Birnie
Hey people, :wavey: I need to buy myself some real tools. My Kmart cheapos have started snapping. Is the Kmart Motopro brand ok? Just want something better quality than the $20 sets but dont' need the $500 set. What do you guys recommend? (i did search but didn't find much) Thanks..Birnie :bond: Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/36921-tool-kits-for-maintenance/ Share on other sites
blind_elk
Kinchrome (sp?) are not bad. I think Autobarn have sets of spanners, etc, at relatively low prices. Then, obviously, Sidchrome, but they can be exxy. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/36921-tool-kits-for-maintenance/#findComment-736850 Share on other sites
51jay
The Repco Pro are a good intermediate range and not too pricey Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/36921-tool-kits-for-maintenance/#findComment-737074 Share on other sites
Sumo
No idea, but I would never be without my snap-on spanners Sidcrome were good, until they turned cheap and nasty. doug3rd
No idea, but I would never be without my snap-on spanners Sidcrome were good, until they turned cheap and nasty. Sumo I second that... I broke a Sidcrome breaker bar and a Sidcrome ratchet today on a really nasty gearbox oil plug... Going to buy a bigger break bar tomorrow... And a new gearbox plug... dAVE
I got a snap on tool box for my 21st and have slowly been building it up. The way I see it, if you look after your tools they will last for life (if they r good enough)... i will also love cars, and work with them for the rest of my life.. so why not invest into some decent stuff so you never need to replace it again. Where I used to work all the guys had snap on apart from the younger guys who got kingchrome cos they are a fair bit cheaper.. bit still pretty good qual. Guest RedLineGTR
get a good set and it will last you a lifetime, as most things in life you get what you pay for Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/36921-tool-kits-for-maintenance/#findComment-739025 Share on other sites
Birnie
Yeah, i guess i'm going for a bit for more of a cheapy as i don't know that much about cars and do pretty minimal amount of work on them. The plan is to learn more and more and I'm getting there slowly. The Kmart Motorpro had a 230 piece set for $199. Had heaps of stuff in it in a 2 draw set Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/36921-tool-kits-for-maintenance/#findComment-739187 Share on other sites
Sumo
Look for a probably a full set of 3/8 sockets, a set of metric spanners, and a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar or rachet (for servicing). That would be the very least, To get to the spark plugs (removing the 2500 Twin Cam cover) you will also need allen keys. These basic bits should get you through just the very basic self maintanence. Birnie
Quick follow up.... I did a look around at everything awhile ago just to get an idea and was suprised how expnsive things can be and just let the idea slide for awhile. But yesterday, the Motopro ones for $199 had been reduced to $129 so i bought them. Heaps of stuff. Don't think the quality is right uip there but it looks ok. Has 3 different sized ratchers, sparkplug sockets, allen keys and more plus a 4 draw chest to keep it in. Just thought I'd pass it on in case someone else needs some quite cheap stuff. The special ends very soon so I'd get in there if you want em.. Thanks....Birnie out Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/36921-tool-kits-for-maintenance/#findComment-763245 Share on other sites
Birnie
Oh yeah, and although its not a lifetime guarantee, it does have a 10yr guarantee Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/36921-tool-kits-for-maintenance/#findComment-763248 Share on other sites
Bl4cK32
The main thing i noticed when i bought my Stanley tool kit, is how well the tool actually fits the nut etc, that its supposed to. Ie a 14mm open end spanner fits a 14mm nut with NO play in it. Cheap and nasty tools always seem to not quite fit and end up rounding off more nuts than they take off.
