Hi Guys,

As someone who does a lot of driving I am constantly amazed at the amount of "P" platers that I see driving Skylines, Evos, WRX's and V8 Commodore and Falcons.

My son is off his greens but my twin girls have 2 years to go so I was wondering are these guys taking risks or are they able to get exceptions that easy. Each day I would see 3-4.

I'm interested to find out how many "P" platers here drive such cars.

exemptions are hard to get and the laws were put in place in 2007 so most of the people who got their p's before than would have their fulls by now. So all these guys dont give a shit or somehwo got an exemption

I'm amazed at the volume and more so that the parents don't give a toss either. The consequences could be horrendous ...............

My mate has had a VL turbo, S13 turbo, 180SX turbo, SSS supercharged, SSS turbo and a 5L Calais and has been caught driving all of them. Was let off every time, no fine, no loss of licence.

I see it a fair bit on the Central coast and Newcastle too, red p's SS commodore etc. To be honest though, i really think it doesnt make too much of a difference. I mean the awd turbo's scare me a little with the in experienced drivers because you can give them such a hard time before you 'feel like your going fast'. Its hard to say what i mean over the internet, but i think the speeds you can do in these wrx's/evo's etc without feeling like you are flogging it is a bit different to the regular v8 falcodore or turbo skyline which is heavier and tail happy.

The only reason i feel like i can say this is because i was one of these complete idiots on my red p's. I did completely stupid things on a daily basis and risked everyones lives in my car and passing motorists/pedestrians. All while driving a v6 commodore which handled and stopped like shit. When i bought my ss commodore on my green p's (@18) I had a completely different respect for the vehicle and how it handled, hence i drove much more sensibly- all the while having loads more power. Maybe it was just growing up a little more, but i dont think so. I just think having the slug v6 made me feel like i could man handle the thing all over the road. My 2 cents.

It was actually July 2005 when it came in. I do a lot of weekday driving and don't see it very often. But I don't do any weekend or night time driving, that's when most of the crazies are out.

Yes but the vehicle can only be impounded if you're doing something stupid ie street racing/burnouts etc, Not for driving a turbo car. Pretty much if you keep the car looking standard, don't drive around any hotspots and dont drive like a complete wanker you will be fine.

Even if you will be "fine" By not driving like an idiot Keeping it stock looking or avoiding hot spots, An Import Or V8 is always going to attract more attention then a Hyundai.

The lack of Training and understanding of the Roads (the Rules And Users) will catch us teenagers off guard sooner or later, And it will have it's consequences, Either killing ourselves or others.

I Am a Red P-Plater and I Drive A N/A R33 And I completely understand why the Government introduced these rules. There is no doubt in my Mind if I tempted myself and was a complete dick head and bought A Turbo'd/V8 Vehicle my inexperience (even tho I Do Drift nights at eastern creek) I Would of been Dead By now, not because of my driving, Because there's always one night where you give it that little go, And having that extra power would not end up well.

I stopped reading your post there. Everyone seems to know a mates cousins, friends, uncles nephew who has been driving their whole P's in a turbo vehicle.

Cops being lenient and letting people off? I don’t know where you guys are from but NSW is not like that the slightest. I personally know of people driving their family C200 Kompressors not having any idea that their supercharged and losing their licence for it for 3 months. Heck ive even heard of people losing it for driving bloody 350z’s due to them being on the banned list.

Its just not worth it doing especially in an import., you will get pulled over and you will lose your licence.

These are the people that think they're above the law and invincible, and they're the ones that make road toll statistics, coupled with possibly taking out a new family.

i've seen this to and i've always wondered how thay get away with it and why thay take the risk, the only conclusion i've managed to come to is thay like beingf**kedinthearse.

seriously though it make's me really depressed that some people cannot see what affect breaking the law has on themself let alone what affect it has on everyone else.

Robust conversations are all well and good but I think we do need to put things into perspective. As I asked in on of my earlier post...... What about the parents?

I would NEVER dream of allowing my kids to drive a restricted car purely because of the potential consequences.

I find it hard to believe that a cop will let anyone off because if that "P" plater raps him or herself around a pole and it's proven that a cop didn't do anything then they are in HUGE trouble.

    • Hey y'all, I have a completely stock 1991 R32 GTR, yesterday I took my car out and went for about a thirty minute drive. It was fine on the way there but when returning home I think the car might have gone into a limp mode. I was cruising in 5th gear around 130km/h, the hicas light came on and there was a significant loss of power. About a minute later I hear a thump, the car starts driving normal again and is fine the rest of the drive back. This is the second time its happened, same as now it was fine on the trip there. On the way back it had the hicas light on but that time I would feel the power going in and out before hearing the same thump and it being fine.  I have no idea idea what causing this, but if anyone has any ideas it would be great as a start chasing the cause of this. Also I can provide more details if needed. Thank you
    • When sanding across a convex panel, you need to sand, as much as possible, at right angles to the curve. If the panel is compound convex curved (ie curved in both directions) then you are SOL and have to use "craftsmanship" to get it right.

    • This sounds like me. And then why I leave shit that I had previously hobbled together broken. Lately I've changed strategies to "If I don't want to justify the money on decent stuff, I'm not going to justify hobbling it together". I'm still for DIY, but DIY it properly is more my thing. However, I am terrible on not setting up backups still... Which reminds me, I need to go backup some of my work VM machines... Oh, it's also why I've become a lover of building things into Docker Containers... Also, these days, my steep learning curves are spent with work related stuff, and on very varied projects, that my want to do other random projects like build a dashboard for my own car has dwindled away to "I just want the car running", which is my current PITA, as I'm getting the Landcruiser usable again, and it has just been non-stop the past 6 to 8 weeks of buying parts, and working on it. Oh, and tools that are meant to be fit for purpose... And they break, because 25 year old 4WD decides it's stronger... But by the time I have it ready to roll back out the drive way, nearly all the stuff in it will have been touched and serviced, so the damn thing better give me NO FREAKING ISSUES, for at least the next 50,000KMs! Just redone whole front of the motor, and resealed the up top stuff, replaced a bunch of things getting perished, new timing belt done, water pump, lower timing cover (Toyota diesel engine runs timing GEARS for the bottom half the motor, and a timing belt from halfway up to the top), new harmonic balancer, fix up the alternator, new thermostat, full swivel hub rebuild, new bearings and seals front and back, steering box rebuild, new battery, and today, it turns out a rear shock has let go, so four new shocks are about to go on order, and that will leave me with after the next run of work, to see if I need to order just a brake caliper re-seal, or if I'll need new pistons in them too. Oh, and I'll finish welding in the new floor sheet metal shortly too. Presently I just want it finished already... But once all the above is done, I still need to fully service diffs, gearbox, transfer, and motor. Then flush and bleed the clutch, and flush and bleed the brakes. But enough about our waffle, back to Duncan's heat problems... I think for Duncan he just gets a thermoswitch, and a manual switch to run some water misters. Thermo so it's only on above certain temps, and the manual switch so it can be turned off even if it is above certain temperatures. IE, switch on for "I'm now on track", then it doesn't need any "smart" computers that might try and do things wrong. And switch the thing off completely on the cool down lap, so when he stops in pits, there's not even a possibility of it dripping any water out to get him in trouble.
