Sorry for all the questions here but I have got some pretty good prices on the Garrett GT2871R kit for the RB25.

Would this be the closest Garrett solution to the HKS GT-RS?

What are the pro's and con's of the GT2871R vs Hypergear ATR43 SS-1?

I am after a reliable 250rwkw responsive, driveable street/track car and I don't mind paying for a good turbo if it is warranted :thanks:

You still need a T3 turbine housing for the GT2871.

i brought one from tunehouse sydney strait from the hks in japan i just put this kit drove it for two days now i sent my ecu off for a nistune but holy hell!!!

just by the swap no other mods made the car pick up 50X better full boost is around 3000 rpm :D the kit comes with every think as in pics even heat shilds around sillicone joint ..

if you get it and its the real deal you wount be let down :thumbsup:

I was quoted on a full bolt on kit to suit an RB25 so I'm assuming that it comes complete with everything I need including housings etc

I would take the time to find out exactly what turbine housing they intend supplying you with as Garrett don't make one in a T3 footprint for that turbo.

My experience was that the GCG hiflow was really close to the GT-RS and they are much cheaper by comparison. Some of the Hypergear options look interesting at the price also such as the SS1 (apologies if I have the model wrong).

I have no doubt that you will be very happy with the GT-RS if you go that way. It is definitely a whisker more responsive than the 2835ProS that has replaced it but I prefer the more linear delivery of the ProS in general.

The GT-RS behaves like a kid with ADHD and it is fantastic for cut and thrust driving especially considering it was strapped to the fat stagea with all its extra weight.

It might be worth pricing a HKS 2835 Kai (the new version) thru Jessestreer as well.

You are probably going to get some grief from some people on buying name brand turbos like HKS but new Jap kits are true bolt on options so you pay some coin upfront but save on the frigging around factor and with their HKS specific housings they work very well.

The SS-1 looks like a nice option also but Hypergear has only just finished the R&D on it (like last month!) and he is only one man with limited resources so it is still pretty much an unknown quantity at this stage (as well as being a bush bearing)

I want to do this job once and do it right, I have gone for the best bang-for-buck option on everything else for my car so far but I do not want to compromise on the turbo or engine performance.

It comes on very soon and very hard but does start losing a bit of pull up top (which is easily sorted with a hit of gas lol).

Since when isn't the GCG turbo brand new? All the rotating bits are brand new. The non-moving bits are cleaned and the whole assembly goes back on in the stock location with stock lines and is definitely cheaper to re-install than any other turbo as it is the one and only true bolt on since it is the same turbo. $1800 last time I checked.

I think the GCG is better bang for your buck. I back to back tested the GCG (OP6 rear) and the HKS GT-RS same dyno within a week. We had issues with making the power expected from car and it all pointed to the turbo after testing and ruling out lots of other parts. So I bit the bullet and bought a GT-RS for reasonable money and it performed almost identically. On the dyno (which is not proof of anything much necessarily) they were very close, the GT-RS made a whisker more power slightly earlier(maybe OP6 housing makes it slightly lazier than and R33 rear??) but made similar top end. I believe the GT-RS is the better turbo but bang for buck the GCG was better value as the performance on the dyno looks very similar.

Conflict with other views? You breathe on the GT-RS is wants to go. It is very responsive and ramps onto boost so easily any gear any time. A great turbo.

I think this is the ducks nuts turbo on an R33/34 but much higher cost. The stagea has a weight penalty of +300kg to lug around so the extra response of the GT-RS is pretty handy in traffic. The 2835ProS needs a slightly larger throttle opening to get it moving by comparison. With less weight you might not notice the difference?!?!

I think each of these turbos have positives as they all perform well on RB25's and as the performance improves the cost goes up. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Interesting that the GCG hi flow ($2k on GCG website) was so similar in performance to the GT-RS on the dyno... It is certainly a good option to consider.

The 2835 Pro S seems to have been superseded by the GT2835KAI but I don't want to drop the extra $500 on it... the GT-RS is already a stretch and I need injectors as well! (got a good price on some Tomei 555cc)

Very interesting , Woolverine I was just looking at the GTRS pic and the one in your link and it hit me that the GT2835 KAi uses both of the GTRSs housings but a slightly different style of port shrouding on the comp housing .

Sorry if I've asked before and forgot but do you have any results from the 2835 KAi ? I'm not interested personally because that GTRS should suit me fine , just pondering using an adapter and a 0.86 turbine housing I have on it but thats another story .

I don't really know how to do these things on the cheap without buying 2nd hand , I suppose if you had an 0P6 turbine housing and 25 comp housing you could Hi flow it with one of the GT2781R cartridges but with the machine work and custom lines I can't see it being much cheaper than a GCG Hi Flow at Grp buy rates .

It occured to me to go back and have a look at Garretts turbine maps for 0.64 and 0.86 housings on that GT28 turbine and the difference is a little better than I thought .

Have a look at the flow rates of the GT28 0.86 AR and te GT30 0.63 AR .

Interesting that the GT28 turbine in its larger housing slightly outflows the GT30 in its smallest housing . Hmmm .

Some of the current hypergear stuff use GT28 cast turbine housings. Stao cuts them up, T3s em and adds on the skyline specific rear.

Im sure if you ask nicely he could EASILY make one .86, T3, 6 bolt rear and aptly sized for the GTRS turbine before posting it out to you for an attractive figure. Come on disco, be a go getter! Imagine it works out well.. It would start a frenzy of people buying garrett CHRA's an moded HG housings! Cut cost GTRS!

    • I swear at my GKTech ones every time I have to take them apart and replace a spherical. But I wouldn't swap them for anything else. They absolutely slay every other option, at least in terms of how they actually work. You sure you don't want to live with bearings? I mean, they don't have "ball bearings". They are rod ends and sphericals throughout. Tough as nuts, even though I have found more than one way to wear them out.
    • From when I was looking at getting the 86 engineered for the turbo, the joint said to put in a few euro 5 or 6 cats, then tune the car on a nice clean E85 tune When I was looking at a turbo for the MX5, it was basically the same thing, a couple of cats and a nice clean tune Although, it will depend on the year of the Jeep IRT emmisions standards required, and what mods are done, especially if it has a newer engine installed that requires a higher Euro
    • Yeah - but it's not actually that easy. There are limits for HC, CO, NOx and particulates. Particulates shouldn't be a concern in any petrol engine unless trying to comply to the very latest Euro standard. But getting a tune right so that all the others stay within limits AT THE SAME TIME is not a trivial exercise. You couldn't possibly get it right by just guessing at the tuner's dyno, unless he had a 4 gas analyser up the pipe, which is not often the case these days. It used to be. Every decent shop that did "tune ups" (as opposed to tuning) would have a 4 gas analsyer. Perhaps there's still quite a few of them around these days. But most "tuners" are only watching O2 and power readings.
    • Slight segway but the most expensive part of the whole thing which I would have thought would only be required for an engine size/type swap, not a VIV test, is emissions testing.  That's when you get into the big bucks.  I can't remember the exact price now but I got quotes for the GT-R based on swapping to RB30 (not that anyone bothers doing it legally anymore...) and it was around $4500 just for that alone.  The guy that does them manipulates the tune on the vehicle to make sure it passes.  The cheaper option is to book into Kangan Batman Tafe (I think that's where it was) and hire their tester.  Allegedly you're not allowed in there with the car though so not in a position to tweak anything to make sure the vehicle passes.  I'm sure in this day and age of ultra tuneable ECU's you could get the tuner to program a special efficiency (clean) tune that emits the lowest amount of particulates possible that would pass the test.  It might only make 50kW's but as long as it passed who cares!
