i have to disgree there about doing it first. if you do it first then you really need to get it retuned after each mod. best off starting with the exhaust, cooler and airfilter. then up the boost and then after that get an ecu.

I'm of the belief that without retuning for mods that have a big impact on the engines performance your pissing in the wind a bit.

You're right though, there are alot of people getting around just on the standard ecu, not optimal, but not catastrophic.

Pissing in the wind in regards to it not being worth it, or it being detrimental to the engine? I don't mind it running like a heap for a while as I gather everything to put it together, and then whack the ECU in and get it tuned in one go. If it's

"just not worth it" in the beginning, but it all comes together in the end I won't mind. It will save me spending $600 at a tuner about 8 times before it was done.

well put it this way, intercooler, exhaust, boost controller and air filter can all be had for similar money to what just an ecu and tune will (if you don't bother about wank factor and just get a cheaper exhaust, since they will still flow pretty much just as good, or if you go for a more expensive ecu), but will give you a similar, if not bigger, gain in power. generally, ecu will gain you about 10 to 20kw. exhaust, air filter, raising the boost and an intercooler will get you 30 to 40kw.

How much can I do the first lot of mods for before I get an ECU if I was trying to keep costs to a minimum WITHOUT sacrificing quality and performance, I know I can search for this, but finding the cheapest and knowing if it will perform well without asking would be taking a gamble? I don't mind generic stuff, as long as it's of a decent quality.

I'm not big on the wank factor RE the brand loyalty and exhaust, if it performs well I'm interested. Thanks for the reply, Mad. I didn't see it until now.

I'm so stoked, I go in for an informal interview (I say informal because it's in the bag) I'm happy :D It's going to suck if I get the car and trailer it around for the 6 months to work shops, but it will be worth it in the end, haha.

Hey man, in my experience, if you just want a nice daily with good power and reliability then (in order):

-full service regardless of what the odo says, including all fluids, plugs, timing belt etc

-buy full 3inch turbo back exhaust with cat

-lightweight intercooler but dont go too big and buy one that retains stock position with no holes cut

-buy ECU and boost control and have them installed and tuned at once

these mods will be the best for street use in my opinion - regards to the intercooler, weight aint good at the front end and response is hindered by large core and pipes

How much power could I reliably make like this? I understand not going too large with the intercooler, I want it to be as responsive as possible, not doughy. Also, could this be done for under 2.5k?

Thanks for the advice, btw :)<br>

Second hand exhaust - 600

Second hand fmic kit - 300

New hd clutch - 500

Second hand sway bars 300

Second hand coilovers 700

Turbotech boost tee - 50

That's under 2.5 k for a car that will move and handle better with around 170rwkw

Add a mistune ecu and tune later for 800 and you are at 190 odd rwkw

Add a second hand gcg highflow later on again and you will have 230rwkw

Add injectors, z32 afm and fuel pump an you will have 260rwkw
