You have motivated me to build my own 32 gtr. There's just something about the car that I love. Have you tested your car on dyno yet? Would love to see some pics of dyno. Anyways good luck with it all! You have done an amazing job on the car.

Hey Gary thanks for the praise. It's still a long way from where i want it to end up but it'll get there. And no I havent had it on the dyno still waiting to get my engine back from the engine builders (for the second time) once they put in the new oil pump. Dont worry I'll have more pics than you can poke a stick at when it's running! And good luck with your future build.

Well finally got my engine back from the builders AGAIN. $1400, a new N1 pump with Reimax gears and a set of big end bearings later and it should be good to go. Hopefully get it back in the car and running this coming friday saturday.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well after a long tiring weekend I finally got the motor back in and running. All seems to be good ran it upto temp today and it idles away happily burnt out most of the oil residue in the exhaust. Still a little bit smokey but should burn off when I get it tuned. I do need a new Oil Pressure Gauge though to get an accurate pressure reading as the one I've got isn't working anymore so going to spend the money and get a decent Jap one.

I drilled out the spotwelds and removed the centre of the radiator support panel when I took the engine out last time made it so much easier to put the engine back in with the box on. Just bought some hex head bolts and nuts and bolted it back in place.

Car was absolutely filthy after sitting in the shed for 4 months so gave it a bit of a scrub.

post-58307-0-80138000-1363504121_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-14859300-1363504184_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-14308700-1363504243_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-94933500-1363504297_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-15772600-1363504359_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-49753200-1363504420_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-73400300-1363504499_thumb.jpg

Finally starting to look like a car again. I also rolled the rear guards so they clear the tyres and while I was doing it I noticed that my right hand wheel has nearly 12mm more camber at the top compared to the left so gonna have to sort that out and check all the alignment before it goes back on the road.

Still got to weld up my catch can put in a Highflow cat and sort out the oil pressure gauge but then it should be ready for tuning.

Cheers man yeah I was highly unmotivated when I started putting it back together on friday arvo but by last night I just wanted to keep working on it lol. Anyway I haven't been sleeping while my engine was away I started repairing my front bumper. Someone had cut a big 8 inch x 3 inch hole in the front of it between the N1 vents and then tried to repair it but all the filler had started cracking away so I decided that if I was repairing that I would modify it and delete the area where the number plate sits as I'll be relocating the number plate to the side.

So I set about cutting it all out.

post-58307-0-62687900-1363589953_thumb.jpg

Then I cut some sections out of a VE commodore sideskirt that I pinched from my old work (same type of plastic as the GTR bar) and then used a special Fusor 2 part plastic glue to glue the new sections in.

All sanded back ready for some plastic filler

post-58307-0-60149800-1363590174_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-93950200-1363590236_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-85631700-1363590296_thumb.jpg

And the finished shape. Still need to fill in a few pinholes and give it a bit more of a fine sand before priming but its starting to take shape.

post-58307-0-82864400-1363590402_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-28264000-1363590480_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-58698100-1363590559_thumb.jpg

So with that done I decided to get about stripping the old paint from the bumper. I was originally going to sand it all but then I remembered seeing this before I left the bodyworks.

post-58307-0-27271400-1363590615_thumb.jpg

Paint stripper for plastic. Works really well on refinished bumpers and cause mine looked like it had been painted numerous times I thought it would be perfect.

post-58307-0-10085500-1363590706_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-56006800-1363590774_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-35379500-1363590839_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-08698800-1363590896_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-14695900-1363590952_thumb.jpg

It says on the label that it wont work on factory baked enamel but it seemed to take most of the silver off as well so the bumper might have been a new one painted and put on the car at some stage in the past. Still need to get another can and go over the last few bits as you need it on there pretty thick but nearly all the black you can see is back to plastic which means a shitload less sanding and great for all the areas that are hard to sand.

And I also decided that my car needed the GTR spoiler put back on but when I had a look at the spoiler I decided it needed a little something to set it apart. I started looking for a lip extension then just decided to make my own.

So I went to the fiberglass shop and got some structural foam and cut it into the rough shape and statred glueing it all together.

post-58307-0-80433500-1363591437_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-72658500-1363591442_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-32716600-1363591446_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-19023100-1363591451_thumb.jpg

Once I was happy enough with the basic shape I put a coat of fiberglass matting over it and let it set.

post-58307-0-18001600-1363591457_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-88298200-1363591461_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-95979600-1363591466_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-28554800-1363591793_thumb.jpg

Once dry I cut off any excess and gave the whole lot a sand to even out the main lumps and bumps and started with the filler.

post-58307-0-35971500-1363591797_thumb.jpg

It took ages to get the shape to a nice even curve cause it has 2 curves the up and down and the left to right but I got there in the end.

After I got it to this stage I decided on something drastic but I'll wait until it's a bit closer to completion before I let the cat out of the bag.

Car is coming along great. Always regret not getting a black GT-R !

Cheers man yeah it was a toss up when I went to paint the engine bay whether or not to put the car back to the stock silver cause it's a Vspec but I just love the look of Black 32R's they look the fattest in my opinion.

Will be good to see this back on the road... impressive build thread, great read!

Yeah I can't wait either. Got a few small things left to do like replace the de-cat pipe with a High flow cat, weld up my catch can, put in my new oil pressure sensor and replace the air filters and then it's off to the tuners.

