Mmm , no I don't think LS engines are what you'd call MATEE or more awesome than everyone else . The punch is mainly in the capacity and for its capacity aluminimum makes the block and heads relatively light . Some credit has to go to its EFI and ignition systems because these add a lot of refinement to any engine .

The thing is that for a six litre engine they are hardly the bees knees and I think locally this is because Commode Door drive lines and body shells aren't the same as some USDM cars .

There was actually an engine option in the US that the Yanks couldn't stomach and it had double over head cam lids on each bank . From memory Lotus did the heads but not sure ATM . Anyhow it revved and made good power but the Americans avoided them because it didn't spin the wheels at starter motor revs .

Anyway I call LS engine Ford 9 Inch diff syndrome , not high tech or good quality materials - just big and lots of .

IMO the REAL issue is that most manufacturers slap together a big heavy car to throw a V8 at and then you suffer the mid size "performance truck" issues . If they hook up they go in a straight line but fail dismally one you encounter bends and twists . The big lurid slides/drift wank business is anything but fast though it does impress the tyre screech and smoke kiddys .

Most people I know wouldn't call a Commodore agile or want to push them hard around twisty windy roads . Too big too heavy and don't want to stop or change direction because of it .

Multiu cam multi valve heads are about lots of valve/breathing area into compact efficient combustion chambers . You cannot replicate with two valves what you can do with four and buckets/push rods/rockers do not constitute a high performance valve train in my book . Show me a current F1 engine with pushrods or two valves per cylinder or big open chambers .

Yeah but end of the day they out perform an RB in everyway, sure it isn't as impressive from an engineering standpoint due to it being pushrod and 6 (thats a f**kload) litres. However it weighs less, makes more torque, power, and also more average power.

How can you not want one?

Exactly, its efficiency in terms of the amount of performance you get out of ahunk of metal which has can be made to fit in a lot of places fairly easily and weighs less than many things with the same or less performance.

But I think the big question arising here is power on a budget vs performance on a budget cause they are 2 difeerent ball games really..While an LS as an engine will make good solid power effortlessly everywhere fairly cheaply, making a car that can harness the power is costly in terms of tyre wear brakes etc etc.To the point that it will be quite easily outperformed on track by something as little as a honda that was built for half the price and will last twice as long.. Actually for a budget NA performerance engine something of the vtec variety would probably be my choice..the Lotus with the K20a look like so much fun..

K20A Civics are completely insane, and a lot cheaper base than a Lotus haha.

One of the first US time attacks (EVOs, GTRs etc included) was dominated by an EG Civic with a fairly mild K20A in it :) Even a EuroR H22A in a Civic actually, they aren't far off K20As but with more torque and way cheaper... I've actually been pondering building myself something along those lines for quite some time.

Last night I thought about the combination of my said LS1 and my said R154 in the S14...

I then realised its a 1200ish kg car and a stock LS1 will be pretty average, while a good LS1 will be way too much. I then pondered further and realised power is one thing, but delivery is KING. The poor little SR still has a place in that car, I will push it to 240ish rwkw and have something that has power everywhere you need it, no power where you dont want it, and about as much power as I could realistically put to the ground (in more senses than traction, very much application specific).

As cool as it would be, I'm with Disco in saying, no thank you.

I think the two comments are sepparate from eachother. Building an EG civic to dominate a track with a B series motor costs next to nothing. Have been there, have done that, it was faster than my modified R32 in a straight line and obliterated it around a track.

dont hear much about hondas big little victories these days though, most of their cars are too heavy now and everyone else is running turbos in bigger badder cars.. Im starting to wonder, is there a whole new scene out there I havent caught up with yet...or is the track day scene dying off somewhat with a new generation more concerned with luxuries and electronic gizmos than outright performance..I mean if I want a car to perform fisrt thing I do is rip out the airconditioning knowing i'm also helping the planet in the process... Which brings up another point, is it the threat we are destroying the planet curbing peoples enthusiasm towards the scene..

i see alot of mazda 3s kicking around and they look somewhat sporting but I dont really hear of any track weapons based on them, same goes for the MPS..although hondas new CRZ looks like it could be interesting. Maybe all the cool cars are coming out of europe now but I havent paid enough attention to know what they are. i dont know, but do you ever feel like theres a party somewhere and you werent invited,

Hmm gearbox just started to crunch going into 5th unless i do it really slow, might need to hold off on the overnight parts from japan until I know if im up for a new box or not.

