Hi

i got the car 12 months ago and it had many mods already done

im worried that the way it is setup ill get a yellow sticker

i have a few questions

can you get a yellow sticker for

  1. having holes in the engine bay from factory pipe holes
  2. having a hard mounted pod filter with no air box
  3. having your coil packs showing
  4. having black smoke stains on your bumper
  5. having a after market ecu
  6. any aftermarket bov that is plumbed

the engine use to be chromed and shiny now is painted mat black and not blue silicon joins to give its stealth look

1. no, as long as factory made

2. no but must have a minimum of 2 brackets holding it on, and must be secure

3, not sure but dont think so

4. good indication that car not stock. don't be lazy and wash it.

5 yes. a big yes. if hidden well and don't give them a reason to look, shouldnt be a problem though

6 as long as it is recirculating it should be ok

  1. having holes in the engine bay from factory pipe holes: No, unless you removed something which was a safety feature of the car lol.
  2. having a hard mounted pod filter with no air box: Some states it doesn't matter how its mounted, it could warrant a defect. Check locally.
  3. having your coil packs showing: Shouldn't really matter.
  4. having black smoke stains on your bumper: As above, it just shows your car is rich and probably has been modified.
  5. having a after market ecu: Yeah but its not likely to be the first thing you would get picked up on.
  6. any aftermarket bov that is plumbed: Sometimes it doesn't matter if its plumbed back, people here HAVE been defected for running afterkmarket BOV's even when plumbed back.

Some rules are bullshit. I recall some guy here saying he got defected for his shielded pod because "it wasn't fully sealed..." Fully sealing an intake? I think some police officers should take basic mechanic lessons and learn that if you have a SEALED intake, you may as well be running a SEALED exhaust to prevent any emissions, or maybe some other awesome idea they would come back with like plumb back your exhaust into your intake. Its like smelling your own toxic fart forever, you won't last long.

Make everything black, not shiny, not stand out. Don't be a prick. Your self and the police deserve respect. Be respectful to you and they may show the same towards you and your car. Ive seen some police officers admire the work people put into their car.

This is the best advice.

Im not 100% sure on what Aussie cops are like, but the Kiwi cops generally arent out to get you. They only pull up modded cars because of the reputation "some" give them. And im glad for it. Some of those cocks need to be fined to death.

Once your friendly and co-operative, they soon realize your not a complete hoon and let you on your way.

Im yet to have a cop want to open the bonnet. And if he did, he more than likely wouldnt notice the GT30. All my Intercooler piping is stock, and my intake piping is painted the same black as the IC pipes :) Lurky Lurky!

yeah that doesnt happen in aus.

Would be nice if we could buy one of those butterfly valves to replace the hot dog or weld it in line to my exhaust behind the cannon. It will effectively have the same effect as muting the canon but without running a varex.

You don't need to be modified beyond recognition to get a yellow, just don't do anything stupid and attract unnecessary attention and you should be right.

Some defects might not need a whole check over, some people get defected and its just a matter of taking the car to any shop who does the rego pass thing and getting them to check it out and give you the tick. Its quite arse if you have to return to stock. Almost enough reason to sell the car for parts really.

Ive seen cars modded beyond engine recognition which have been on the roads for years in my area. Just respect your car, respect the rules and if you still get the yellow, let hell break loose lol.

There should be rules to modding cars but cmon, its too far. Induction noise from a pod filter warrants a defect? Sure a little wooshing sound is a little louder than stock but that harley davidson driving past my place at 2am deafening the shit out of everyone in the 2km surrounding area won't cop even a warning from police for the sound it makes. Its quite absurd. My car is HARDLY anywhere near as loud as those bikes yet I would get into shit and they wouldn't.. Don't even get me started on trucks. Their induction noise is like a f**king skyline amplified a million times.

you can get one from apexi for just that purpose. but closing it is much more detrimental to your system compared to using varex because varex redirects flow while restricting it where just a butterfly valve only restricts.

I dunno man. Much the same as someone above stated, show them respect and you will receive it back. I've been pull over once in the past yr and a half of owning my Skyline. The cop thought he heard my blow off valve and pulled me over. Walked around the car stated - 'Looks like you've spent some money with this, and you look after it. Pop your bonnet, you know the drill'. He heard the plumb back pressure come through through my POD filter and stated I couldn't have that sound. When I explained and pointed the sound should be coming off the trumpet he allowed me to rev again and said 'At the end of the day, you look after your car and it's clean, that's what's saved you'. He was pleasant throughout it all and wasn't arrogant.

