's are plaigued with oil problems as it is. Why create another?

Your criticism is welcome! I actually meant it quite literally at the time - easy fix to modify tin sump to accommodate a few mm but I guess it needed a little more thought...

I had the same problem in my cefiro.

It just slightly touches.

those whiteline S/ 8 looking links are rubbish, imho.

My car is street/ drift and like all of my cars, usually set up with soft susp and big sway bars.

I thought I'd try a heavier setup with no front swaybar for a change,

If its rubbish, custom swaybar is the go.

I tried spacing the stocker down, but wasnt happy with the results I got.

If it was a stock sump I would just notch / ive the sump a small releif.

Yeh...problem is that I dont want to have to get another sway-bar since I have already paid for this upgraded one. Sure I could sell it, but its just another hassle I don't want to have to deal with.

I think spacing the sway bar down will be the way to go. If necessary I will get those whiteline S Links. My standard links need replacing anyway.

If I still have problems, guess the way forward will be to modify the sump, or get a new swaybar...neither of which I will like doing.

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally dropped the 30 back in the car last night and with the engine mounts bolted with stock holes there is about 10mm clearance between the swaybar and ASR sump, will throw a couple of shitty pics up later.

    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
    • 100% accurate!ย  We are a pack of know it alls....ย  But, I bet people go to you when they have a problem! I've been on a bit of a clean up rampage too over the past month!ย  I've thrown more shit in the bin over the past 2 weeks than I have in the past 3 years combined! Anyway, it's all good fun being different! My wife sometimes does not agree! ย
    • ADHD in all form isn't about "can focus, or can't focus" or is hyper active or isn't etc. ย  It's all a dysregulation. Either time feels to be stationary, or time just vanishes in a split second. We are either under focussed on the task at hand (as we're over focussed on our surroundings) or we have no idea an atomic bomb went off beside us as we're so hyper focussed and locked in on things. ย  Not to mention the rapid fire thought process. What it takes a "normal" process to think up a solution to a problem, ADHD will be able to give you 5 different ways to solve the problem, and the pros and cons of each. While we can be highly impulsive and lack the ability to "control ourselves" we can also become paralysed with the inability to make a decision for ourselves. While most of us have an OCD like requirement for perfection, we lack the ability often to remain focussed to get things to a perfect state. Those with undiagnosed ADHD as adults, can often find the last part actually stops them ever attempting to do things that they have the ability to do, as the reasoning is often "if I can't do it perfectly, it's not worth doing" ย  As for projects... Ha ha ha, I still need to take the other half of my wall trim down in the Fiance's office so I can paint it. Need to finish digging and running the back yard drains, my R33, getting the Ninja bike registered (now being sold), the moped project, fixing either of the lawn mowers so they're reliable, along with a myriad of other things. ย  It's why I've been going through lately and just being brutal and clearing projects off that I won't actually ever complete. IE, moped will go to the tip, or be given away, bike is being sold, Subaru project being sold, some parts for other projects given away. Or I've been making myself focus on one thing at a time, by ticking off the smallest quickest ones first. ย  There's also a reason by our mid twenties we seem to be "know it alls", as we've all been down some of the weirdest and oddest rabbit holes when you follow the dopamine trail. It's often also why we're more a jack of all trades, but not a master of one. ย  However, pretty much all of my hobby projects, in one way or another, all come back around to automotive. That's my zen area.
    • Remember reading about this not too long ago. been for sale for a long timeย  this is like when the wife says you need to sell the car so you put it up for a ridiculous price no one will pay
    • You are perhaps suggesting that it is not a super car? Well....it's not an AU.