Thoughts? Gonna try an oil change with that redline fluid and see if it helps, how much is an rb25 box anyway?

Crunching is just syncros, doesn't mean it will blow up, just that it is annoying to change. Outright torque and brutal gear changes are what kills boxes, so don't go slapping gears and you should be fine at stock power levels.

I've gotten well over a year out of my 20 box with a 240kw rb25 behind it.

same can be said for capacity,5.7-6.0-6.2 LS motors are old tech, i have had the chance to drive all these engines and i don't know what you guys are talkingabout they make no where near the power down low my R32 GTR does and it makes alot more torque with very few modds and does it in a much bigger band, getting usable boost at 2000rpm and full boost at 2700rpm through to the 8000rpm redline with peak torque at 3900 and peak power at 6500. thats a power band of about 5500rpm

you want cheap easy power, enough to see clear of a V8 SS for $1000 then a zex NO2 kit a good dump pipe and front pipe would be hard to beat and if you can find then second hand you could do it for less then the $1000

So much fight here with Skylines vs Rotorarys vs V8 commodores...

So I shall bring in a new contender; the Falcon XR6T (& F6), over the years it have grown to be quiet a formidable opponent against the V8 commodores in traffic light grand prix & up until recently with FPV releasing its SC V8, the F6 was the faster car in Ford's line up, beating the old Ford V8.

What's everybody's option of it? I'm thinking of buying one (older F6 or a current gen XR6T) as my next car & do the usual mods to it (most say you can get 300rwkw fairly easily with just bolt ons & flash tune).

On one of my trips to Albany I was following behind a XR6T and that thing just goes, everytime he pulls out to overtake some snail in Camrys/caravan/road train.

Yehhh they are ok. Similar story to the V8 Commodores though, their engines make bags of power/torque and yet they have to cart this heavy shell of a car around. My mate has an F6 Typhoon making 380rwhp, best he has managed to run at the drags is a 13.6. Given he isn't a pro drag racer, but he isn't the worst driver in the world either. He could maybe see a 13-flat if he got everything perfect, but he hasn't managed yet.

    • Because people who want that are buying euros. The people with the money to buy the aftermarket heads and blocks aren’t interested in efficiency or making -7 power, they’re making well over 1,000hp and pretty much only drive them at full throttle  best way to way make money is know your customer base and what they want and don’t spend money making things they don’t want. 
    • It's not, but it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity regardless. For example, what if the cylinder head was redesigned to fit a GDI fuel system? It's worth like two full points of compression ratio when looking at modern GDI turbo vs PFI turbo. I'm pretty reliably surprised at how much less turbo it takes to make similar power out of a modern engine vs something like an RB26. Something with roughly the same dimensions as a -7 on an S55 is making absolutely silly power numbers compared to an RB26. I know there's a ton of power loss from things like high tension rings, high viscosity oil, clutch fan, AWD standby loss, etc but it's something like 700 whp in an F80 M3 vs 400 whp in an R33 GTR. The stock TF035HL4W turbos in an F80 M3 are really rather dinky little things and that's enough to get 400 whp at 18 psi. This just seems unwise no? I thought the general approach is if you aren't knock limited the MFB50 should be held constant through the RPM range. So more timing with RPM, but less timing with more cylinder filling. A VE-based table should accordingly inverse the VE curve of the engine.
    • I've seen tunes from big name workshops with cars making in excess of 700kW and one thing that stood out to me, is that noone is bothering with torque management. Everyone is throwing in as much timing as the motor can take for a pull. Sure that yields pretty numbers on a dyno, but it's not keeping these motors together for more than a few squirts down the straight without blowing coolant or head gaskets. If tuners, paid a bit more attention and took timing out in the mid range, managed boost a bit better, you'll probably see less motors grenading. Not to name names, or anything like that, but I've seen a tune, from a pretty wild GT-R from a big name tuner and I was but perplexed on the amount of timing jammed into it. You would have expected a quite a bit less timing at peak torque versus near the limiter, but there was literally 3 degrees of difference. Sure you want to make as much as possible throughout the RPM range, but why? At the expense of blowing motors? Anyhow I think we've gone off topic enough once again lol.
    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power
