How Do The Big Hp Cars Get Away Without Being Defected?

Recommended Posts

edit: I'm from SA an if you get defected and sent to an inspection here it basically has to be 100% stock or you fail, pretty much any visible mod apart from intake and exhaust is a failure. I'm assuming that is the same as EPA in other states? If you get pulled over with a big stinking top mount do you get instantly sent to EPA? Because here in SA you'd get defected which sounds like the same thing.

Quote for truth.

"SA, the keep your car stock or we will rape you" state. Also i find more appeal with a low mount turbo and a very standard looking engine bay.

sadly a lot of it has to do with how you look (your appearance, your nationality, how many people in your car, your clothes etc). cops will see you driving and form an opinion very quickly based on what they can see and hear. they will also check your licence and record (including any criminal record). once pulled over how you behave then also partially dictates what happens. if you are polite you are in with a good chance. if you're worried and obviously shitting yourself not so good a chance. if your rude or confrontational.... well you get the idea.

the car itself is the next indicator and I'd say the car is actually secondary to the driver. but the big ones on the car are wheels (big chrome wheels and/or bald tyres scream pull me over). next is exhaust, both size/type of cannon and the sound. if you like your car to be L O U D then prepare to occasionally get grief. engine bay is probably the least important. generally if they have you at the point of making you open the bonnet they are at this point dead set of finding something. so regardless of whether your car is off it's tits with a high mount or bone stock you are going to cop something (see steveo getting done for an airbox above). so actually worrying about what's in the engine bay is my last concern.

it's all the other stuff that gets you defected. what's in/not in the engine bay just makes them easier to clear later...

I got out of doing a 2nd gear slide in front of an unmarked car some how after I said I was an electronic engineer, they were all 'well you are educated blah blah this isn't what we expect from people like you' and got off with just an excessive noise fine so I can certainly attest to that, being in slacks and tie probably helped as well along with being polite and saying I was driving like a headless chook.

Yeh attitude is the main thing. I got caught 20km/hr over the limit ammitted i was just giving it a bit and the cop was near encouraging me to say i had a medical emergency to get to so he could let me off, just cause i was straight up and said it was a silly thing to be doing and didnt act like a total dick....

Its easy, moved to a small remote town where there are no cops.thumbsup.gif

I live in Mackay, North Queensland and the cops are not that bad up here, and when they do pull you over , they take photos cause they don't no what they are looking at and then give you a shitty fine that has nothing to do with why they pulled you over for in the first place. (Like excessive tyre smoke when i drive a 4wd GTR WTF).

But on a serious note, i see a lot of f*#kwits cruising around on Friday and Saturday nights cruising up the main street about 50 times a night in piece of shit gtst / silvias with different coloured panels mostly (under coated) with loud exhausts and bov's. Now they are they ones that draw the cops attention straight away because typically they are you guys with bad manners who have no respect for themselves or law and give us import drivers a really bad reputation. Now on they other hand most of my mate's take extremely good care of there rides and present them very well as i like to do with my cars, they all run big power from 500-900hp and when you lift the bonnet they are packed full of goodies and look really nice and would be defect field day for any cop. But we don't go cruising around at night stirring up shit and showing off to everyone (thats what f*#king car shows are for) i like to go cruising during the middle of the day in the middle of the week and i never have any trouble with police because i never see them. And when i have been pulled over its because the police admire our rides and want to have look at them. If you be honest to the police and not a smart arse and give them respect they will generally be let off, I've been let off heaps times in my R33 GTR and it has millions of defects and not even street legal but I present it well and take care of it.

I think it mostly comes down to the individual and there attitude and there is a time and place for these cars. There is no way in hell i would drive my in hell i would drive my R32 GTR with 800awhp down the main street of town any time of the day, because its bad enough trying to drive it anywhere, with its dog box, 2 way diffs, 4inch straight through exhaust etc. It would be like driving around with a big sign on top of your car saying (I'm a f*#king idiot pull me over please). Common sense guys thats all it is.

No body kit, not to loud, suspension at legalish ride height, legal sized tyres on legal sized rims, being fully engineered "and" being 46 helps.

It was the same when I was young rolling in my LJ, if you were smart you could have lots of power ups as long as the outside looked tame, lots of V8s in LC,LJs, Cortinas, Centuras, 454s in HQs and so on, the man was defecting back then but if you were smart you could have big HP is a standard looking car, to many people want to be all "Fast and Furious" looking with body kits, loud exhausts and 10mm of the deck, LOL, IDIOTS.

And yes I have been pulled over and the police have been fine with my high mount and other bits and pieces under the engine bay once they see my engineers report and Im not acting like a tosser.

You only need big tyres/rims on the track, I dont care how mch power your car makes, if you need big tyres "because it cannot get any traction bro" you cannot and should not drive, if I can ride a worked GSXR1100 in the wet you can drive your car on legal tyres.

WHOOOOO, ending rant now.

Gotta love QLD and mod plates. Pretty much makes any engine mod fine :)

Sadly NSW has engineers reports but it still doesnt stop the Police defecting you. All it does is make life easier removing the defect. It shouldnt be that way. If the Police are given the ability to hand out defects they should have a very sound knowledge of what is and isnt legal. I find it pretty stupid to let them defect cars when they dont know what they are defecting lol

If i go into court and try and defend something the judge will ask me if i am qualified and have enough knowledge to be commenting.... fi i dont i will get shot down in flames and made a fool of, so why shouldnt this be the same with the Police and defects. Minus the shooting down in flames and making a fool of as that gets you nowere fast

The police are taught in a limited way to ID illegal mods, they do get it wrong on occasions like before when I had my catch can venting to atmo and he said it was a "pod filter", or Stevos filter box, but they have to know about alot of bits and pieces about the law in numerous ways, and like me they dont get everything right everytime, but they are only doing their job, they keep dangerous cars and drivers of the street which is good, if I have to get plled over every so often so be it.

Yeah I get how to avoid and how to get passed, I'm just asking how do the guys with engine bays full of every toy and huge top mounts get off, I mean we've all seen HUNDREDS of these examples eg every single magazine vehicle.

Do they honestly turn everything back to stock for the inspection? Is there something I'm missing?

Move north and enjoy the sunshine

Yes,

but the discussion is regarding them defecting us after we have spent lots of time & money to make these cars legal for engineering / emissions.

Just do what I did, build the car properly, run a 10 second pass and get a IM240 test and engineers certificate then wave it in their faces when they pull you over.

Then enjoy your 10 second street car.

Its amazing the reaction you get from the police, they dont get angry you are engineered they get happy and excited and give you compliments for doing it the right way.

No it wasnt, you need to do the reading of the first post before the critiqueing of the 11ty post.

Is your car engineered, you should not have any problems then......

How much did the IM240 test cost you ? Including tuning to meet it

Sounds like the best approach of all.

So in nsw can the police still defect you for mods that you have engineered? I only ask because i plan on getting my 33 gtst engineered (just exhaust, intercooler etc, nothing major) but if they can still defect me i dont see the point. I mean obviously if i have these minor mods engineered, and then have a monster high mounted turbo blaring in their faces thats my problem and i can understand that, but if the certificate is worth nothing then whats the point.
