My R32 Gtr Vspec1 Project Car

Recommended Posts

Well I've finally got my car booked in to get a once over and a run in tune on Friday May the 4th with Pro Automotive in Moonah so can't bloody wait till thats done. Anyway since my last update I've broken 2 thermostat housings the first one was leaking round one of the bolt holes, pulled it off and it was cracked near the hole got a secondhand one off a mate and put that on the other day barely even tightening it up and bam broke that one too so I've ordered a new one of Kudos motorsport hopefully should be here early this week so I can get it put on (I'm not doing it cause I'm obviously doing something wrong lol) and get the car running and warmed up a few times to flush the cooling system a bit. I'm getting a new FPR as the one I've got is leaking out of the bungs so I'm going to get an Aeromotive one with O-ring seals to try and avoid all the thread sealing crap.

I got the front bar back on the car and although it is in pretty rough shape and needs a paint asap it's starting to look alot like a car again. I dragged my half finished splitter out from under the house too and test fitted that for a laugh. Iwas going to stick with a full fiberglass undertray but I've decided to cut that out and rivet an aluminnium undertray to the bottom of the splitter.

Anyway thats a job for way in the future when I've actually got some cash and time again but for now I started cutting out my catch can/radiator overflow and mocking it up ready for Jack to weld it all together for me.

Well thats all for now Hopefully have some more pics of bits and pieces next weekend as I've got to get it all sorted out and ready for the mechanic in a fortnight then hopefully some video of it going on the trailer under it's own steam.

Well I haven't updated this in a while as I haven't been too impressed with what's been going on. I got my new Aeromotive FPR and installed that and set the fuel pressure (seals a treat and looks really good) I hade up some pod filter adapters for my AFM's and got some mushroom pod filters installed. Got my new thermostat housing from Kudos Motorsport and when I removed the broken one I finally realised what the problem was. It seems that the thermostat was slipping at the last moment when tightening the housing up causing it to get jammed between the housing and the block which then cracked the housing so to remedy this I glued the housing into the block with a little bit of sealant to stop it moving then put the housing on. Worked a treat and after putting a radiator sock in the radiator I proceeded to warm the car up.

Car warmed up fine idled great we mucked around with the injector duty cycle a bit but it all looked pretty good so I decided to test out the clutch. Foot in and wouldn't go into gear. I turned it off jacked it up and got under there to try and bleed it a bit more but no difference. In the end I had to remove the little for that attaches the pedal to the master cylinder and adjust it right out. Let me tell you that is NOT a fun job when it's all still in the car.

Anyway got it adjucted out and started the car and hey presto my clutch worked! Did a few engagements up and down the driveway and then i let Jack check out the pedal feel which is really really light but engages nice and firmly when I noticed there was a shitload of smoke coming out of the exhaust. I got Jack out of the car and we had a look and decided that when my old turbo's leaked it must've filled the exhaust with oil and that I really should clean it out before getting it tuned. So I jacked it up that night and removed the exhaust and cannon and gave it a flush with degreaser and decided I'd give the muffler a quick polish.

I originally wasn't going to remove the Y-pipe but thought I better and glad I did cause once removed I looked up into the dump pipes and noticed that the front one was coated with fresh oil. f**k ME this is exactly what happened with the car before I pulled the engine out. But a brand new turbo leaking oil past the seal surely I couldn't be so unlucky. Well turns out I am that unlucky. I went to my tuner and asked him his opinion he reckoned faulty seal so I had to cancel tuning. I asked my engine builder he reckoned faulty seal. I went and asked a friend down here running a similar setup with the same turbo's in his race car he reckoned faulty seal.

I rang Mick from Boostn Imports where I bought the turbo's from and he was really helpful. He got me to check the oil pressure which at the oil filter housing was fine. I aslo checked to see that I didn't have a blocked oil drain which I didn't. In the end Mick got me to send it up to MTQ in QLD who inspected it and let me know last week that it's all 100% and has suggested that I need to check the pressure at the turbo feeds and use an inline restrictor in each to reduce the amount of oil going into the turbo's. So thats where I'm at at the present moment. Waiting to get my turbo back, need to try and sort out getting some restricted Banjo bolts made up and then fitting everything back up and checking to see if it will work.

I am almost to the point of throwing in the towl with this car. If I had a shed of my own I would be locking it in there and forgetting about it for 12 months but unfortunately it's in my brothers shed and he need's it outta there so I have to get it up and going to get it out of his way. In hindsight I should've put on a GT35/40R with custom Manifold from the guy who made the manifolds for my twins and then if I had these drama's everything would've been so much simpler to get to and fix. But I am where I am and I've come too far with this setup to swap now so perseverence is the best option.

