Good Nights Sleep

I have had many problems over the years getting a decent sleep. All the small things like exercise and no caffeine etc make next to no difference with me, however anything that i have ever been prescribed that does a good job of putting me off leaves me feeling sedated of a morning, which i hate. My main problem with sleeping is that i have something called restless legs syndrome, which essentially make me extremely fidgety and to be honest, very annoyed. I have spoken to the doctors a few times about this, and been recommended and prescribed a couple of different magnesium supplements. The first one was an over the counter supplement called magnesium asparate, and it did absolutely nothing. My doctor has now given me a different ,magnesium supplement which is via prescription called magnesium glycinate, and again its not working at all. I will be going to the doctor again soon to hopefully get something else that works!

Another thing, the restless legs runs in my family and my Mum has been taking a drug called reprieve for it. From my understanding its the same class of drug that treats parkinsons disease, and it works very well. I used it for a week or so until i bought it up with my doctor and it showed that it doesnt work well with my other medication.

I thought this might be a good place to get some advice, and maybe for others to share their experiences.

Temazepam. I can take a 10mg tablet for a 3 hour nap before a night shift and wake up feeling fine.

They don't seem to make me drowsy/trip out like has happened with Stilnox, and I've been able to stay awake after taking one as well. I think they just relax you once you're in bed trying to sleep, rather than actually knock you out.

Used to have Catapres as a kid although apparently it isn't often used for sleeping.

Now have a back injury & take mogadon (nitrazepam), endep & tramadol before bed & wake up feeling fine. However saying that, everyone's different & I would avoid relying on strong meds if you can help it.

At one stage I tried a herbal sleeping aid called Valerian. Didn't do a lot for me but had been on much stronger meds since a young age which probably didn't help...

Maybe give it a try if you haven't already?

Also, may sound stupid but have you tried the old warm milk/milo, etc?

My old ladys been drinking wierd tea lately (flavours like cranberry, raspberry & strawberry) & swears black & blue it's helping her sleep

I had problems sleeping, then I realized my bed was on a little bit of a lean. corrected that and now I get my 40 winks every night :)

Also I had some leftover diazipam from another prescription, that helped too.

I think i have been on that before with good results, however my doctor didnt want to keep me on it. Tbh i have had that many damn prescriptions over the last few years its hard to remember. I do know however that i have been on one medication that was strictly for sleeping, and it worked well, but my doctor was wanting it to be a short term thing, which im cool with.

I have tried valerian, and yeah didnt do much for me, if anything. And i also agree with avoiding the strong meds, im worried enough about the amount of prescription drugs i swallow each day, lol.

Im a bit pissed though to be honest, because when i got the magnesium glycinate, that it was a supplement with no side effects as such, everything else im looking at will probably be a bit more risky.

lol, no wonder, you were gripping in your sleep trying not to fall out! I too have some valium from a back injury, and yes it helps, alot. However i keep it just in case i really hurt my back again because it seems to be the only thing that even vaguely helps. Plus, i hear that its very addictive.

Thanks for the help guys.

Something as simple as phenergan 25 to 50mg (an antihistamine) at night does the trick for most people and you can buy it over the counter.

I'm a doctor but in no way take responsibility, please see your own doctor if you have concerns.

Hope that helps.

If one wants to go natural...

1) l-Tryptophan which is a precursor of Serotonin. It's that part of milk that makes people sleepy. But it only works if taken away from other amino acids (that would dilute the Tryptophan). Useful to prevent restless legs syndrome.

