Indeed I am. And I am shortly going to make a trip to QLD to look at both TQ's and gaints cars should they still be available. And I will weighing up the options against importing a race only / Rally Reg one from Japan (which go for around 4.5M yen now).

But none of that changes the fact that if you were looking at buying one of those ex Targa ones - and depending on where you live - if you get pulled over by some unfriendly's then some things that they might jump up and down about are going to be DAMN hard to fix.

It's easy to swap and exhaust back to stock if you get in trouble for it being to loud. But it's not so easy to retro-fit the standard seat belts back into a car that now has a massive weld in cage through the B Pillar where the seat belts used to go! It's stupid because we all know a 6 point harness is going to do a better job at stopping you than a standard 3 point seat-belt but it doesn't change the fact that the law doesn't care. Then there is the airbags, the rear seats (lack of - but you will still get grief for blocking access to them with the cage) etc etc.

Those of us with steet reg'd Targa cars run the gauntlet ever time we drive them - but we all know the consequences. But then for us getting Rally reg if it comes to it is no big deal given really the only time we drive these cars is to, from and at racing events. It's why the guy who has purchased my old R34 has gone straight to Rally reg even though my car did still have street rego - just to avoid this potential drama.

Thats why I went sick on my 9 second Drag R33 GTR and turned it into a circuit car for private track days,

and will leave my R35 in street tune (interior wise anyway!) so I cant get in to grief if I do find myself on the side

of the road with an admirer.

Funny thing is these days I can get over 500 kw at wheels out of the R35 while it still looks stock and the

R33 is a fire breathing monster at that power level.

My old R33 "street GTR" was runing 450 awkw and used to rock at the traffic lights like it was on something.

I remember a few years ago pulling up at the lights next to a cop bike and he just pulled up his helmet and

shook his head at me.... respect!

I wish I could get my R35 to cam over like that at the lights.

Get bigger cams... Lol.

yeah but you do realize if you buy one of those Targa cars as a road car and get pulled over you are pretty stuffed.

Could you elaborate on exactly what kind of issues i may run into with the authorities?

I completely understand how u feel Munro.

Sometimes i feel like i should invest in a blown out r34 GTR with something like a T51R on a 2.8 stroker ect and have a Toyota Prius as a daily LOL.

Its just something about a lumpy rb that sends shivers down my spine =]

Hi guys, i'm in the Market for a new car and have been looking into the new HSV GTS E3 range with a walkinshaw package. However the price is tipping into the JDM r35 price range.

The two cars have nothing in common, as I am sure you have worked out by now.

Last issue Wheels or whatever it was had one of these 400rwkw blown HSV 0-400m: 13 seconds (around standard HSV times) and GTR 0-400m in 11.2 or something. They would feel - very - different. The GTR would feel like a missile in comparison. Those supercharged HSVs are normally very slow and noisy to drive.

Just can't get them to launch with any sort of vigor it seems :miner:

Would anyone be able to confirm some rumors ive been reading about the r35s "Launch Control" issues that were floating around?

Ive done some research and watched the video on youtube where GT Channel interviews one of the cheif engineers about the launch control issue. and these are the details ive found. Any help much appreciated.

  • With VDC on, Nissan claim a 3.5sec 0-100 time
  • Online rumors claim a 3.3sec 0-100 time can be achieved with VDC off
  • Nissan explain that VDC off is only to be used to get the vehicle out of mud/snow
  • Nissan explained that with VDC on, it can still do the same 0-100times as with VDC off
  • Launching the car with VDC off can damage the gearbox and void warrenty due to high temperatures.
  • Online rumors claim that launches with VDC off does not invalidate warranty unless crashed during VDC being switched off (which can be confirmed by data logging)

It also seems that there is a large topic about the "Launch Control" versions Nissan currently have employed.

  • The R35 originally came with LC1, which allowed the car to stall to 4000rpm with VDC off
  • After a number of gearboxes failing with LC1, Nissan developed LC2 which dropped the RPM from 4000 to 3000. No limit was opposed on the amount of launches at this point and this form of launch control did not need VDC to be off.
  • Rumours claim that Nissan is in the works about developing a LC4 where the ECU will only allow up to 4 launches in a row depending on gearbox temperatures. The advantage of this is that you dont have to worry about voiding the warrenty as the ECU will only allow x amount of safe launches.