Not yet man I got my turbo back last thursday and went to my engine builder yesterday and he grub screwed one of the banjo bolts while I waited so that'll be easy enough. I was just pissed that I only took one in cause I was trying to get 2 replacements from Enzed and get them done so I could swap them out if I needed the stock ones again but they didn't have them. Now I have to try and get the other one to him sometime next week so I can put it all back together next weekend and see if it fixes the problem. Fingers crossed.

Is that the one at basky? Yeah I hope to be there even if it's not rego'd yet. It'll probably be a perfect day for me being test and tune as I'll still be running it in.

Well it's awesome little bumpy in patches but nice tight drivers track. I took my old 31 around there twice and had an absolute ball. Are you from devonport? With a gunmetal 32 GTR?

I love how you've persevered with this car, the 32 gtr is a car I've always wanted to own but the unreliability and cost of repairs it what turned me away from them. Well done!

Cheers guys trust me it's been a ride and a half and it's not even going lol. Going to put my turbo back on this weekend and get everything hooked up. My engine builder is fitting grub screws in my banjo bolts and redrilling them ATM so hopefully have them by friday and get this fired up Saturday arvo to check if it works (fingers crossed). If all goes to plan then I'll book it in to get tuned before the end of the month cause I'd really like to get to the test and tune day on at Baskerville first weekend of August which would be perfect to put a few kms on it while being able to keep an eye on everything.

Hey man thanks. Na the bad luck didn't stop there unfortunately. I got it all back together, running and booked into tune but when I was warming it up to bleed the coolant I noticed it was still smoking like a train. So the tune at the mechanics turned into a diagnosis day and it turns out my oil pressure was off the show at 115psi at idle and 150psi at 2000rpm so it was forcing oil into the turbo again even with the restrictors fitted. So after speaking to the mechanic and asking everyone on here we've come to the conclusion that the pressure relief valve must be stuck shut so it's out with the engine again and off with the pump. :verymad: Needless to say i took it straight home and locked it up in the driveway and haven't touched it since lol. over the last 5 weeks I have been helping my old boss move workshops to a shed thats about 8 times the size of the old one so once he's moved in I'll take it in there and use the hoist to rip the negine out and take it to the mechanics to get him to have a look at it. Who knows I might even get around to respraying it while it's in there lol.

Well like always I ignored the car for twice as long as I intended but I finally got around to pulling out the engine and taking it back to the engine builders for them to have a look at the oil pump issue. Turns out the TRUST oil pump I bought off a member on here looks like a chinese ripoff! The pressure relief valve needs to open 16mm to fully open up but can only travel 9mm before it hits the bung. Also only has an RB25 pressure spring in it. Turns out you get f**ked over when you TRUST some people lol.

$1200 down the drain!

Oh well got to laugh I guess.

So now I'm just trying to decide what pump to use without breaking the bank. Builder says N1 should be fine I'm thinking either N1 with reimax gears or NITTO but either option has me looking either side of a grand. Car may turn out to be slightly less track and slightly more street depending on which pump I choose lol. Decisions decisions.

Do it once mate and buy the Nitto pump.

Sucks to see your having such bad luck with it but stick with it. It will all be worth it in the end.

Also even though the twins are giving you a bit a grief they are the best option for a responsive street/track day gtr.

Good luck, Chris.

What about the important part, which are the gears in it?

Not sure man I'm gonna go have a look at it this arvo. Matt talked about modifying it up but I'm not sure whether I want to take that risk. I'll see what he reckons.

Cheers man yeah I'm gonna stick with the twins and I'll definately see this through to the end just may take me a while longer than I had hoped lol.

    • thanks for heads up on actuators - will sort something as back up or solution as yes dont need that have enough trouble but no doubt some addition of something to spares boxes is required yes have a clue about WTAC but nothing has been officially put out yet so will wait to see exact details Pro class is, has been and will become a draw card for lap records and one off builds for show and thats about it I think - be interesting to see how open they make it Pro am is the old Pro in reality Open class will be split into 2 with slicks and 050's with no doubt slight variances in allowable drivers and changes in aero Clubsprint + apparently a true street class   They have to and are refreshing it all and bringing things up to current standards and need to 100% adhere to rules because whether people like it or not / or say it or not - for alot of competitors it is sheep stations and has been for a while when Im getting told I was illegal because i cut my rear bumper too high and yet others where in the grey areas of legality with everything from engines, suspension, ride heights and more serious influences it actually got quite out of control and heated this year so as much as I may be impacted by some of the changes and prob spit the dummy when I have to spend money changing things I think its a good thing for all

    • Start with a multimeter, and see if you're getting power at the TPS. There should be a manual for your car somewhere on these forums and it'll have the info for what closed TPS signal voltage is, and how it should sweep to full throttle. Same as for other sensors / valves.   Have you checked things like your base timing etc? See if anything looks amiss there too?
