Im rocking a JVC headunit with usb control JVC 800W Amp and some JVC 6x9's in the back. They go hard, definitely 10x better than the sony I have up front. Also avoid fusion unless you get high performance range, but even then they cant handle much power going through them ( had them as my old 6x9's). Fusion for subs though i can vouch for =]

the sound system is only as good as the install

you could call a ipod with headphones a good soundsystem, or a wall of subs with 100,000 watts ?

the best stuff isnt even sold in oz without importing special and your pockets better be real deep !!! shipping a 100kilo sub cost a bit

Quality brands in my opinion:

Morel, Hertz, Crescendo, Alpine (older gear, not speakers), Pioneer PRS series, SB Acoustics, Fountek, Vifa, older Nakamichi, Focal, DLS, Audison.. These brand generally represent good quality products, though as said above, the stereo is only as good as the install, leave some of your budget for sound deadening and allow a lot of time to run the wiring properly, build proper enclosures and install everything correctly.

I use a $70 (Carefully chosen) midwoofer in my car, in a 2-way active system and I have only entered 1 SQ competition since installing my front stage, but they faired well against other $1500 front stages in my division.

+pioneer

+kenwood

+alpine

stay away from sony <-- cant stress this point enough

Hey guys! im about to start looking at getting a sound system put in.. I just want to know your opinions on some good quality brands! I have no idea so your help would be much appreciated :D

i would stick to the main brands, i prefer alpine and have never had a problem with any of the gear from them, hell i still gotta pair of 1st edition dddrive 5.25" splits from back in 96 that still go well today. never had any returns to them, however they are more expensive.

Best advice i can lend you would be set a budget : allow 20-25% of the cost for install if getting it all installed in one hit, 30% headunit and the remaining 50% for amps, front splits only and a sub/s. i say 30% for headunit cos its the brains imo, if it provides high volume clipping then it will only be amplified (pardon the pun) if you have amps subs splits and you dont want to ruin your new speakers. also when you go to concerts/raves/festivals nearly all the sound is supplied from in front of you, rear speakers (if any needed) are fill only, hence save your cash dont buy 6/7/8 x 9/10/12, if your thinking bout them for the rear forget it, put the money towards better quality/sounding splits for the front stage.

Go to all shops and listen to speakers when hunting for them, dont take other peoples word as this could lead to much disappointment. your ears hear differently to mine, and everybody elses. not sure bout now, but years ago a pair of jaycar splits costing bout 150 sounded way better than anything else under 500, they won many awards, so too did their sub's. my first setup while at uni consisted of alpine head deck, jaycar splits and 10" carbon sub powered by a nice alpine 4 channel amp, sounded awesome, ran second place in a small soundoff, and highest spl figure i got was 130db. bought a set of dddrive the following year to replace the jaycars and never turned my back on apline since really.

now im all apline, higher end gear and i absolutely love it!!

if you can install yourself, do it yourself, not with your mates, if they f**k something up, you and they wouldnt want to feel guilty.....after all its your car. secondly if you get it installed never let your mates touch/change any of the settings(this includes the volume knob too, you will one day turn it up to the point of crackling, everybody does, but you will also turn it down after noticing it, your mates may not). NEVER EVER let them adjust the gain on any amp you may get. if YOU are not happy with it how it sounds take it back to the installer and politely ask/say/tell them to adjust to suit your needs. If its professionally installed you can ask to test it before you leave to make sure YOU like how it sounds, after all its your car. if your mates are not happy with it how it sounds and want to start turning this and pressing that grab the nearest blunt force trauma producing object and promptly crack em with it. this makes it easier for you to kick them out your car.

finally, back in the day i had no idea either, i read read and read some more so i had a little knowledge of what these shops were talking to me about. if i didnt understand them then i asked them to explain it to me, if they couldnt they didnt need my business as i was clearly in the wrong place.

hope all my jibber jabber helps you in some way mate

need anything else, ask away or shoot me a pm

I agree with this, My gear is in no way the quality as above but I still had it running the way I wanted and it all went well... (may have powered the rear speakers up aswell though) This was however untill some of my mates thought theyd start cracking around my sounds and I have got it to sound the same =[ and rears just muffle and crackle around at high volume.