Brilliant job man.

I like the fact that you fabricate and do most of the work yourself.

You can tell that you thoroughly enjoy working on your car and get satisfaction from it.

Subscribed as well

Cheers guys. Same goes to you Ant really quality build your doing and great results with all the DIY. Shows what you can do with a little know how and a bit of elbow grease. (Not to mention the money you save lol.)

Yeah I love mucking around with cars especially my own and I'm always looking for little ways to make it that bit different from other 32's hence why I try and do/make/modify most of the parts myself.

There are definately times I don't enjoy doing things myself like pulling turbo's off when the engine's in or removing/replacing the engine twice in six months lol but for the most part my only complaint is not having enough time to work on it.

I love how the projects/buildups thread is like pure porn for an R32 owner at the moment so many great builds on the go it's hard to keep up!

superb build mate. A lot of time and effort in this. I especially love the spoiler extension you made. Looks great!

Cheers dude yeah it DID look good didn't it lol ;) Na I think you'll like it even better when it's finished!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I was going to keep it hush hush until I'd made some decent progress on it and you could get a good idea on how it was going to turn out but I'm not gonna get a chance to touch it for a while now so I'll show you where it's currently at.

I was looking at the spoiler after I'd got it to the shape I was happy with and I had a thought......... R33 GTR spiolers look pretty cool how they have the adjustable blade............. Man this thing is pretty heavy............ How can I drop the weight and also make the centre adjustable?

After pondering this question for the best solution I thought f**k it I'll just cut it apart and deal with it from there lol. So I did!

post-58307-0-65430200-1365753138_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-95652200-1365753142_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-79389500-1365753145_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-38960000-1365753149_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-88054600-1365753152_thumb.jpg post-58307-0-32321700-1365753157_thumb.jpg

Once I had done that I decided that I really needed a bootlid to mount the two end plates to so that I can work out exactly where I need to put in the shafts at the front of the blade so it will swivel properly and also so I can ensure it is all the right length with nice even gaps.

I didn't want to drill holes in my existing lid as it doesnt have any and I know how hard it is to find them without holes so I found a mint lid off a guy on here that had the right spoiler holes already including the N1 lip holes so that was a big score.

Anyway I initially was going to get the centre to the exact shape I want and take fiberglass moulds of it so I could make a carbon fibre copy of the blade but I have now decided to just make a fiberglass one and paint it either satin to match my wheels or maybe gloss. Either way the whole centre section will be remade from fiberglass.

I have also been trying to work out how to make it adjustable and how to pin it or lock it off in each position. I originally thought of using stainless turnbuckles fron the boot up to the bottom of the spoiler which I think would look tough in an industrial sort of way but wouldn't quite suit the direction of the car so now I think I'm going to make provisions so I can flush mount end plates of 4mm aluminium between the blade and the mounts and have that protrude out of the bottom just enough to have a hex bolt into a nut to lock it in place. Then when I raise the spoiler I can screw the bolt into another hole further up thats normally covered.

Anyway I'm sure that alot of people will say why are you wasting so much time and effort when you could just buy an extension or a whole new wing but I really dont mind. At the end of the day I will have a one off spoiler just the way I have pictured it in my head.

That's awesome work man, can't wait to see the finished product, the effort your putting in will be worth it in the end cuz yours will be Unique, just a question about tho, have you thought about flattening out the lip in the middle of the blade So the air flows smoothly over it?

Cheers man yeah I did think about that. Just not sure if it will look too far gone from the GTR wing then. I might still do it not sure. I have to make the mould in a top and bottom half anyway so I might take a mould of it how it is atm and then modify the top and if it looks any good take a mould of that too then I can make up both blades and decide which one I like better. At the end of the day though it's purely a cosmetic thing for me and I'm not too fussed about getting every bit of extra areodynamic advantage I can. Not yet anyway lol.

    • The MX5 has had some annoying rattles in both front doors over bumps So I installed fancy pants door bushings, which stopped all of the rattles with the windows up, but........with the windows down there was still rattles, so after some googling,  and a chat with MX5 Mania, I got some new door to glass weather seals, all the rattles, windows up, or down, are gone now Shout out to MX5 Mania, the weather seals were on sale, and when I head to Dural to pick the up they even fitted them for me for free I did see a "really" nice Blue NA sitting out front   and this Black NC PRHT that looked like it has sat in the sun for its whole life and never had a wash, the clear coat was non-existent, an it looked horrible, really horrible, but, it had a nice turbo kit with over 200kw, the thing went like a cut snake, bagging the rears through the gears and dosing like a champ 😍 But, as I've always stated, I am keeping my NC na, I'm happy with the current power the car makes In other news: MX5 Mania do a drive in drive out turbo kit, the only minor additional part recommended for boosting my car, as it sits now, is a oil cooler, and that bonnet vents are definitely required for track use Aftermarket version look a bit to "racecar" spec I wonder how Focus RS bonnet vents would look?????
    • Paint is only structural when applied to the outside of Chinese and Indian cars. Otherwise it should never be present between mechanical joints that were intended to be metal to metal. Pain slips, slides, cracks, compresses, and add thickness that wasn't intended to be there. It comes firmly under the category of "just no".
    • appreciated it thanks   There are threads on the adaptor. I rear re anodising but didn’t know it will reduce strength   re mating services needing to be flat/ not painted, why would that be?
