I unbolted the starter motor switch assembly (solonoid) in order to gain access to the bell housing bolts but when I did a spring a cylinder popped out of it, now my question is does the spring go under the cylinder or on top of the cylinder?

I remOved the two screws that hold the solonoid and also the starter motor. But inside the solOnoid theres a cylinder with a spring from my understanding the spring goes on the top Of the cylinder so as it can push the cylinder back?

I have attached a pic which is what im talking about.

Whichever way will spring the cylinder so that the drive gear is disengaged. Solenoid will compress the spring when energized and overcome it to push the gear into drive with the ring gear

Thanks that what i thought.
