A couple of guys have the idea... raw fuel is injected into the hot exhaust and explodes keeping the turbo spooled up for extended periods of trailing throttle (which in the environment it is designed for amounts to durations measured in 10ths of seconds before WOT).

If you are changing gears better than most grannys you wont get jack from A/L

If it is so important buy an auto.

As fro launch, just another driver aid. Is it going to be you that sets this target time with all the electronic trickery, or are you going to attribute the time to the software boffins @ ECU HQ.

Microtech ECUs can do anti-lag and launch control. Since they have 4 different maps to choose from, Tim Possingham, a tuner here in Adelaide(based at RPM Perf Centre) has a setup that when clutch is depressed, a certain map comes on via switching on clutch that is linked to ext inputs on Microtech ECU and with I think 75% throttle at lights.

This map has heaps of fuel and very retarded timing allowing heaps of unburned fuel into exhaust and therefore pre-spooling turbo.

Then when you dump clutch it goes into normal power tune.

Then change gears, by depressing clutch and goes into anti-lag mode, etc etc

Works well I believe, used in that 300rwkW CA18 180SX that was in Zoom (was running 250rwkW at the time).

Has anyone been using launch control and anti lag for racing.

i would love to know if anti lag is any good for 1/4 mile racing as i need something to keep my boost up between gears.

any recomedations or where to get it would be excellnt.

Hi wreckedhead, you want anti lag because the engine drops off boost on gearchanges. Antilag is a bandaid, it covers the real problem, I always prefer to fix the "real problem".

As TT said, if you are changing gear too slow then learn how to change faster. If the gearbox or clutch operation is preventing you from changing gear faster, then fix the clutch and/or gearbox.

My 20 cents follows .....

If you are changing gear very fast and it still drops off boost on upchanges then you either have a tuning problem, the cooling system has too much air in it or the turbo is too big. So fix the tuning, reduce the intercooler and pipework volume or get a turbo the right size.

I would not want to stick a band aid on the problem for the track, but still have to live with it every day. I'd much rather have it fixed all the time.

PS; If it's a band aid why do WRC's run antilag? They have enough budget to fix the real problem, don't they? Yes they do, but the regulations stop them from doing it. It's one of the side effects of the small restrictors they have to run. Plus they make thousands of gearchanges during a rally and every millisecond on each gearchange counts. For 3 gearchanges per run over 1/4, I would much rather spend my money (buying and maintenance costs) on something that gives a full time result.

Sorry, that was more like 30 cents worth.

you make a good point sk

something you havent covered tho, an a/l setup should you postive pressure at idle... this must help with launching a manual vehicle assuming sufficient traction?

Yep, that's very possible. Maybe I am simply scared off antilag by the amount of damage it does to the engine, particularly exhaust valves and turbines. We used to have to fit new exhaust valves, turbines and covers after every rally on the Celica. It's a bit better now with more sophisicated ant lag software, but the maintenance still frightens me.

I will be with Neil Bates' engine builder next week, I might ask what the Corrolla's look like in that area after each rally.

As said in an earlier post in this thread, the two cars I've see with launch control would generate boost when stationary and waiting to launch.

The GT4 had about 8psi, and the R33 GTS-t had about 4-5psi.

They just had launch control, not anti lag !

i understand what your saying about changing gears, but i change gears as quick as most people if not quicker with shortshift kit, and the gearbox has been modified so that its easier to get the gears to change, but i don think it might be a tuning problem but ill find out soon from croydon on what can be changed to help me out.

  • 3 weeks later...
i got an email from fc datalogic in NZ the guy wrote that anti lag was possible on the standard power fc with the fc datalogic equipment, anyone know if this is true.

There are quite a few different ways of achieving anti lag, it would depend on which way you wanted to run yours.

i just wanan run it or the creek, i just bought a nos kit having it installed at the end of the week, so that will get me to the time i want, but anti lag sounds good to get an even beter time,

    • A locally delivered Infiniti have remote start installed but don't come with the remote start key. You need a new remote start key and they just need it programed. And this is different to making/programing a new key that just starts the car.
    • Cheers, and cheers for sharing so much of the build and also sharing the glimpse of what turns out to bring a lot of us poor decision makers together haha.  I do recommend learning more about how to manage it, if not considering getting a  formal diagnosis.  The discussion with the psychiatrist I got my diagnosis through was quite eye opening, things I'd not even considered to be ADHD related and hadn't mentioned were things she asked about out of the blue and were common themes with people with my flavour of ADHD.   It's not a label for people who are hyperactive and ill-attentive, there's more to it than that and some of it can be much more challenging or damaging - though there are of course two sides to the thing, and a lot of the stuff we have to go through and work on to live with it make us effectively "better" at other things as well. Aside from the fact that there is some argument I could have a bit of ASD seasoning in there (came up during the diagnosis, and neurodiverse things seem to not stay as a cookie cut) I suspect you need to learn more about ADHD if you are puzzled about how hyperfocus could possibly apply.  I *do* personally use "superpower" with quotes deliberately, but it's 100% an ADHD thing due to the exact reason that lack of focus is also an ADHD thing... Loosely speaking the inattentive side of ADHD isn't the inability to focus, it's the inability to control where the focus goes.  Not being able to sleep because brain is more interested in thinking about a stupid thing I said to a girl I liked 30 years ago, not being able to focus on work because my brain is more keen on putting together the torque management strategy we're going to try out with a drag car next weekend, not being able to focus on a conversation with someone I WANT to listen to and respect because there is a flickering light in my peripheral vision.    If I could just stop work and build the torque management setup right there and then I'd not hear anything else until it was done.
    • Maybe you should do some more reading.  Google positive effects of ADHD and you'll get your answers.  One of my personal downsides of ADHD has been talking before I think.   Maybe you have it too?
    • Excuse me for butting in....but which part of ADHD can be considered a superpower? I would have though it far more likely that some ASD comorbidity is more likely to be contributing to an ability to hyperfocus on something. ADHD being aimed somewhat in the other direction. My shed looks like your shed. My whiteboard list of unfinished projects has entries going back 15 years. I know what you're talking about - I just struggle to connect ADHD to the results being discussed.
    • Thanks for reaching out!  It's a blessing and a curse at the same time.  I'm undiagnosed but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it in me... I have more half started projects laying around my house, shed, garden, etc taking up space and money, destroying aesthetics than if I added up all of my mates projects together. But, ADHD gives me the ability to hyper focus on things that no mere mortal could even  comprehend.  A recent pool build is an example of that....  I dont know anyone else that would be dumb enough and focused enough to take on then complete something of that magnitude. I call ADHD a superpower but it can equally be completely destructive if not controlled and focusedon the right places. Addiction is a major concern to ADHD people and thankfully my addictions have been no worse than projects, XBOX, chocolate and being an arsehole! It's often hereditary and my 13 year old son is currently learning how to drive it at the moment. Keep lurking! If i can finally finish this bloody thing at some point it will be a win for all of us ADHD'ers! 🤪