Finally, how does all this affect me if i am purchasing a 08/09 JDM GTR? would it be possible to send the car back to Nissan Japan to get a ECU reflash with the new launch controls?

Thanks again for any help.

A couple of key points to note I guess.

Firstly - there were only handful of JDM cars imported to Oz and they were all here before Nissan Oz released their first car. Once Nissan delivered the first one here (to some lucky bloke) there were no more JDM cars legally allowed to be registered.

Consequently ALL of the JDM cars registered in Oz were Series 1 cars that had the LC1 software (so they will all be 08's). However - all of the Oz delivered cars have been at minimum Series 2 with the LC2 software (they are up to Series 4 now with the 2011 DBAR35's). The Series 3 cars are different to the Series 2 mostly in the MFD (has GPS etc which the first Oz delivered cars didn't have).

As for how you'd best go about upgrading a S1 JDM car to a newer version of the LC software I have no idea. The Cobb's these days have a TCM module available to let you change the launch RPM to what ever you like so it's really a moot point other than I'm pretty sure VDC MUST be off for LC to activate in the S1 cars - so there might be some added risk to the boxes.

 maybe quinn will give me a commission?! or maybe you will for saving you dough!? haha, it certainly is keenly priced. hope you get it mate. it's ADM for the price of a race only JDM. not to mention it being a targa winning car this year. should still be pretty fresh. I can't think of a better car for $95K.

Well i just heard back from the owner. Was sold about 2weeks ago =[

the search continues =[

    • Just checked in first post and you should be able to bring it home November this year, right? I'm amazed you made it through four years of this. As hard as it feels now the rest will go by in a breeze in hindsight, I'm sure.
    • Realized I haven't been back here in a while. Still here, still alive, still waiting for the car.  I went back again the only time last year from Oct-Nov for R's Meeting and drove it around some more, including a few laps on Fuji Speedway(in the wet, sadly). The car still feels good, but have a couple small things to address. I've been getting more parts but have slowed down still, and most of the bigger purchases are now out of the way. I find myself getting impatient more and more when it comes to getting started on this project; it's quite hard for me not being able to really dive in and start making this car my own because it's halfway across the world. At times it doesn't even really feel like I own one of these. Haven't really been motivated or had the desire to document the last trip on here or social media for, well, reasons... but here's some pics...it's also still alive and well as you can see: I've narrowed down to the last large part purchases(anything over $2k) before the engine build to be: 1) Ohlins Road & Tracks 2) ATS Twin Carbon clutch 3) Endless BBK with some custom options and 4) Kansai Service carbon driveshaft I don't think the budget exists for all of these this year, but I'll try for one or two items I think. Though, every time I look at my spreadsheet I sigh, shake my head, and get depressed just that little bit more.  'til later.
    • It's a stunning location!  I've been to NZ twice but haven't made it to the North Island yet.  Definitely on the cards but the South Island is hard to tear yourself away from too... Looking forward to see what you can wring out of it once you can get it to hold together!  Be awesome to get a low 11 or even sneaking into the high 10's pass out of it.  That's a bloody quick car that most people will never experience in their life.  Enjoy!
    • Nominally yes but I’m not really at that stage yet. Outsourcing to Japan is also a relatively good deal at the moment because their currency has devalued much more against the USD.  You would assume this but a lot has changed from the pandemic. Mechanics are in short supply and demand for fixing old cars has gone up from the cost of new cars. 250-300 USD/hr is not an unusual shop labor rate in California and you’re paying that regardless of whether the guy is competent or not. Coworkers have been quoted 3000 USD for a water pump and thermostat at a dealer on an N54. Oil changes went from ~75 USD to 150 on fairly normal cars like Civics. The cost of the oil and filter hasn’t even kept up with inflation.
    • The downside to that is that the cost of everything, particularly labour, is significantly higher here than it is over there in the Disunited States of Slavery. You can hire 3 tradesmen over there for just the Ranger Raptor allowance of a single 3rd year apprentice over here.
