Hey guys, having a few issues with a new head im putting together.

I currently have 2 heads, 1 off my car which afaik is an original 89 GTS-t M-spec RB20DET (call this head A), which is warped and buggered, another which is off an unknown R32 RB20 (meant to be original R32 engine) which im planning on putting on mine (head B).

the issue is, the lifters out of head A are different to the lifters out of head B, the internal design is slightly different, and the oil pickup line is at a different height. i got an extra few lifters (2 were seized in when i tried to bleed them) from another 2 rb20's and one engine again had one design, the other engine the other design. so all up i have lifters from 4 engines, 2x with one design, 2x with another.

now i'd just put lifters from head B into head B, but not knowing they were different, i already bled the lifters from head A, and reassembled head B with them in there.

so what im getting at, is what does the different design mean? later model design change? does it matter which ones go in?

i called nissan, and they said there is only one type of lifter they supply for the RB20, which makes me think they are universal, even so i want a definite on this before i put the head back on.

thanks guys

additional points:

external dimensions are the same (besides oil line)

both seem to feel similar when pressed

when fitted and assembled, it seems to be pushing the valves open and closed fine.

its possible that the earlier model RB20 (cefiro type) has different designed lifters then that of an R32.

it all sounds like they wuill work fine in your application tho. as long as they are bled up and arent seized

how different is the oil line? is it still gonna sit within the feed hole from the head, as in its not so different that the lifter groove will sit miles above or below the feed hole and therefore receive no/little pressure?

yeh kinda, both will move through the opening for oil at some stage, however it looks like the ones out of head A are sitting in the opening at rest, and probably all the way through their movement, whereas the ones from head B look like they are on the border of the opening at rest, about half of the ring in, but this is from rough measurements. either way both head castings look the same, or close enough, so ive taken the risk and left the head A lifters in.

i should however note, with no pressure on the lifters (freshly bled) the head B lifters have more movement than the head A lifters, but both sit at the same height at rest.

Thread necro.

I have the same situation. I went to clean my lifters and found a bit of a surprise. One set came out of an RB20DET and one set came out of an RB20DE. As you can see they are 2 completely different lifters. The internal depth on one is very different to the other (10mm compared to 7mm) and they are just very different overall. Like stewy said, Nissan FAST says that both engines should use the same lifters, which have P/N# 13231-79S00

Has anyone else ever come across this before? Seems kind of weird and the OP never replaied so not sure what ever happened.

Pics attatched below, lifter on right is RB20DET and left is RB20DE

    • Absolutely this. Yes, except not vacuum hose. Something oil/fuel safe is a better idea.
    • Like a Stagea, but not as cool! Hope you have enough garage space for this, or is something going to leave to make way for it?
    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage.
    • Do you have a picture? I assume it is a breather for gearbox oil as it expands, it should have a vacuum line run nice and high in the engine bay (R32 GTR has it on a top bellhousing bolt)
    • Hi all, I am putting an r33 gtst gearbox into a VL and have noticed what looks like a vacuum barb on the box (on top in the middle). Suspecting that it's a vacuum line but I'd like to double check, if someone could confirm the function of that would be great. Cheers in advance.
