I have just bought a 1990 R32 GTR and have had it for two weeks now but only got to drive it for one.

The problem occured when i was driving along at 100 in 5th and the car fuel surged. It was just after i had filled the car up with fuel so initially thought it could have been bad fuel.

I gave it a bit of a strapping to see if i could get it to surge again but no such luck. The car was boosting up fine but seemed to be lacking abit of power.

I pulled up at an intersection and the car died on me. I started it up and it was flooding up and running rough. It wouldn't rev over 3,000 and was detonating popping flames out the exhaust. I babied it home and got to work the next day trying to find a problem.

The car starts and idles fine for the 1st 10 to 20 sec then starts to run abit rough then you give it a few revs and it sounds like its hitting a governer at around 3,000 and runs extremely rough at idle.

I replaced the spark plugs as they were foweled real bad. Problem still occured.

I figured i should start with the basics as it was running so rich and flooding the car up so much it may have been a fuel pressure problem. I grapped a set of pliers and held the car at about 1,500 where it was running really bad and applied pressure with the pliers to the fuel hose feeding the motor. Bingo car instantly ran better and i could now rev it to 5.000 before i couldn't regulate the fuel enough.

I replaced the fuel reg and still problem occurs. Replaced the Map sensor and still no help. Unplugged the AFM individually and they work like they should. I have had the scan tool on it from work and its showing no codes but indicates that the fuel mixture is rich which i already know by how much black smoke the car is pumping out. The others mechanics at work have as much idea about the car as me. I have checked the 3 main causes that contribute to this kind of problem but am lost on what to do next.

If anyone has encounted a problem like this or might know why the car is getting so much fuel please help.

One last thing the car is completely standard.

generally a failing fuel pump should make it lean out, not run rich. and besides, all the fuel pump does is supply the fuel, the fuel pressure reg and injectors are what controls how much fuel makes it into the clyinders. my guess is that there is an issue with an injector or possibly even the fuel return line to the tank. i also wouldn't rule out the AFM just yet. it may be worth plugging in the scan tool when it is playing up and seeing what the voltage reading is. if it is drastically different between the 2 then one has an issue.

it may also be that you have an intake leak somewhere, since that will cause the car to run rich.

No Issues with the fuel return checked that already. When the scan tool was plugged in there was no real difference with voltage for the AFM's. Am looking for an air leak but no luck as yet. Might chuck in some air flow meters just to be on the safe side but doesn't sound like there going to be the problem.

Of all the things to go wrong. Blown off cooler pipe in front of LH wheel arch. Causing the AFM's to give a wrong signal. I dummied up an intake from the turbo's to the plennum cancelling out the cooler and car ran fine. Off with the front bar and fixed the problem. Glad its back and running fine.

    • Read the ECU for fault codes or have someone else do it. A faulty coolant temperature sender is usually listed in ECUs. If the sensor itself is not busted it can also be a bad ground connection. Or in a really unlucky case, damaged wiring.
    • Can't be a Futjitsubo as those are made with a flex piece and Reimax is smaller in pipe diameter. If anything it is closest to a Mines pipe, but evidently it is not an actual Mines pipe.   Classic word humor
    • Alright I will try to not forget.   As GTSboy replied to you already, problem is mainly the mismatch between the actual exhaust part and the denomination in the papers. That basically just looks like tampering to a cop, if they were to check your car and notice. If it had been done right they would have clarified it to be a custom pipe and just given it a certain part number that you have to engrave or weld onto the pipe. I will definitely inquire on what to do. Changing the pipe wouldn't be my favorite solution as it costs a bunch of money and the cat was fitted with the front pipe and exhaust under the car, and if the front pipe flange does not sit in the OEM location the cat will need to be refit for any other pipe to work. It also usually doesn't need a brand name or something like that, but more something like a part number. Usually for exhaust parts, on silencers and cat units specifically, there is a badge that reads the certificate number that belongs to these exhaust parts under EU regulation. You get these numbers after you put a part or group of parts through the tedious testing according to EU vehicle legislation and they pass. You can find these "part numbers" on various parts throughout a EU vehicle. On windows, headlights, engine parts, seat belts and so on. All these parts have gone through standardized testing and acquired a so called ECE or EG Certificate that makes them legal to use by themselves in all countries that adhere to these standards. You can also not alter these parts in any way, if you do they become illegal. An example for stampings on an exterior lighting part, the people who need to know can find the documentation for this unit in a database. I do not know what all the standards and so on mean.
    • If that was the case I suppose you could call it "Mein's" brand....  ... I'll see myself out... 😅
