Ever wanted to be the star in a Top Gear Challenge?

Ash has asked each of the interstate clubs to do a video on the road trip to the SAU Nationals. A 5 minute video will be put on the event DVD.

However, I'm not going to invest that much time and effort just for a 5 minute video. So, SAU NSW will be doing a big production that will be more like a 15-30 minute piece. It will be shot semi Top Gear style and semi-indie film style.

I'm looking for 6 participants.

Requirements:

You must be able to take an extra day off work before the nationals. We will be heading down early to give extra time filming along the way. We may even (need to vote) take an extra diversion through Jindabine to break up the boring drive down and get some nice tasty mountain road shots.

You will need to be available for a couple of day shoots before the event (weekends, cause I work weekdays).

You will need to be able to make a short intro video like this one (from 0:30 to 2:00). Don't worry, you have to come up with the ideas and I'll help you shoot the video all pro like.

If we decide as a group that we want to pursue the Top Gear style theme (a.k.a. - the challenges) then I also need to make sure you can enter the Sept 3 Texi and the Winton Track day at the SAU Nats.

And of course you'll need to pay for your own lodging during the trip down and event. There also might be some small items you will need to purchase for inclusion in the filming. But don't worry I will make sure we keep the spending limit tight.

What will you get? Well a great experience with a bunch of friendly folks making this road trip the most memorable experience - and a full production grade video to show at the end of it!

I have the camera gear - including two of my own GoPro HD's and two full HD video cameras and lots of kit for those beauty shots.

Oh, you also can't be camera shy. This film will be shared with the club for promotional purposes.

This is one of the projects I've been wanting to do for so long. So, Who's in?

Interested.

Any further info Eric on what type of "challenges"

Trying to race a snow mobile through the snowfields of Jindabyne for example has me a little worried :)

As would painting each others cars with a can of dulux!

you don't want 'screw you ju-liar and the rest of your puppets' written on the side of your car?

Well guys I didn't want to let the cat out of the bag on the challenges.

Once the group has formed then we will think of a few challenges and agree, but here are some of my own ideas.

1) Evade Sniper Fire - each contestent gets one of those nerf dart guns and a pack of suction cup darts. The other contestent has to drive a slolom from one end to the other while the others shoot darts. Points are counted based on number and placement of darts (e.g. points for windows, car door, bonnet - based on "emulated" damage caused to a car).

2) Make your own spy gadget for your car. Self explanitory really but points are a bit subjective.

3) Precision stop - four chalk outlines are marked on the road. From rolling 40k's you have to stop as precisely as possible close to chalk outlines. Sum the distances for total score.

I'm sure there's lots of other stuff we can think of, but you get the idea. Noth'n that will damage your car.

James, I hadn't thought about non-road registered ones. It would be a bit difficult and a bit of a drive out of your way with a trailer. I'd love a 31 as I think it is better viewing if we have a number of different cars. Your thoughts?

So we need some commitments for this to go forward folks. Q: Is the Winton Track Day keeping folks from considering? If so then vocalise so we can decide if we need to drop that portion to make this a flyer.

I'm keen to do the project but only if we've got a few people locked in. This is going to take a fair while to organise and shoot.

Whaddya need me to do? just hit a deer tonight so going to need a new front bar, bonnet, radiator etc in the next week or so but as 'creative director' for the videos maybe you could decide on which direction i should go? eg carbon fibre bonnet or something else. R33 silver, otherwise fine.

Jeez, hit a deer! Well at least October's a few months away. Being a stock 33 at least your intercooler is tucked away at the side.

I've got a spare stock GTR 2 core if you want it, you can have it. It's 33 so think it should fit.

For the videos it's more important that you are just proud of your skyline. That's all that really matters and is what this video is about. Well, that and going on a big roadtrip to meet up with a bunch of other skyline owners/lovers.

Paul (Piggas) is in for this too. I've also had a chat to Yo-Yo as well, who might be if he can get the time off work.

We need more response than this if this is going to be a flyer.

I'm open to suggestions folks. If Jindabyne is too far then we can axe that idea. I also had another storyline though - doing "What's your Skyline Story". How did you get to the Skyline you currently have? Why did you pick a Skyline? etc. With voice over and video of you driving, working on it, washing it. What ever.

We need at least 2-3 more people to commit to get in on this before I book my accomodation and start the itinerary.

    • In a few years from now, you'll regret that. It'll eat away at you, knowing the truth of the ugly hiding beneath the beautiful exterior... 😛
    • I don't think the G2 profile is particularly dangerous for the engine per se, more just are you actually ok with the turbo lag trade-offs? If the answer is yes then go for it. I personally don't think I'd be ok with it because I spend so much time at lower RPMs and I really enjoy the feeling of being able to stay in 5th gear on the highway and just roll into the throttle to get boost. Or staying in 3rd gear on "gentle canyon cruises" without feeling the turbo lag too badly. The 525 pump should be able to run flat out on factory lines but I would bet the pressure drop from pump to regulator is quite impressive. I don't know how much it would be exactly but I've seen figures like 30 psi thrown around.
    • It's interesting seeing everyone talk about what level of risk they are happy to tolerate.  Building a GTR always has a level of risk, you could be that lucky guy that drops 20k on the engine build alone and still has the thing go pop on the dyno. Life is fun like that.  The way I see it, the thing is a toy to be enjoyed. I'd be happy to turn up the power on stock motor and limit the risk with sensible tuning and engine protection. If it still goes pop, it is what it is. The car isn't a daily driver so it can happily sit while a plan is made to sort it out.  Given this thing will be a street car only, I really feel it's worth the (relatively small if managed well) risk to turn the power up to around 350KW on e85.  I don't think anyone getting into the skyline game now is doing it out of logic. Surely it is a purely emotional decision so I'm not sure how important it is to think about the engine build logically. The heart wants what it wants.  @joshuaho96 little note for Josh, I run my 525 pump flat out all the time and through the factory lines without any issues. (excluding the melting connectors, that's sorted now. we'll pretend it never happened lol)
    • But the Nexus S3 is very expensive and won't be as purpose-built for the application as a separate electronic boost controller :^) More seriously my pet issue here would be that the Walbro 525 running at 100% duty cycle is going to require more FPR than the stock setup can handle. I'm also pretty sure from what I've seen elsewhere you might want to slow down the pump regardless unless you're going to come up with some way of upsizing the fuel lines coming from the fuel tank. Factory 8mm fuel line doesn't actually flow very much if you want to keep pressure drop down between the fuel pump outlet and FPR. If you really want to "keep it simple" I would run only as much pump as you need and source a fuel pump controller to slow down the pump in the vain hope of being able to run stock-style FPRs which are pretty dinky. Or just use the HICAS lines and it should be mostly fine. OP should also really think hard about what profile they'd want out of the turbo. My pet choice here would be the G1 profile rather than anything higher power but YMMV. I already think ~stock turbo lag is pretty bad so I don't want to make it worse. In "gentle canyon cruising" I found that I spent a lot of time around 4-4.5k RPM. I also recommend DIYing labor if you're detail-oriented enough. Costs are high for labor + if you do it yourself you can be your own quality control.
    • GTSBoy is again on the money. My actual advice? Sell the car. (really). For what it's worth as is, you can sidegrade into something much better. If you care about function then this is the actual move. If you want a Skyline to perform, set aside about $100K to do it. This is NOT a typo. You will see right away these are two very different mindsets. Realistically we're talking full restomod for any Skyline still kicking around. Have an honest think about which one you are.. and what you want to do, and how much you want to invest in this (with no return).
