Hi folks... Thought i'd post here in an attempt to sort out some running issues I have since doing an RB30e conversion my Patrol.

First up, it's running rich. Not just a little, i've had cars run rich before, this is insanely rich. I am getting an error code for AFM and thought "sweet we've found the problem" however we put my AFM on my mates car and it worked fine, no issues. Swapped his o2 sensor for mine which didnt change anything either. Then put his stuff on mine and had same problem.

Secondly, It's running really rough at idle and if i try and take off normally it coughs and splutters and backfires until I get to a little above 2000rpm then it just takes off. I am very happy with how it moves my 2 ton Patrol once it hits this rpm mark. But yeah below this and its just got no power at all. To try and rememedy this fault i've replaced the CAS with mates good one, cleaned out the AAC valve, replaced spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor with brand new items and played around with the timing (15-20degrees) All to no avail.

Now, bedsides trying this brand new AFM I really dont know what else to try. Thinking I might hafta try a more qualified mechanic but not sure what else they could do that I havent already tried.

Just to clarify, this engine I removed from a skyline I bought and drove home 1 hours drive and it didn't miss a beat, no issues whatsoever. There is one thing I thought of this morning but not sure if it is possible but, when I wired up the alternator I was stupid (or just tired, working late nights on this car after 10 hour days at work) and didn't disconnect the battery. The main power wire earthed itself out on my chassis. Could this have possibly fried ther ECU? The only error codes it is showing is AFM, speed sensor, nuetral starter switch and air con. All a non issue except AFM i guess. I have searcched for all vaccuum leaks, all electrical plugs are plugged in and yeah still trying to think of stuff to sort it out.

Anyway, all ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated.

there is a chance that the neutral switch is partly causing the issue, mainly because the ecu has a different map for neutral compared to when it's in gear. the difference would be minimal i would've thought, but it may be part of the cause of the issue you are seeing. same goes for the speed sensor. it can cause the ecu to run different settings.

it may also be an issue with the wiring to the AFM that is causing the issue, not the AFM itself. maybe check the AFM plug and the ecu harness plug to make sure all the wires are in there properly. i have also read on the pulsar forums where people have had issues with the AFM and found a bit of a solution to be to run a second earth to the AFM.

And Mad082, thanks. I will hafta check with a mate who's done this conversion before and see if he had probs with the neutral starter switch and speed sensor. For now I have picked up a brand new AFM (an after market one) and another ecu, plus a multi meter to check everything over. Once everythings sorted with this I will be turboing the beast so yeah wanna sort it quickly :)

Lol, no one cares about rb30e's on this forum.

how can you speak on behalf of the entire forum with less than 6 months on here and 100 posts?

fuck off back to boostcruising, cunt

I was going to try and say something along the lines of the rb30e being a good upgrade for the patrol carby version, and about it being a solid, cheap and reliable motor.

But hey, your words in this case are a much more fitting response. thumbsup.gif

Hahahaha thanks guys :) And yes, even though it's not running right it creams the old carby motor. Actually accelerates up hills now instead of dying in the arse. It actually feels like a turbo compared to the old one, can only imagine what it's gonna be like when I do turbo it.

Lol- my parents had a gq rb30 carby patrol on lpg back in the day, Literally had trucks overtake us up hills on the freeway on the way to sydney. The things are built like tanks, a lpg rb30 just did not cut it power wise. Good luck with getting it sorted mate, wish i could be of some help to your problem. Let us know how you go. And will require pics once its turbo!! thumbsup.gif

Hey buddy, I am really tired so I didnt read the entire of youre post or the replies so far but it seem as if you have gone through and checked most of the extremely common engine problems that cause the issues you are having. I would also advise you to unplug your temp sensor and clean it (mine had gunk on the contacts and made it idle like shit). '

Join the R31 skyline forums, they have more info/ gurus on RB30's then on SAU, I am sure someone knows what else could be the problem
