I'll start off by saying this is to vent.

I've always tried to park our families cars as well as I can. I know it's tough to reverse out of your driveway sometimes when idiots don't park close to the side walk, etc.

So it was to my disgust that I woke up today to find that our 4x4 had a smashed side mirror.

Now the funny thing is that when looked closer, it appeared that only the mirror lense was broken... no scratches on the actual side mirror cup... and the whole side mirror was folded in towards the door.

I've previously had issues with mongrels in the street damaging cars.... and I suspect this may be some intentional stuff.

So my question is: Am I thinking too much and it was just some punk with bad driving skills and no conscience? If not... what should I do to stop this? We've got a few cars in the family and some will inevitably have to live outside...

Security cameras. Had some break-ins on the street around my area a while back, plus we have a laneway right next to our house with randoms always walking past, so I installed 4 security cameras monitoring outside the house (namely down the driveway, looking down the street and most of the gardens). I've got 2 cars parked outside so I figure spending $600 on a camera kit to monitor is a better deterrent than just insurance on the cars. Also put in some flood lights with sensors that turn on when anyone approaches the cameras so it's easy to pick up anything that moves around.

Funnily enough too, I had some small rocks out the front that kept getting thrown around/disappearing, that stopped the day the cameras were installed. It's amazing how different people behave when they know they're being watched, especially when they know they're going to do something they shouldn't.

Failing that, a big dog in the backyard tends to keep others well away from the house. But if you can't park in your driveway and have to park on the street, there's very little you can do. Park on the grass? Park at a neighbours house if you can? Maybe swap around the cars occasionally. Best thing to do is make sure you have full insurance, you can't always be there to watch over things no matter what.

+1 for cameras. People egging my house stopped as soon as I installed them. Don't know how they even saw the cameras because they are kind of small. I picture some cowardly pricks looking around, all paranoid in case someone is watching them as they egg the house, then seeing cameras pointing at them and saying f*** this.

Put fake security signs outside: WARNING: YOUR ASS IS BEING WATCHED.And put in a couple of sensor lights that go on when someone approaches.

Ahh you're better off hardwiring security camera's.... the off the shelf jaycar/electronics store kits are ok quality wise, but a wireless frequency jammer will make short work of them Not every casual punk on the street will bring signal jamming equipment though... but I've used them when conducting penetration tests

I took a good look today after work and definitely the malicious as suspected... dead center hit and no damage anywhere else on the side mirror...

Bez: Not around the where you are mate but back at base in Caulfield (shocked as it USED to be a decent suburb)... I guess with school break on kids have nothing better to do.

I pray for their sake I don't catch one of these rats... Looking at installing some sensor lights and fake cameras outside to joint now.

yeh your probably right. but the kid trolling in my street is abit to retarded to have a jammer. he walks around with powerade in a brown paper bag to make it look like he's gangster.

Is this in the Hallam area? If so, I think I know who you're talking about.

And agree about hard-wiring the cameras, it's more secure to do it that way, it may be more work running cables but at least you know they will work no matter what. I did the install myself for all 4 cameras, only took a couple hours work so no biggy.

yep thats the area. and chances are thats the kid. little blue POS
