Guyz i need help and advice...

I bought the v35 a on Friday and its been smoking ever since as i mentioned in the v series forum http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/368987-white-puff-of-smoke-help/

I decided to check the oil and it looked low on one side and high on the other side of the dipstick. its confusing. But i noticed some sludge on the dipstick and decided to open up the oil cap and look inside and its bad. Its like the stuff is covered in sludge.

What do i do? i already signed the contract for the car. can i take it back and ask them to fix it or do something about it? or they wont?

i bought it from Lynford motors in Osbourne Park http://wa.ahg.com.au/Lynford/

Please help me out. need some advice.

Cheers.

Vish.

PS: I also have the premium warranty with it.

They serviced it recently. about 2 weeks ago according to the sales guy. But aren't they supposed to give the car in good condition? They state that they do a full inspection

including :

Oil Level and Condition

Engine Condition

Performance

Compression

Spark Plugs

Ignition leads

Distributor Cap

Radiator

Radiator Cap

Cooling System

Cooling Hoses

Coolant Level and Condition

Fan Belts

Oil Leaks

Engine Mounts

Fuel System

In-Line Fuel Filter

Air Filter

Emission Control

Exhaust System

Then why would they sell a car that doesn't pass the test?

cos they dont really care by the sounds of it,give them a call during business hours, explain to them your not happy and see what the response is.

The sludge is blackish and brownish. just like old oil.

The car runs really good. no probs. idles steady. only the smoke and the sludge.

Is there any way of getting rid of the sludge? is there some machine they can connect the engine to and flush out all the crap? is oil sludge in cars common?

I am gonna call them tomorrow and see what they say. What if they just clean it and give me back the car? can it have caused any damage already?

Did you test drive the car? surly you would have noticed this when it was in the yard if you test drove it, this is anohter reason to buy private, dealers tend to not give a shit about people and sell what every they can where ever they can, there are some honest dealers out there but GL trying to find em.

Hey mate, yeah i took it for a test drive. the car is very smooth and and has nice pick up. its just the smoke and sludge. I asked them about the smoke and it was white so they thought it was coz it was cold.

I took it today and they were all surprised how it passed their 100 Point check with the smoke and sludge. At the moment they have kept the car to find out whats wrong and have given me a daewoo to drive around for free... They said they will call me after its fixed to pick up. Hope they fix it props and its not a big issue.

is there any way of getting rid of sludge? like after they clean it or whatever. i also take it somewhere for a second clean? Anyone know a such a place?

Hey mate, asked my dad cause hes in the motor trade..

he says take photos of it, and take the car back to them and tell them they need to change oil and oil filters ASAP if it hasnt been done.

Sludge probably caused by lack of oil changes and possible over heating..and sludge is hard to get rid of.

You need to lodge your concerns with the dealership and give them to opportunity to rectify the problem otherwise you can report this to the MTA

and they will take it further one your behalf.

You also must request they do a cyclinder leak test and compression test and make sure no further damage!

and number one rule dont trust a sales man :P

hope that helps

what they will do is they will put a engine flush through it which should break down the sludge then they will do anotyher oil change if still sludgy they will do it again and again til its sorted

and the comment on dont trust a salesman is just stereiotypical im always as honest as i can be due to i dont like being told crap either so i treat others how i want to be treated

Thanks for the advice W1ink. will ask them to do a compression and leak done test. I have left the car there. they havent called back to tell me how its going. Maybe i will call them and ask them to do the test too.

Joel. the sludge cant damage the engine? like if it gets stuck somewhere? don't know much bout engines.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the car back today.

They told me it was the PCV valve, it was blocked and they cleaned it and put new oil in it.

They also mentioned that since the PCV valve was blocked it caused oil to get into the chamber. I dont understand any of it. They had to change the spark plugs as it was covered in oil.

When i went to pick it up. i started the car and noticed it was still smoking so i went and called them. the smoke looked less but it was still looking abnormal. They sed it was steam as it was dissappearing quickly. and it will go away by the time i get home. And if it continues i shud take it back.

Now after drivin for an hour, and also driving from osbourne park to cannington. the smoke is still there. it looks bluish. and its bad at the traffic lights.

i am now getting pissed. it feels like they did nothing. They mentioned that they had to send the car to Japanese Performance Centre and they sorted it out. Not sure what the issue is now. I have only had the car for 3 days now since i bought it, and they made me wait for nearly 2 weeks to fix it and still didnt end up fixing it.

Any suggestions or tips?

if it is blue smoke out the back than that is definately burning oil...

needed to change the spark plugs due to oil on them is a bit odd... that means there is oil on the pistons which would suggest maybe rings are bad, which would also mean blue smoke out the back...

it could be burning off old risidual oil but i would think that would be gone pretty quick...

i see 2 options here, first is kick up a stink about being sold a lemon and demand your money back, (if that exists in this state) or if you have a warrenty drive it so much that the oil runs out and destroys the engine so they have to replace it, fact is you have taken it back for the problem to be sorted and they haven't by the sounds....

Also if they say they took it else where to be fixed ask to see the reciept so they are not just passing blame.

also maybe contact jpc and ask them what they thought. Be up front with them and they should tell you the go.

Another option is to get a compression and leak down check done by another workshop and if the results are not good take them to the place and tell them its a dud, get your money back or a new motor.

    • Yep I guessed as much. You'll find life much easier with a large block something like this -  https://wholesalepaint.com.au/products/dura-block-long-hook-loop-sanding-block-100-eva-rubber-af4437 This is a good demo video of something like this in use -    You have turned your small rock chip holes into large low spots. You'll need to fill and block these low spots.  It's always a little hard not seeing it in person, but yes I would go ahead and lay filler over the whole area. Have a good look at the video I linked, it's a very good example of all the things you're doing. They went to bare metal, they are using guide coat, they are doing a skim coat with the filler and blocking it back. If what you're doing doesn't look like what they are doing, that's a big hint for you
    • The odometer does go up when driving.  Does this tell it is an issue with the speedometer itself?    Where can I look for replacement cluster? Or speedo? I can likely do the repair.. Will ER34 cluster work on HR34? Or do I need a HR34 20GT S2 specifically lol
    • Mine's a bit bigger at 70x150mm roughly. The spots are flat, just can feel the edges if I dig my nail into it. I did fix some other other ones by both using my finger to sand that small spot (I'm a bit wary of doing this and creating hot spots and a bigger mess) and I also did sand over it flat and others, but this also worried me a bit because if I create an overall low spot on the panel on paint that is good.  Correct me if I'm wrong but as long as it's flat even if I can feel the edges, I can put filler because it will all be level once I sand it? I can see myself going in a circle after sanding guidecoat with 320 grit if for example the panel is flat with my hand but because I sanded the guidecoat I could have created a low spot again somewhere. Unless where I'm going wrong is what I mentioned previously where I didn't go low enough on the grits. It's 1 step forward and 2 step backwards here haha. I'll probably need to experiment with it more. Last time I go back to bare metal lol.
    • Thanks for the details mate , for me I think being a daily driven and happy with a basic tune (630Nm and 310kw) . Seems to be working well I just put on a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 should help put the power down. I'm going to start looking a brakes and LSD in the future so I might reach out to you on options to upgrade the brakes. Cheers - Dee
    • I have a HR34 GT... RB20DE My speedo doesn't work! The rest of the gauges seem to work, fuel and RPM. I did not notice if my odometer was going up when driving last.  Any ideas? Speed sensor? Hopefully atleast... Gauge cluster perhaps? Or is that unlikely because the other gauges are working?   Any insight is appreciated. This is a rather new to me car. Lol
