Hey again guys,

Upto my next stage of mods for my r33 gtst which will be a new fmic now i have no idea how to install one or how much trouble etc,

But i got a quote from a well known import specialist locally, which was for a justjap intercooler for 490$ which they reckon would be harder to install or my other option was

A blitz intercooler which they said would fit easier and its of better quality to the justjap which they wanted 760$ now they reckon it would take approx 8hrs aka full day to do ?? is this correct does it actually take that long??

Cheer's also if i go ahead would you recommend the Blitz or the justjap? Is there that much of a difference?

Thanks in advance,

A few hours yourself and you can install it without having to pay any1. Difficulty level = low.

Chinese made core (just jap).... may not be as good as some jap brands, but hey, unless you're after a 500 hp drag monster the JJR cooler is fine for a street setup in aussie conditions.

oh ok just i hear allot of people having to cut parts of the car etc to fit correctly? Which i know if anything weakens the structure would be illegal and require a engineering cert if i remember.

Yea in some cases the Reo bar and front bar may need to be shaved a little, but that's only some cases. My return flo cooler fit with no alterations required to any part of the body.

Just Jap is the Australian Blitz Distributor, and they have the Blitz Return Flow cooler kits for cheaper than you have been quoted.

Check their website: http://www.justjap.com/store/home.php?cat=339

The Return Flow intercooler kits take nowhere near 8 hours to fit

wow yea i can the difference in pricing they mentioned blitz i know for sure and a aussie made cooler justjap.. exactly how they said don't know if that was the brand they were referring to or.. yea 8hrs i thought was ridiculous i thought these things were basically built to sit in flush onto a r33

Ill ring them back ask a few more questions

Yeah get a return flow so you don't have to do cutting except to trim the reo bar. In principle the Blitz kit should be easier to install (better piping tolerances) but heaps of people have fitted the Cooling Pro coolers just fine.

I got myself a second hand Trust turnflow (vertical flow) kit last year and fitted it myself, works well but took a fair while to install: http://www.skylinesa...r-installation/

8 hours by an experienced workshop sounds a bit much though. Good luck.

To be legal in Victoria - you need a return flow intercooler and keep the stock airbox.

If it doesn't go back to the stock holes on the passenger side, you need to cut. Cutting if you have airbags, will never be engineerable down here in Vic.

Stupid rules, but thats how it is.

So go return flow, keep stock airbox = 100% legal.

Yea i want to keep the car as legal as possible... I gave them a ring asked why take so long had some dude tell me that there's a difference between installing it on a coupe to a 4 door also kept mentioning on varying on how much modifying they would have to do aka cutting etc ? ?? O.o and yea the blitz was 719$ which i want to get, based on apparently being cheaper in labor to install and is of better quality,

They reckon possibly 7-8 hours to install estimate and at the cost of 100$ bucks for every 1.5hrs of work which is like 600 for the day roughly on top of the 719$ blitz Fmic :S, spoke to two people one avoided me when i asked if it was a return flow as if he didn't know wtf i was on about...(which there getting back to me on)

Which as you guys said return flow and a stock airbox (which i have) is 100% legal in vic

Im on the fence about this one lol.. I think there main mechanic which works mainly on the skylines wasn't in, because the original phone call the guy seemed to know what he was talking about and had owned so many skylines as he told me..

Just the way this guy came across was that there was going to be so much cutting and modifying to fit and mentioned saying if you get pulled over its un-roadworthy O.o

Cheer's for the feedback guys

I fitted a jjr turn flow in 3-4 hours including going and buying a grinder and I had problems re fitting the bumper, not because of the intercooler just awkward to hold and push on.

Yea ive had a few guys tell me took a few hours and did it themselves, just baffles me why a experienced mechanic would want a whole day to do it..

Go to a different mechanic. These guys don't seem to know what they are talking about... And I don't see how a 2dr coupe front end is any different intercooler/engine bay wise to a 4dr... They r pulling your leg on that 1.

Seem like they either don't know what they are on about or just trying to bend you over...

I bought the black (stealth) return flow FMIC from Just Jap & got a local shop to install it (since I was too noob to DIY :whistling:)& it was like $200 for the install.

I dropped the car off in the morning & picked it up around lunch time so no idea where they get their 6-8 hour quote from...

6 to 8 hours for an install? Does he have one arm? Took me and a mate less than 4 hours to do mine and that included welding up all New stainless pipeing on the intake side of the FMIC. Didnt have to cut the reo, only trim the front bar a little. On a r32 but there is zero difference between the r32 and r33 kits

I have a r33 s2 and fitted a blitz return flow intercooler on it last week.

I can tell you now, do not pay anyone to fit the cooler for you. Its not hard, just time consuming. And if i can do it, trust me you can too.

I think it took us about 5 hrs (yes it could have been alot quicker but we were very thorough with our cutting and it was my first intercooler install)

The reo bar needed to be cut as did the front bar.

This is the part that takes the most time. But apart from that it was quite straight forward.

Just take your time and dont trim more than you need to and you cant go wrong.

    • Ah right. Maybe my rb just loves chewing through batteries lol.
    • On the R34 can't you just unplug the IACV? This is the way I've always done it on the R33. Disconnect IACV, get it idling around 650rpm, and then do a power reset on the ECU to get it to relearn idle (factory ECU).   The big reason no one has touched on as to why you'd want to get the base idle right, is that it means the computer needs to make smaller adjustments to get a good idle at 700-750rpm.   Also, cleaning the IACV won't normally make the car suddenly idle lower or higher. The main issue with the IACV gumming up is that the valve sticks. This means the inputs the ECU gives, aren't translating to changes in air flow. This can cause idle choppy ness as the ECU is now needing to give a lot of input to get movement, but then it moves too far, and then has to do the same in reverse, and it can mean the ECU can't catch stalls quickly either.
    • 12.8 for a great condition, fully charged battery. If the battery will only ever properly charge to about 12.2V, the battery is well worn, and will be dead soon. When I say properly charge, I mean disconnect it from the car, charge it to its max, and then put your multimeter on it, and see what it reads about an hour later. Dieing batteries will hold a higher "surface charge", but the minutest load, even from just a multimeter (which in the scheme of things is considered totally irrelevant, especially at this level) will be enough over an hour to make the surface charge disappear.   I spend wayyy too much time analysing battery voltages for customers when they whinge that our equipment (telematics device) is causing their battery to drain all the time. Nearly every case I can call it within about 2 months of when the battery will be completely dead. Our bigger customers don't even debate it with me any more ha ha ha. A battery at 12.4 to 12.6 I'd still be happy enough with. However, there's a lot of things that can cause a parasitic draw in a car, first of which is alarms and immobilisers. To start checking, put your multimeter into amps, (and then connect it properly) and measure your power draw with everything off. Typical car battery is about 40aH. Realistically, you'll get about half this before the car won't start. So a 100mA power drain will see you pretty much near unstartable in 8 days.
    • Car should sit at 12.2 or more, maybe 12.6 or 12.7 when fully charged and happy. If there is a decent enough parasitic load then it will certainly go lower than 12.2 with time. You can't beat physics.
    • Ok guess I can rule out the battery, probably even the starter and alternator (maybe) as well. I'm gonna clean those leads and see what happens if it's still shit I might take it to an auto electrician. Unless the immobiliser is that f**king heavy, but it shouldn't be.  If I start the car every day, starts up perfectly never an issue. Isn't 12v low, shouldn't it be around 12.5v?