And just to confirm, I'm not a hoon, nor a lead foot... but I do enjoy giving my car a squirt every once and awhile. Just know your limits and show the authority some respect and give them the benefit of the doubt they're not just going to be a prick. People give import cars a bad name, but at the end of the day, do things right and you shouldn't have a problem.

As for all the mods above, you should be right passing through. Just make everything as clean and tidy as you can and go for it. You won't know until you've done it for sure.

yes

i sure your right i just worry when i do get pulled over and ill get yellowed sticker for the most silliest thing.

my car very clean and looks stock as i can inside the cabin (no gauges) as i got the gtr gauges mounted that all you really need . well and a air/fuel would be nice to have

iv not been palled over yer . even with the black stains on the back of my car cops have just driven past maybe due to the fact i dont drive like a dick head on the road

i do respect the police and there just doing there job.

thanks every one

ps how much for that remote cannon that is sick and a great idea

xforce/varex is not very good stuff.

the quality is not there at all.

people constantly unhappy with their varex as the mechanisms have plastic components which melt.

xforce systems in general dont always fit very well.

if you want a decent variable muffler which wont affect performance and wont risk engine damage and is very strong and durable look up the far advanced

DYNOMAX VT MUFFLERS.

well all the other states must be a hell of a lot different to SA i've had my car prob just over a year and was on defect for 6 months of that time and i've been pulled up about 6-8 times and through regency 3 times and i don't drive like an idiot i baby the hell out of it especially if there is any cop in sight

sydney and brisbane are like this as well i believe.

ive just been lucky. i mean look at the car in my avatar, i drove that everywhere on the gold coast and brisbane for 7 months and got pulled over twice for rbt in the same night lol.

yer man i was looking at that pic and i was thinking . no mad man would try driving a car looking like that . it looks sick thumbsup.gif but if i did that in W.A i would be a weakling in a max prison and every one wanted to rape me ( IN THE A##)

HAHA not that bad but you know what i mean

when i had my series 2 stock except inter-cooler and cat back system i use to drive a round with stickers all over the car and when i got pulled over there was nothing to pick me on but i never got pulled over pick on.

but now with my series 1 400r inside and out replica with a stroker kit - turbo -injectors-1.5 dif - fly wheel- ecu -intercooler .its very clean looking there not even after market gauges inside the cabin. there no way ill go back to stock for a pit run ill just sell it for parts . so this is why i try to make it clean and stock looking as possible.

