Hi,

Through i throw this up, to get some input from fellow gtr racers.

i recently had my turbo fail, due to my greddy air filter.

The Greddy Filter is the design the following way

Outside Mesh

The Filter

Filter Holder (mines the broken plastic holders)

Broken Plastic holders

Where the broken bits should be

What has happen is the plastic arms which are used to hold the filter in place (in the outside mesh), have broken off and were sucked into turbo number 1, damaging the turbo wheel

Now i run the greddy filter as im using a greddy hard piping kit. The size of the greddy filter is small which is ideal because the space available is very small for me, the greddy filter just fit (in fact they touch the windscreen washer bottle).

Now i am alittle bit worry about using the greddy filters again as i do not wish to rebuild my turbos again (this is the 2nd time within the space of less than 6months). I would ideally like to go back to running an airbox (was previous using an ARC box with the std piping) however the ARC box will not fit with the greddy piping kit.

So i need a filter which is smallist in size and has the flange to bolt onto the std afm (running HKS AFMless pipe which have the afm flange on the filter side)

What would people recommended i use/do?

Cheers

Not a lot of pods will fit and no air box will fit with your pipes.

HKS Pods may fit but the diameter might be too big.

Basically your only options would be to use the greddy filters or apexi. The apex filters wont fit with the HKS Maf housings since

the apexi pods are about 120mm long

There are 2 filters you can use, the standard dia 160mm or the smaller 140mm. 160mm will be touch and go, 140mm will

fit easily. In addition to that no one makes a 140mm "copy" so you are pretty much 100% going to get genuine no matter

where you order from.

The apexi pods will bolt up to a z32 maf housing, but the ones you have are too long. You will need to cut them shorter

or just sell them and buy shorter adaptors which are about $30 per pair or like $40 ea + shipping for genuine apexi.

Im in a similar situation to you wanting to replace because I still have the stock AFM's there. Basically im ready to pull the

trigger on the 140mm filters and china spec adaptors, but if you want to sell your filter base (black rubber bit with z32 bolt pattern)

I would be keen if you just gonna bin them.

I'd go with airbox & snorkel, at the moment I am using a pair of 3A Racing air filters based upon this magazine benchmark of well-known filters: http://www.australianauto.com.au/HTML/Images/Air%20Filter%20Shoot%20Out.pdf

The 3A filters will fit on to HKS adaptors if you have them already like I did.

ok first things first.

if it's a track car remove the washer bottle. it's not needed. just takes up space and adds weight right up the front of the car. once gone you also have room for a CAI if wanted.

no way will you fit apexi pods in place with the greddy piping and washer bottle.

also, as to why your's failed, I'd say they were crushed. like damanged in transit or damaged during install or if second hand possibly damaged by the previous owner. that's most likely why the plastic cracked and broke. so many people have used them on track cars without issue.

best choice for replacement:

apexi pods. good filter very reliable but quite long. will be tough to fit but possible.

K+N pods. fantastic filters and also reliable and easily cleanable. come in many sizes so you might be able to get small ones to suit.

or built custom box which will be tough to do nicely.

thanks beer baron, yeah the failure was my fault; in that i bought the piping kit second hand and didnt check the filter before isntalling them.

It was running fine for 2-3months but then the car was left for 3months (was on holiday), on my 1st drive and in less than 5mins the filter had destory itself and my turbo.

Washer bottle needs to stay as it still hold rego to get me to and from the track and workshop. however i might look at something smaller.

I think i might just go greddy filter again as if this isn't a common problem, then i should be ok.

I reckon something like someone left something under the bonnet and then closed the bonnet on the filters, crushing them and fracturing the plastic inside. the way they all cracked off like that screams damage to me.

I've personally run the trust kit on a few of my cars. and currently have the HKS kit on one and never had either type fail. it will almost certainly be ok with new filters.

there is one other thing you could/should do. add some mesh to your afm replacement adapter. that way if it happens again the bits of plastic aint going anyway. could even just find someone with a broken afm and rob the mesh off it? cause if you'd had afms this wouldn't have been a problem as they have 2 layers of quite fine mesh to stop big stuff like that getting into the turbo (well and the afm for that matter).

Will give the mesh idea a go!

My filter sit high for some reason so the bonnet does touch them.. so maybe the constant opening and closing didn't help aswell, might need to address that issue before i bolt the turbo back on

definitely fix that issue. you could be able to reposition them a bit. just undo all the hose clamps and loosen the silicone joiners so you can swivel them in place etc.

  • 1 month later...

yeah i've never seen it happen before. plus, if you have AFMS it can't happen as those big plastic bits would get trapped by the mesh on the afms. also, you can see this definitely was caused by the filter being crushed which snapped off the plastic arms. but if you are really worried I can show you how to replace the greddy filters with apexi filters. bit of stuffing around though and a tight fit but I like them.
