sorry if i offended you, because i didnt intend to do that. I was just highlighting somethig you said as it seems to be a reacurring theme with L platers attitudes towards the 120 hour rule. Imo every one should do the 120 hours. To me, the more you drive, the higher chance you will encounter and experiance a range of situations, conditions (rain, fog, night) and roads (country, suburban, highways, windy, busy main roads)

For example, around mid way through my l's, I was entering the M5 at Beverly hills east bound. (anyone who knows what im talking about will know this is a busy entrance to the M5) Anyway there was a BMW SUV in front of me, and upon entering the highway from the ramp he changed lanes onto the highway without looking, it cut off a Semi tralier (the double carraige truck???). the truck then had to slam on its breaks, as its tail wrapped sideways and almost rolled while the tyres smoked up the highway. As the smoke cleared i drove on and because of this experiance i will always make sure to be extra careful when entering highways especially with trucks as they arre so heavy and take a long time to stop.

basically, my point is, if you drive around for 20 hours with your parents around the local area. your not going to witness or experiance anything realistic. you will take the road for granted and think your invinsible and that nothing will go wrong. where as if you drive the 120 hours covering rainy, night, foggy caking things such as onditions driving on all types of roads, the chances are you will gain greater experiance and maybe even witness things that will alter your behaviour, for the better

However much the 120 hours can help a driver gain experiance, taking driver deffensive courses will help even more.

non taken mate, i see your point, And to add to your comment regarding the trucks, to be honest i never understood this carfull driving around trucks ect, untill the last year i have had to drive one to and from work each day and i can tell you how much it has made me be conciderate of other trucks on the road when im in a sedan now. the braking on these trucks are shocking and with a heavy load they just lock up. People cuttin gme off ect have no idea how bad it could end if im not paying 110% full attention to the idiots on the road.

And NEVER be next to a truck when they are turining from the middle lane, you will get side swiped as the turn there back carrage will enter the far left lane,

WOW, this got out of hand real quick.

I wasn't saying i have immunity or anything special, clearly people need to read and then not make assumptions.

At the end of the day it's the choice you, (OP), make towards what vehicle you drive.

A note to the people posting 'Ah his dad's a cop its a conflict of interest etc'. I am fully aware of this, but really have a look around at the idiot driving these days with low performance vehicles (Excel, Commodore). i understand it is illegal, but if i was a 'hoon' driver i it wouldnt matter what car i had, id still manage to make it do something illegal, and we can see these examples all over the news =(

I am definately not saying i have immunity or anything BS like that, my point was how i made the decision on my Skyline and passing this message on to those who would be interested (the OP)

I'm sure im not the only p plater out there doing something they aren't supposed to be doing.

Cheers.

Your right, your definitely not the only one, it really amazes me but a person i apparently know drives his vl turbo around bov going off like a steam engine with his p-plates on. He has no exemption and no excuse and im not sure if he's been pulled over but really just blatent stupidity all to look sick for the chicks. It is your decision in the end its good to hear your not swinging bangers every chance you get but as long as you understand the risk you take as im sure you know the police wont care!

In conjunction with the inaddequate driver training available from the government, Rta licensing, testing should test on more than driving know how, rules and parking/driving test which lets be honest as a nervous 17yr old i got 106 points out of 100 points so yeah you do that math.

My Dad had an affiliation with the BMW group, did a whole bunch of track days, owned a restored E36 M3, first thing as soon as he taught me some car control and how to drive offensively rather than defensively he enrolled me in a weekend advanced driver course for BMW.

Did the hot lap in a M3 which was Amazing! at the time lol :P now i have a gtr probablly not so good but still a great day.

The things i picked up from that day whilst simple at the time when i was a young driver have to this day saved my skin in accidents more than 2 times. worth it!

the new rules governing V8's and turbos are very harsh considering some of the cars you can drive legally are far worse. i have seen P platers in F250's trying to park them parralel and all sorts of crap, there needs to be a more moderated *fine line* in regards to car types and exclusions. I am also not a fan of the exemption rule that is ridiculous.

I feel the L plate car restrictions should be introduced also. noted a SRT Dodge viper in north sydney on L plates. sorry but thats fking stupid!

WE need greater restrictions across the board or none at all! another thing to possibly look at in terms of licensing is the overseas element who come over with a international license and cant drive. (guy i know just about killed us cause he was from thailand and assured us all he could drive, spent the trip driving from the passenger seat as i had been drinking).

The government needs to compensate or work further with the *youth* in driver programs, driver skills, control, car handling, if it wants to have harsh limits and restrictions for the younger aged.

I missed all the restrictions for P's and am happy however i also learnt to drive from a very young age in the country and went through and did a few driver courses to improove myself.

As far as im aware, if someone was on their green P's b44 the restrictions came in u can drive the V8 n Turbo cars... some ppl (n i know 2 of them) have been on their green P's since the new regs have come in

That would be over 4.5 years ago!

Hey,

I live in WA and am planning on coming over to either sydney or melbourne to finish my studies.

I have a r33 Gtst and was wondering if i bring my car over and keep it registered to WA and keep my WA license will this allow me to drive it?

Thanks

  • 4 weeks later...

Im 23 now and have had two turbocharged cars on my p's, a manual legnum which made a healthy 215 awkw and a gtir powered n14 SSS with a gt2871r....made plenty of power,

I've never had an accident in either of those cars, both we're modified to be all rounders, suspension and brakes were awesome on both.

I was pulled over once in the legnum and tbh the highway officer had no clue...breath tested me and let me go. Both cars were modified pretty low key- no crazy fitment, no atmo bovs, both had black fmics etc etc.

I know alot of idiots that will drive stupidly no matter what they're in, but the point I'm trying to make is that there ARE sensible late teens on p's driving these cars.my parents never had a drama with me driving them, I payed my $$ and got my kicks at eastern creek. Driver attitude is what kills people, without a driver the car is a lump of fairly safe metal.

I drive a skyline turbo and just recently

Got my ps just the love of having power under your foot I gues is worth taking the risk

Why is it for sale then?

Wow, that's just plain stupid... :domokun:

It is in no way worth the risk. Just a drive down to maccas for lunch can lead to a 6 month suspension and a 1 year extra wait (suspension + driving hours requirement) until you can legally drive turbos...

    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve.
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