With gear in general though (again i've probably got a lot lower quality gear than most people) but if they have a performance series or competition series I myself have found its worth the money investing in it. Like the man said though, find an audio store that knows what theyre talking about and listen to it so you find what you want

i say 30% for headunit cos its the brains imo, if it provides high volume clipping then it will only be amplified (pardon the pun) if you have amps subs splits and you dont want to ruin your new speakers.

clipping part only applicable if you are powering speakers using the internal speaker amp in the headunit. your rca outs you can always keep low and add the gain on your amps.

when shopping for a headunit just make sure the headunit has the adjustments you want, its annoying to go to the boot to adjust x-overs and gains on amps.

    • Turbo gods, some assistance and recommendations please I'm looking into a turbo kit for my 2.5 from MX5 Mania >>>>> https://mx5mania.com.au/products/copy-of-mx-5-nc-2-5-litre-engine-conversion-turbo-2005-2013 Power wise I would like about 200kw atw, and of course dose noises, apparently if you keep a stock 2.5 under around 200kwatw the engine will not hate life even when ragging on it a bit Max RPM on the 2.5 is around 6500rpm The turbo MX5 use is something around the disco potato size as  packaging room for the turbo is pretty limited, which will, I believe will give me my power goals and not have the turbo either under, or oversized, but the rear housing bit is confusing  It comes with either a 0.64 or 0.86 From my understanding, which so far is based off googling, so make of that what you will 0.64: spools faster = good Makes more EGT heat on boost = bad Less topend power than 0.86 = I'm only looking for 200 atw so that point may be mute????, I don't know, hence my questions  0.86: Spools a "little" slower = how much slower??? remembering 6500 is my max rpm Makes less EGT heat = good Makes a little more power up top = again, power goals is only around 200 Also, this is a street car, so there will not really be any long track sessions, in saying this I would want it so it was happy with at least 3 hot laps at Wakefield Park if the need arises  I already have a fancy pants triple pass radiator, and a oil cooler with thermostat will be getting installed as well Thanks for any information or recommendations you have 👍, and of course, the comments about me wasting money on drive in drive out modifications, or any other snide remarks about my manhood for owning a MX5 🤣
    • Tape some wool onto the vent then take it for a drive I did this to my reverse cowl and was instantly unhappy, as anything over about 60kph would have the wool enter the engine bay, thus just adding underbonnet pressure and stooging my coolant stack, it did let alot of heat out when stationary though, which really didn't help once the car was moving, with the reverse cowl you could watch the coolant temps cheap up the faster you went on the hwy, I assume it would be alot worse doing track day speed With the vented bonnet (just after the radiator and about 1/3 up the bonnet) on my old R33 the wool on the leading edge sat at about a 45° angle as air poured out of it From looking where your vents are, and their size, I believe you should be fine at speed and air should be evacuated from the engine bay, I think it will be a night and day difference when stuck in traffic though for removing the trapped heat, and not sitting there cooking when parked up after driving around... #convection  Post wool tuft pics and data for science  This beastie is one nice and unique rig, enjoy
    • It is possible to do this stuff for "cheap". But you need to be able to get deals on all the bigger items, and it really helps if you're fully capable of doing your own work. As soon as you're paying retail for new parts, or buying "kits" because you can't fabricate necessary bits and pieces, and if you really need someone else to take the reins of doing the work because you don't have the space/time/skills/confidence to  rip deep into the car and put it back together in a working fashions.....then you pay. And these days, pay means a lot of money. You'd think things would get cheaper, but they don't. They just seem to keep getting more and more expensive.
    • It’s almost the price of an engine build, you won’t have anything to bolt onto it though
    • Hopefully it's enough to help with the temps! I was also only shit stirring, regarding Murphy's Law basically. I've found, what ever spare parts I have, are the parts I don't break. Ever. Also have never had issues with oil/spinning bearings until I put oil pressure gauges on the car. 😛
