I see LOTS of big hp cars on here with 3-500hp with big high mount turbos, external gates, non standard manifolds and all sorts of bling. How do you guys live with the fact that your car could be defected any day at an RBT after doing nothing wrong, are you guys seriously willing to return everything to stock, stock turbos, stock intake, stock computer, stock injectors to pass a defect?

How do you get around? I mean surely it is only so long before you get it defected? The only option I see is to keep the car standard looking, low mount turbo or highflow with stock looking everything, yet every second car I see has ridiculous high mounts with bling this bling that, how does it work?

Staying away from hotspots like McDonalds late night meets or cruises through the city late at night where every other dickhead on 22" chromes with white leather interior is a good start.

I got defected when my GTR was standard 2.6L, standard turbos etc. Converted to a single for a fair while then back to twins and havnt had any issues since, to give you an idea here's what the single looked like (not subtle);

Also worth noting, the car is engineered as is with RB30 and twins.

How to avoid getting defected is easy, I'm talking about when you finally do get defected how do you pass? Surely the people with top mount turbos are f**ked?

I've used my 'exemption to modification' letter for my engine swap to get out of it a few times, also it looks stock as well which helps. But what about guys with big top mount turbos, shiny bling fuel rails, clear timing covers etc, surely as soon as the bonnet is popped = defect and then you have to take it back to stock, sounds like a huge pain in the ass.

Depends on what you're defected for and how badly.

For example one of mine on the list was that the airbox was too shiny (ARC airbox on stock twin turbo setup), I just stood there, smiled and said no worries I'll have it fixed. You can bet that if I started mouthing off or not showing respect, the already questionable list wouldve been quite longer. Straight to an inspection station the next day and all passed with no changes (none were needed).

If you're sent for EPA thats a whole other story and I have a feeling thats really what you're trying to get at?!

Yeah I get how to avoid and how to get passed, I'm just asking how do the guys with engine bays full of every toy and huge top mounts get off, I mean we've all seen HUNDREDS of these examples eg every single magazine vehicle.

Do they honestly turn everything back to stock for the inspection? Is there something I'm missing?

edit: I'm from SA an if you get defected and sent to an inspection here it basically has to be 100% stock or you fail, pretty much any visible mod apart from intake and exhaust is a failure. I'm assuming that is the same as EPA in other states? If you get pulled over with a big stinking top mount do you get instantly sent to EPA? Because here in SA you'd get defected which sounds like the same thing.

Just because you see it in a magazine doesnt mean those cars are all out on the streets, a lot of them are trailer sailors or spend their time in the garage and even then the ones that go out and do get defected have to do exactly what you said, eg turn it back to stock(ish) and keep going back until it passes.

There really are some horror stories floating around out there about defects, how much of them are fact vs fiction though is anyone's guess

Ive been defected a few times for small things, however the last time (a year ago now) i was DECC'd.

In that time the car was getting another overhaul so i wasnt really bothered. Now that the car is finished it will be hitting the road soon. Probably only to get done again in another couple of months :) all part of game unfortunately.

But as Steve said, stay away from all the hot spots etc. I was just really unlucky to be pulled over by rogue HW patrols >_<

As for EPA/DECC there are 2 ways to pass, de-mod to the point that it passes or the "other" way :)

My car bra helps, they usually look at it and decide its just too much hassle waiting for me to take it off.

I think staying cool, no mouthing off and your age helps as well. I've been pulled over for RBT heaps of times but that is it. I was even chased for an RBT once and no problems. I passed the RBT site and they didn't wave me in so I kept going. They chased me and pulled me over about 20km up the highway.......I was doing my 100kmh, I guess it took them a while to get to their car and get going etc and I have no idea what speed they did to catch me. They had no issues with me, the officer admitted that they didn't wave me in, but they must have changed their mind after I went past.

I've never had to pop the bonnet, but even if I did I'd be OK unless they dug deeper or really knew their stuff - low mount HKS with a 3076 deep down, the bonnet is no problem.

in Sydney you can go for the "im240" test at the EPA for no cost.

you need to do this to have an intercooler engineered.

when it comes to top mount turbos, after market intakes, intercoolers, wastegates, BOV's as long as everything is plumbed correctly and the car is passing emissions there is no reason why it can not be engineered.

obvisouly anything adjustable E.G Fuel reg, computers & controllers "should not be passed as it can be "adjusted"

a roll cage can be engineered it need to have certin clearance of drivers/ passangers head in accident etc.

most things can be engineered it just comes done to how its done

or be like Paulie, he puts around 500 kms on his GT-R every 6 months :whistling:

Your a deadset nob mate. What i do with my car has sweet FA to do with you!

Why is it such a big deal that I don't go smashing through the anti just begging to be belted by a HWP! I am yet to see you at a competitive hillclimb or down at a DECA in Victoria which I drove the car to and from!

You have seen my driveway and KNOW how much of a pain it is to get the GT-R out! Grow up!

I think if you expect to have alot of mods and drive the car alot then your asking for it. Thats why I bought the car I bought. Has power and handling but looks stock under the hood.

The poeple that have big turbo setups or crazy shinny mods would not drive them very much.

Plus you have to know where to avoid driving, i've purposely not gone out just so the risk is lower just in case you get that one cop who wants to defect you for handbrake clicks or washer fluid lol.

I have often wondered this too... heaps of guys selling skylines have highmount turbos, manifolds etc... how are they getting a RWC to sell these cars?