Brand Name = S.A.D. made by Dr Veras

Dose = Start with 1 level teaspoon in juice at least 2 hours after dinner ie 200mg > reduce over time

2) Melatonin which is usually produced in the pineal gland in the brain

Brand Name = Melatonin Lozenges 5mg obtained from Qld company called Golden Glow and made by Blue Roc

Dose = Start with say 3 lozenges under the tongue for 2 minutes before swallowing an hour before bed. > reduce over time

3) Valerian mentioned above

Brand Name = sorry > I'll have to look it up

Dose = sorry > I have to look it up

4) Bupleurum

Brand Name = Stressan made by Metagenics

Dose = 1 capsule a couple of hours before bed > increase if necessary to 2

5) Theanine

Brand Name = Ultra Theanine by Dr Veras

Dose = Start with 1x 200mg capsule a couple of hours before bed > increase if necessary

i have restless leg syndrome too but mine doesnt get out of control unless the temperature of my legs is different to my body. especially when my legs are colder than my body i get some serious kicks going. i dont have many probs in winter as im under the covers but in summer when im half under it can be a bit annoying.

routine is important for me. i sleep between 11-12 every night and wake up between 530-615. too much/little sleep wrecks me during the next day and makes me take longer to get to sleep. i also take no medication whatsoever, not even panadol.

as for getting to sleep quickly...throw a leg over :bunny: its in our DNA to sleep immediately after :P

Thanks heaps guys for the info, also good to know im not the only one i here with this rls bullshit.

Terry thanks for the list, i looked up the L-tryptophan as you said it may help with restless legs, but im a bit concerned with it crossing my other medication the wrong way, particularly with it being a precursor to serotonin. At this stage im just hoping to get into my doctor asap, which is proving difficult at the moment.

Again, cheers for the advice.

Nah but seriously, i find as long as i havent had caffeine and dont need to piss, i can get down and sleep pretty easily. which is good because i have had periods where i have been on 5-6 sources of caffeine a day and it makes me insomniac. phenergan is always good though.

weed

lol! Check out my user name, i have been there..whistling.gif

No to be honest, it did wonders in the short term for me, but i never saw it as a long term thing, and sure enough the effects of it started to wear off and it became useless. The current batch of medicine im on also started to work properly so i ditched the weed. Not too sure on the dates, but i think ive been about 3-4 months without it, and it was easy to quit for me. When i first smoked it actually did help slightly to relax me and sleep, but a few months of usage and it made no difference to my situation, and i was as twitchy and irritated as ever and still didnt sleep no matter how much i had.

Definitely going to look at phenergan though.

I recently found out I was vitamin D deficient. After taking very large vitamin d supplements, I've noticed my sleep has improved dramatically. Might be worth looking into as well?

Definitely going to look at phenergan though.

This will probably give you the worst groggiest hangover out of the lot, has a massive hal-life and will be there when you 'wake up' always makes me feel destroyed if I use it for allergies.

The truely best sleeping tablets are the short half-life ones, Temazepam, Zolpiclone, Zolpidem etc etc they make you go to sleep, get metabolised and then your body takes over with no ill effects in the morning. Valium, clonazepam and Nitrazepam have fairly big half-lives also, though clonazepam will leave you feeling like you've lost a fair few IQ points.

The problem with all of these are they are failry addictive over time, and if hooked can be dangerous to stop and require dose tapering over long periods to avoid withdrawal seizures etc etc

Saying that, my pick of the bunch for a short term trial would be the Zolpiclone (Imovane)as it's not a true benzo, so doesn't have half the problems, but still psychologically addictive through getting wiked awesome sleep that feels fulfilling.

These proved fantastic on our flight to the US, forced myself to sleep 3pm, woke up 7 hours later feeling great and ready to drive from LA to Vegas, no hangovers or anything with them.

Im pretty unfamiliar with most of those drugs, but valium has always left me totaled the next morning. Im hoping my doctor can get me sorted on my next visit, although i know from experience this is pretty damn optimistic lol. I am also hoping that i can find a solution without the serious drugs, again optimism, but hopefully it can be the case for me.

Yeah I got addicted to my Diazipam, shit got rough when I had to kick it. Lucky alcohol was there to save the day :)

Yeah, f**k mate, i have heard that is really rough, another reason im reluctant to use my valium.

Yeah VERY long half-life, the metabolite of Valium is active also so the effects keep going. People get hooked because the way it works in the brain is on the exact same receptors as alcohol, except there isn't any feeling of being sick as the dose goes up. So you get a nice alcohol buzz with no ill effects, no wonder it's so tasty......not as tasty as Xanax though :S
