Im not saying that $1500 isnt much for me personally, but some out there who spend the big $ on parts for rebuilds then a new crank is the least of their problems. Go look in the for sale section and theres a few threads with parts in there like $13K for a block or $11K for a head...add each part of that into a whole setup and the $1500 for a crank suddenly seems insignificant.

agreed. . .its not cheap going fast!

yeah like I said $1500 is not expensive when doing a build with top $ parts. look at the price of the other gear and then decide if using a used crank which is potentially bent is worth it? of all the used RB26 cranks i've seen more were bent than those that were straight. I know a number of people who've bought used cranks only to have them checked and find them unusable and then do it again a couple of times before getting a good one. it doesn't take many used cranks or machining bills to get to $1500.

anyway for the original poster who wants some advice I will give some of my own experience.

fit some aftermarket valve springs. even tomei type A (type B are much better and worth the extra $). that will allow you some headroom if you want to rev and personally I would NEVER fit aftermarket cams with stock springs.

secondly, don't use the tomei pump with your stock capacity sump. yes you have it baffled but the tomei pump flows so much more oil than standard if you run high RPM for any decent length of time you are going to pump it dry. even with the 1.2mm restrictor oil will be pumping up many times faster than it can return to the sump.

consider fitting a larger sump to cope.

the other stuff all sounds fine and good choice on the tomei rods, they are excellent. there's no problem running 500-600hp (engine) on N1 pistons and rings either as long as it's tuned well.

if you do want to run some decent power and boost though I'd consider using a tomei 1.2mm gasket (or other MLS gasket but you already have lots of tomei gear so I suggested that one). even buy the tomei gasket kit. it comes with a lot of the other gaskets you'll need.

good luck. :)

Hello Beer Baron and thankyou for that info.

From what i have gathered from doing research these past few days it looks like im going to go with a Nissan subassembly assembled and strip and recheck it as the cost of parts alone is coming up to more expensive before assembly by 500 usd or so.

So thats 500usd more for a set of tomei rods included in parts alone.

Im assuming that Nissan has a greater mark up on parts then on a complete whole sub assembly unit.

never the less i wont need to check much accept check that they have cleaned the block correctly that means stripping the motor.

Then checking the clearances correct on mains and big ends etc .

Reason i say this is because there has been a number of people who have bought complete engines from Nissan and checked the clearances etc and found problems, as well as with the R type rebuilt blocks that also have had loads of issues including the engine i bought from a company called Flatwell racing, they supplied me a engine rebuilt from nissan and it was a dud.

So be carefull out there .

I have a nismo head gasket already are these no good 1.2mm?

I have a extended sump that also holds about 7.8 litres of oil i dont know if this is enough or not ?

What is the average sump extension size ?

Hope to hear back from you thanks for the advise Cheers

Adam

Ps the cams i had were being used on standard valve springs .

they are 264 degree cams intake and exhaust .

Hello, just a small update was looking at my cams and went on the greddy trust website .

http://www.trust-power.com/overseas/ov_products.html?cate=6&item=152

This is a drop in cam shaft and happens to be the cam shafts that i have model 13526204

Seems that i dont need uprated valve springs .

So im lucky on this one :)

will keep you guys updated when i get the short block assembly have to save up for it tough one .

Thanks for that heads up had me thinking there quite a bit.

lol this ones for keeping close to stock.

The beast will come in the form of a gtr32 possibly as i dont see the point in modifying this clean car lol.

It will be a weekend cruiser and some times a day cruiser.

But i do want to make horse power and im seriously thinking of going for a rb30dett sounds exciting but that will come later.

thanks for the help will post again soon once i have the ever so big lump of cash for the short block assembly.

Hello,

Just needed to ask, i have the crank and the grading on the top says BBBBBB and the bottom figures for grading are 0000000 can any one confirm why the top grading marks are no more numbers but letters ?

Is this a more recent update on the cranks and we dont have the new enough engine manual for it ?

    • And if you want more power, more reliably, and cheaper, go get the Aussie RB... The 4L Barra and put that in instead.
    • No cats will keep discolouring the rear bar. Sends white paint a weird yellow stain. Cut and polish normally gets it out, but you'll be doing that every fortnight I found.
    • Both heads will be equally reliable or unreliable depending on what you do to them.  Stock the RB26 head will flow more. You have access to the stock intake ITB manifold on the RB26 cheaply which flows really well(1000hp+).   Arguably more aftermarket support for RB26, though in Aus we love our RB30 SOHC heads too.    The only downsides to the RB26 head is if you have a VL commodore and want to keep the SOHC look.  Where you may have an issue is drilling out the rb30 block for the bigger head studs but if you are building a big power motor you'd probably put bigger studs on the SOHC head too.  This is just about finding a good machine shop, sometimes easier said than done.  RB30 head worked can make big power just like a Rb26 head, so really it actually more comes down to what your preference is for your car.  People now even making billet versions of both.
    • 2630s work perfectly well. There is something to be said for just using the 30 head, as it saves all the pain of the conversion, still makes tons of power, still sounds cool, etc etc. 2630 will obviously make more power again, but the differences are not stupidly big. It really depends on whether you're racing for sheep stations or not. If it's dead serious, then it's a 26 head. If it's just for fun, it could go either way. But the 26 head and the effort to get it set up, etc etc, is part of the fun.
    • I've been building a 26/30 for a few years now. I've had the head built with all the good stuff. I had a 32 gtr but blew it up and yes its all going into a vl but im looking for some advice from some RB nuts on pros and cons on putting a 26 head on a 30 bottom end is it worth it Works are as follows Head -Extensive porting 1mm oversized supertech valves Supertech double springs Supertech valve guides Supertech titanium retainers Tomei solid lifters Tomei 270 x 10.25 cams Head drain Bottom end series 2 rb30 block Cp ceramic coated pistons Eagle rods Romac balancer Oil restrictions  O ringed blah blah spent a fortune And will get a girdle because the 30s arent used to handling that much rpm Nitto billet oil pump Hypertune plenum 6boost mani Refurbed astra pump thats the cover for it in the boot I did have a precision 6262 but sold it because drag car life. Currently building the ass end full 4 link floater rear end with a 2 speed  But the dilemma i have is my mate rekens I should just stick with the 30 head for reliability. Has any one had any issues with mounting the 26 head ie compression blowing gaskets etc. Just looking for some advice from people who have gone down this route. Here's some photos. Blew the oil pump in the gtr and decided to rip the motor out at the time and do a full build only to find it had been a repairable write off so went down this path.
