You can still control timing without stuffing around with the cam to make a motor safe, I have no idea why you would do that.

The second guy sounds more like he is suggesting retarding the intake cam to increase torque in the lower rev ranges with the expense of top end, that in itself might be a good idea depending on what you want but you can still do that an have the motor unsafe (too much timing, too lean, on the knife edge of detonation, too hot etc)

Basically, trust your tuner, hes probably done a lot more cars for a lot longer then keyboard tuners on here

haha, the previous quote just aletred me to this comment. So how many have you built? Clearly the one GTR you owned that you probably paid a workshop to build for you makes you an expert does it lol

Please correct me if i am wrong though as i like being proven wrong.

You and I both know that if the thing blows up tomorrow, that your in a pretty good financial position to get it fixed anyhow thumbsup.gif

What a shit attitude to have, you can afford to fix it so lets go and f**k it up. Not your exact words but thats what your implying. With an attitude like that you dont deserve to own a GTR in my eyes

Should my mate go out and crash his Superleggera or blow the motor up just because he can afford to fix it. Hell no. Why someone would want to damage something just because they can afford to fix it is beyond me.

Are you really that f**kin stupid...?

Don't believe I was saying that he is filthy rich and should blow his car up for the sake of it!

I was implying that working in a coal mine and receiving $150,000 a year plus Superannuation puts livewire in a better position to fix his car "if" anything goes wrong with it.

Unlike someone who maybe massively in debt just so that cam be a cool flamin mongrel with a GTR...

Keep ya dumb ass comments to yaself. Ya dumb ass.

I gave Jim A call this morning as he said to give him a call with feedback after driving it home and if I had any issues etc. I questioned him about the boost level and he said 1.15 bar is no issue at all and he has tuned between 70 and 80 R34 gtrs over the years without any issues so I think its fair to say he knows what he's doing. As for the dyno reading, Jim said his mainline dyno has twin retarders which is where the readout is lower than the actual power being made and he confirmed the car is making about 280kw. If he was going to bullshit I'd think things would be the other way round putting higher figures on paper to make it look good. At the end of the day I'm 100% happy and confident in the work done. The car has a lot more response, torque, better fuel economy and the car starts first turn of the key which it had troubles with before and for the price I was charged for fitting of the injectors, power fc, tune, oil change and filter, new spark plugs I couldn't ask for more.

He may have said GTR's in general but made it quite clear he has seen a lot of R34's running stock turbos at this level with no issues. As someone earlier in the thread said... he's been running 1.2 bar for 6/7 years with no issues. If something happens, it happens. You don't play with cars and modify them if you don't realise there's risk. I'm happy with it in more than just the power increase. It's a better car now in general.

I haven't ignored any advice, hence calling and asking the tuner himself about the issues people have brought up on here which I am greatful for. But the tuners advice is the advice I will be taking as he knows the car better than anyone on here, has seen, tuned and worked on more cars than anyone who's commented on here as he does it for a living and has been for years. I could have ignored any advice but didn't. I called to double check and he has reassured me.

There doesnt need to be a risk though.... if your building a race car and want everything out of it then yes, you will run it closer to the edge, but even then there should be no real risk of hurting the drive line.

If you need to risk something to get somewhere/something or achieve your goals, then it hasnt been built properly or your simply asking to much from it.

I built an engine for my car and my intention was to have the car as a streeter/weekend drag racer. I wanted abot 700hp and that was achieved 5+ years ago.. I didnt build an engine with stock rods and pistons because i have seen them hold this power level before, its a risk they wont, so i built it accordingly. I have seen stock motors with huge ass turbo's making 700hp but for how long....

Clearly, as your mate has pointed out, you have the cash flow to build it properly so why would you take the risk in hurting more than just a turbo charger. Its well documented that some turbo are luckier than others, but that also carries through to the engine when the turbo fails. The engine will probably go for another 10 years if its looked after. Get some -5's and swap them over and it will make 300+ with the support mods you alreayd have. It will do that day in day out and you will never have to worry about a turbo failure due to a wheel falling off.

You may have one of those lucky pairs of turbos that just dont let go, but you might also not and i assure you that you will kick yourself if one of them lets go and it takes your engine with it

has seen, tuned and worked on more cars than anyone who's commented on here as he does it for a living and has been for years.

Are you sure about that lol There isnt only one GTR mechanic in Sydney mate, lots of us on here have done it for a living

After reading all three pages I have one question;

I was implying that working in a coal mine and receiving $150,000 a year plus Superannuation puts livewire in a better position to fix his car "if" anything goes wrong with it.

Where does when get one of these coal mining jobs!! :)

Lots of stories about blown turbos = blown motors. I keep my 32 to 1 bar (should probably even be lower).

Better yet just go the -9 route if you can.

get an engineering degree and some experience, or become a sparky and work in one, I'm sure you could get there after a couple of years.

Or leave high-school in year 10 and wing it and oneday ya end up driving 400ton mining trucks and 1200ton diggers. With no brain and therefore no qualifications!

hehe ye, just drive a truck and you'll be close without any paperwork at all!

2 years

drive truck

PROFIT?

I questioned him about the boost level asnd he aid 1.15 bar is no issue ... he has tuned between 70 and 80 R34 gtrs over the years

He may have said GTR's in general but made it quite clear he has seen a lot of R34's running stock turbos at this level with no issues.

Well "in general" or "70-80"? Chinese whispers again!

Or leave high-school in year 10 and wing it and oneday ya end up driving 400ton mining trucks and 1200ton diggers. With no brain and therefore no qualifications!

yeah f**k driving trucks though, would be extremely boring and unsatisfying.

Ohhh dear. I think this will be the last time I post anything about performance etc on here or try to give someone's work a wrap. I'm The first to admit I don't know everything about the car therefore ask questions and leave it in the hands of the people who do. I simply thought I'd share my experience and thoughts of the work Dart performed and I'm happy as I'm sure many others are too including the guys at just jap who use Dart for they're cars and recommend them to they're customers which I think is a clear sign of confidence in them. Yes, maybe there are more people on here that work on/tune cars for a living which may explain why a lot of people like to question the work of others/bag them out. Some of yous may find it amusing to read etc and I'm glad I could provide you some entertainment and thanks for the input. And as for having a good income... yes we do get paid well for what we do but the more you earn the more you spend, trust me lol. I live week by week at the moment! Haha.

    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
    • Some of them keep working fine. 9 out of 10 of them end up causing an absolute misery bleeding the system and get thrown on the workshop floor in a tantrum and never thought about again because they were never really needed and just added crap to the car that we could have done without. Same-same with HICAS, A-LSD, and various other stupidities that over eager 10x engineers thought we had to have.
    • Not required but appreciated. Super Coppermix Twin even the non-competition model feels like the pedal is noticeably heavier than stock which was pretty well judged IMO. I'll be swapping in the Nismo operating cylinder soon to see how that feels.  Personally I haven't felt anything that justifies replacing the damping loop, at least compared to more modern stuff where the clutch delay valve is actually quite noticeable.