It's funny when they've got blue hoses everywhere, big highmount etc etc and they're making 300rwkw, which isn't much more than my car, and my engine bay looks very very stock. Just not worth all that bling IMO

i suppose a lot of them either have the money to do their cars up to have 500hp and have probably kept a lot of stock parts to put back on, if they got defected.

seriously IMO if you've got shiny stainless piping and blue hoses everywhere and the engine bay looks all non standard then you're asking for it.

i've been pulled over and my car has been checked for everything, seatbelts, washers, wipers exhaust note, BOV, tail lights.

the only thing under my bonnet is the autech style catch can which i've used the std rubber hose and some blue hose to connect it to the engine. but i've tried to hide it.

if anyone asks i just tell them that it is a part that broke and needed replacing and the only replacements they make are those stainless ones. i'd be happy to paint it black though. i dont really care too much.

I've also got just under 500hp and the engine bay looks stock, even the std airbox is still there. its the only part the cop asked about. and its because there is some oil condensation around the edge and i told him it was just because the oiled air filter. if you be polite and give them believable reasons for things then they'll usually let you off unless they see something strange which is obvious.

it probably helps not hanging arround macca's carpark with your bonnet up.

seriously, anyone is going to assume you've got something non std to show off, or there is something not working properly and you're waiting for RAA.

keep it lookin stock and stay away from hotspots its as easy as that

ya dont need shiny parts to go fast just be sensible when u build ya car up and dont mouth off n be a smartarse or u will get done like my mate that got done for havin a cigarete burn in his passenger seat lshmsfoaidmt

however in saying that only h/w patrol can defect u but i still think they have way to much power over this as they can defect u for absolutley anything so keep it lookin stock and definatley dont mouth off lol

Yeah this is why I keep my car looking 100% stock with all my mods and the ones that are visible pass a regency visit, that and I've talked my way out every time I've been pulled over, I guess I was just wondering what people with their high mounts do, if they don't actually drive the car or they actually do risk it and are willing to take it all back to stock every time they get pulled over, sounds like a massive hassle though.

Paulie, it was a light hearted joke. Sorry if I caused offense

Anything is possible, you just need to be smart about it.

Plumb everything back in and get it all engineered. Its not going to stop the defect but it does make life easy when you come to clear one.

If you have an exhaust that has a silencer, use it. Exhaust noise is their first alarm bell and if they dont hear you they dont normally look for you.

The other thing is to get a decent engineers certificate as most of them arent worth the paper they are written on. Use someone that is going to make you do the drive by noise tests (this should be done for an after market air box) and get an EPA report to go with the engineers. Keep your driving record clean as they will also run the plates and the registered owners licence number before they pull you over and if you have a record thats extensive they will normally treat you differently.

We make about 750hp but the car very rarely see the light of day. About the only thing that would be an issue for us would be the ECU but thats not that hard to work around. It makes it a little easier when you have a non standard engine in the car as a lot of the factory components are simply to hard to fit in

you'll probably find that the people that get defected are regularly defected.

i think that certain cars are targeted if they have been defected before, because honestly police arent that stupid, its easy to figure out that if a car is defected and sent to regency, and has passed. more than likely the owner has put on the same parts they were defected for because they've spend money on them and the car goes seriously faster with its pod and BOV!!

if i had a high mount with external gates i certainly wouldnt be planting it on the streets everyday on my commute to work, but hey, i suppose some people would and they're the ones that will probably be defected for it.

it might also help people not get defected if they're not driving with their hoodie on!

most of the time i see someone pulled over with their bonnet up they're wearing a hoodie and so are all their mates. seriously it shouldnt be that cold inside a car!!

    • No worries at all 🫡 I think the most satisfying things to make are the little bits that are just impossible to find or they're no longer manufactured. Generally I always try to replace parts with OEM wherever possible. This little project is also great because it'll never see the light of day, but strengthen these brackets so it's not just relying on the little standard screws in the headlight plastic. As soon as I saw the standard brackets and screws I thought, "well I'm not going to install with just the screws, the plastic tabs will just snap off". It's crazy how expensive everything has become yeah. But I suppose that's supply and demand; granted it's a lot easier to get brand new genuine parts these days which is fantastic 😊, I don't have to get totally reamed at the local Nissan dealer ha ha We sure are lucky we have all these manufacturers making parts these days, a few really great Australian companies too like Platinum Racing Products and Fit Mint Automotive, what a time to be alive ❤️ . I've got my eye on the RB26 head by PRP as mine has a very fine hairline crack, so that'll need to be addressed some time in the future. If you have any requests or odd things to make feel free to let me know and I can have a crack at making replacement parts ✌️
    • Thanks for sharing this, and BTW if your headlights are in good condition they are worth thousands....you might want to consider replacing them with brand new LED ones like this (https://www.nengun.com/78works/full-led-headlights-r32-skyline) and making enough profit to buy a house in Sydney
    • I'm not sure what sort of shops are nearby, but I'd expect any reasonable exhaust shop could put a cat in it that will not restrict the power that engine makes. Otherwise, if you want to remove it, short lengths that replace the cat are readily available online, search for "de-cat pipes" or "test pipes"
    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all! • Hey everyone, This is my first post apart of the introduction. I tried searching a bit on the forum but couldn't really get a straight answer. I got the car to my mechanic as I felt it being weak. It seems that it was missing on two cylinders due to the injectors. I had all my injectors clean and the car runs much better. The mechanic also confirmed my suspicions that the cat is clogged and needs to be tackled asap. The cat rattles a bit and the hot exhaust warning frequently lights up when driving after getting the injectors clean. In my introduction I was asked about what modification I might be interested in and mentioned a cat delete. From what I was told, this is not really beneficial on the RB20DE and there are more cons than pros.  Could perhaps anyone give some suggestions on what the best course of action would be since the current cat is toast and needs to be removed/replaced anyway? I can also sometimes smell a strong smell of fuel, but I'm not sure if this is related.