    • A stand alone boost controller will not give you the control you need, unlike a modern ECU. Your boost will always naturally target the wastegate's opening pressure first, your controller then will allow you to add more boost as required.
    • I recently discovered that I could not remove the outer bolt on one of my rear UCAs. Looked like it was seized to the crush tube. It wasn't all that long since I had last had that arm out (I dunno exactly, but certainly <2 yrs), so I was a bit surprised. I thought I had stock bushes in the rear knuckles, so I ordered some new PU bushes and resigned myself to having to do some dismantlery....and some butchery. It was clear that the seized bush was going to need to have the bolt cut out of it and then possibly some more brutality after that. Upon getting the 3x arms on each side disconnected from the knuckles (with the exception of the seized one, of course), I discovered that I had in fact put PU bushes into the knuckles when I did the subframe conversion about 12-13 years ago. So, I say "Oh, good, I might not have to swap any of these others out". We set to work butchering the bolt out of the seized arm. Stainless blade in a big-arse Milwaukee recipro made short work of it, and also damaged the arm, which added a welding and grinding and painting step to the whole exercise. During the butchery it became clear that the bolt was not just seized but bent. Head scratching ensued, as it is hard to understand how that bolt could get bent. I did suffer a broken (stock) toe control arm on that side a few months ago, and drove some miles with some significant rear wheel self steer and lack of control, which probably was the cause. But it's still hard to understand how it would bend that bolt, rather than just bend the arm. But here's the start of the real discoveries. The crush tube was rusty as all shit. I mean seriously rusty. A little on the inside, contributing to the tube seizing to the bolt (along with the bend). But the outside had at least 2-3mm of compressed flaky iron oxide jammed in between the parent metal and the PU bush. This one was brutalised and still took some effort to get the PU off the crush tube. So I thought I'd inspect the others more closely. The one on the tension rod adjacent the bent one was first. I had to use a 2-jaw puller to get the crush tube out, and it took some effort. It came out looking like the first one. All 6 of them were the same, except for one that looked not too bad. Had some corrosion on it, but was mostly OK. There was also a significant amount of corrosion on the inner surfaces of the knuckles. They took some convincing with pointy tools to let go their grip on the inside of the holes they were in. There was no sign of the original (SuperPro) lube anywhere. I and my bro-in-law have never seen any crush tube end up looking like this. It was seriously like the car has spent time putting boats into the water at the boat ramp. So, it seems like the PU might have been bonded to the steel on both sides, which would have to make them work more like stock rubber bushes (where arm deflection results in twist inside the rubber). Despite this, I have never had cause to believe that they were so tightly bound up. The suspension moved up and down much as you'd expect. The car never made any noises in those bushes that would have led me to believe there was a problem. Maybe the rusty interfaces actually were "sliding". Anyway, lesson learnt. Even quiet, non-troublesome PU bushes should be inspected every now and then!
    • the boost controller allows you to adjust the opening of the wastegate (which only has one preset spring) I'm going to see how it acts on it
    • I studied the principle of wastegate to begin with. so if I understood correctly. the moment when the turbo "spool" is where the boost control begins. When the target level of "psi" is reached the wastegate opens to regulate the exhaust pressure passing through the turbo and thus control its speed and the rate of boost
    • Right.  I'll try my best at a concise "bring you up to speed" on stuff that may be missing here - obviously open to questions or further input from others as relevant. Here's a datalog from a responsive turbo setup with electronic boost control being used a bit, to keep it simple I've marked 3 points of interest.  All of these charts are on the same time scale on the X-axis, so you can reference what engine rpm is doing in the top graph, boost and EMAP (exhaust backpressure) in the second graph, and turbo rpm in the bottom graph. A) The turbo gets it's power from exhaust gas, and pumping air takes work.  As a result you can't just spin a turbo with a fixed amount of exhaust energy and expect it to keep spooling - the bigger the turbo (ie, the more air it can push) the more exhaust energy you need to drive it.   The most obvious ways of getting more exhaust energy are by adding displacement, adding boost, or adding rpm - but as you add any of these the turbo also needs to do a bit more work so there is a big balance of these things needed to even get to your target boost and sometimes that's not even possible. What you can see in step "A" is that there isn't enough engine rpm or boost to reach the level we want, so this is where "lag" is.  The dyno run continues and rpm increases, which gives enough energy to increase boost, which helps spool  the turbine speed up even more - so you can see that the rate that the boost (and turbo speed) are starting to ramp up faster than the engine rpm is, so turbo is really starting to wake up as the graph gets closer to point B....   B) At this point we've been able to reach the boost that is actually desired at this point.   To stop the boost from going further than this the wastegate will open and bypass gas past the turbine, meaning it doesn't continue accelerating at the point it was before but instead carry on at a more progressive rate which matches what the engine needs.   The wastegate will have a spring in it which is rated to a specific pressure where it will start bypassing, but electronic boost control (managed by the ECU) can adjust how much pressure the spring sees in order to allow some tunability on how much boost the wastegate actually sees, and therefore how much exhaust it bypasses.   The tune in this case stops boost from ramping up HARD at around 21-22psi just before 4000rpm, then as the rpm continue it allows boost to continue up to around 25psi higher in the rpm.   You can see the turbo speed fairly steadily increases through the rpm to ensure it's keeping up with the increasing airflow demand due to the engine speed being higher and boost being pretty steady.   If the boost dropped off after a point then you may see the turbo speed level off or even drop.   C) You can see that despite the boost pressure staying pretty flat here, the exhaust pressure is steadily increasing and at this stage has overtaken boost pressure.   This isn't unusual, and is largely as a result of the increasing energy needed by the turbo to pump more and more air to suit the needs of the engine as it revs out further.   There are a bunch of variables in regards to how much back pressure there will be on a given turbo etc, but its one of the factors we manage when sizing and tuning a turbo setup.   When exhaust back pressure starts exceeding boost pressure you will eventually start seeing signs that the turbo is running out, the engine gets less keen to make more power and it gets harder to raise boost further. In this case it's a fairly acceptable compromise for the power level (around 630kw on a 3litre engine with full boost by 4000rpm), but you'd not want to push it a lot harder than this.  The maximum speed rated for the compressor wheel on this setup is around 125,000rpm so you can see its starting to get close on that side as well - I feel like this kind of illustrates some of the turbo related things we both decide on how far to push, and are also limited to how far we can push depending on the parts combination. Hope this helps more than it confuses things
