My wife just bought herself a new car and whilst at the dealers they offered us a ?? package covering interior protection, paint protection, fabric protection for $600 each and anti-corrosion for $900 - we said no.

Comments made were that with the paint protection there is no need to wash, polish and wax the paint - all you should do is hose it down then dry with a chamois. Claimed that polishing and waxing harmed the paintwork. Anyone come acroos this or is just one of those after sale marketing hype sales pitches?

Also, we were told that this manufacturer (not Nissan) doesn't make dash mats at all (so needed the interior protection) because the cars have air bags !! That one really sealed up the "no thanks'.

Cheers, Al

Well my mate just got a new car, got paint protection, was told not to use cleaner, just water then chamois off.

Needless to say, 2 months later, the car looks absolutely terrible, paint is stuffed, marks and swirls all over it.

Dont listen to stupid car sales people, i think its just another way to get more money out of u. Make sure u clean a car the proper way.

Dirt isnt gonna lift off without some soap agent. Its basic physics :D

yeah.. its all a wank and been going on for 20 years in one form or another.. AFIAK "paint protection" is using a good quality wax.

for my mum's car she got suckers into buying like some colour coded extra strip along the front of the bonnet to stop stone chips. They charged her like an extra $500 or something for it!! and as far as i can see its just a heavy vinyl sticker the same colour so it looks invisible. For godsake, in 5 years if the whole bonnet needed a respray it would be less than $500.

yeah, definitely canyenero! or maybe caddilac man I'm thinking here.

There is proper paint protection companys out there, and heaps of dodgy ones

as well.I have a metalic silver gtr ,when i bought it a while ago, i went and got

paint protection on it, from a great place i know.Reason i got it was i've worked

in panel shops for years and silver cars where always getting roofs and bonetts

or boots resprayed from fadeing. For some reason silver just fades. The protection

i had put on was sprayed on and came with 15yr waranty. If i have any problems

with the paint at all they will fix it straight away. ITs been about 3 months and my

car looks spectacular. But as far as washing it goes you still have to wash it with

a good car wash. I use a product called zymol ,it was used on royal carriges, and

brings the car up like a mirror. The thing with the paint protection is you shouldn't

have to cut or polish it ,just wash it with something decent.then i just chamio it

and as i said it looks like a mirror. The cost of it was only $350,and considering

that if any thing happens to my paint it is fixed ,i found it worth it.

Thanks for the replies and that's what I thought too. Use old fashioned tried techniques like washing and waxing it. The salesperson told us to use baby shampoo as car wash was too harsh - no more tears hey?

Anyone heard about the electric gizmo attached to the car to change the polarity so rust cannot form - that one was a good one.

Just gotta make sure now the old Meguiars get used with my own elbow grease - at least it is white so not so bad to keep clean.

I had all the prescripted "protection" from MING when I first bought the car and believe me its a waste of money. Except the sound deading and also rust proof.

As to dash mat.. its correct I pretty sure you cannot/should not put dash mat on air bag cars cause it actually causes problems. To look after your interior get window tinting, sunshade that covers the whole wind screen and try to keep the car in shade as much as possible. ;) This goes a long way.. You can also get some non-silicon based product interior treatment make sure they shine and good too. :(

Oh for the waxing get something that is clear coat safe.. I use meguares soft wash, they are awesome. :D

As to the electric anti rust.. I was checking that out too.. I started a thread not long ago and still cant decide on that either.. how much have you been qouted for it? :D

Yotis

We were quoted $895 for the eletric anti-rust thingy but it would have been free if we bought the other "protection packages" for $1,800 in total. I just can't see how it can work.

The sales person couldn't really explain how the paint protection worked, just showed this special coat on top of the clear coat.

I too use Meguiars for the Skyline so now I will have to share.

Cheers, Al

Hrmm. ok.. cause I got a quote from a 3M place at brissy and it was from memory for $300 or less and all that "device" has is two anodes and connects to the car battery(think that is what the person told me). Supposely instead of gettin rust occurring on whereever it is, it occurs on the anodes instead. Every so often you will have to clean up the anodes, but after a while you will need to replace these anodes. This is how I remembered the explanation, sorry I aint very good at remembering things word by word. :P

But 895? Geezez..

If the paint protection is from MING, then definitely dont bother cause when I had it for my last car the annual "service" is nothing more than just a re-apply or sound deading for me, even tho I have the protection works. (I just happen to be watchin them doing the "service" through the work shop window, quiet a few times). Just give the car a regular wash and once every 2 or 3 months give it a good polish (I used meguiars clear coat safe polish) and the other stuff I mentioned.. She'll be shiny and good for a while. :( Well. cept the annoying stone chips. :P

Well, my next "paint protection" will be ten coats of clear over the front half of the car - never gonna be able to stop the stone chips but at least I might be able to stop them getting through to the undercoat!

Otherwise I use Maguiars advise, give it a single coat of wax (not multiple coats). Doesn't take long to put one coat of wax on - better to put one coat on more frequently (every 6-8 weeks) than many coats every 6-12 months.

The electronic rust protectors do work in my experience. Yes, they're probably a big rip off (a mate had his installed for $2k!) and probably not much use for the majority of us... But if you live in or near a coastal area or are constantly driving in areas that will get dirt throughout the external areas of your car they can save quite a few $$$ in the long run. Some of the 4x4s I've seen/had have no rust where similarily driven cars from the same area look like swiss cheese...
