Hey guys,

I just fitted an EBC to my GTS-T and noticed that it was pinging like crazy at only around 10psi or so, which seems awfully low for a stock GTS-T. The only other mods really are air filter and cat-back exhaust. The normal GST-T map should be more likly to R&R at that boost and mods I would think.

However whenever I'm parking or moving real slow I can smell the richness, so it's definitely over rich around idle, but must be way lean when it's loaded up on boost + revs.

After thinking about it a bit I remember when I bought it I noticed the CAS position looks almost fully to the right, like if the nuts were undone and you twisted it almost all the way clockwise. It looked much more "turned" than what I remember the rb25 I had in my 180sx was, which from memory was much more a neutral position. I don't know if this setting is advanced or retarded, I would assume advanced, which I'm thinking could be the cause of this pinging.

My question to you all is, can you tell from visually inspecting a CAS position if it's wrong like that or could it be one of the many other causes IE bad fuel, clogged fuel filter, bad pump etc.

I am planning to get it looked at when I fit a dump pipe, and I've turned the boost back to stock for now, but I just wanted to see if any of you guys agree?

Its possible. Mine was pinging like crazy when the weather got warm. It had been SAFC tuned by a no longer trusted tuner, and he advanced it 4 degrees.

So i reset mine and bought a G4. lol

Set it back to the middle def.

Does someone setting it with a timing light require a dyno or just the light itself?

And if I want to just set it closer to where it should be in the middle or just touch nothing until I get someone to look with a timing light?

If its as far advanced as you say it is, then retarding it back wont hurt you in any way. It might feel down on power perhaps, or it might even pick up a little.

But using a timing light to get it spot on would be better.

a while back i set my cas all the way to the right and i was running 11psi with FMIC and exhaust, but with octane booster the car never pinged, or atleast i couldnt hear anything... but around the middle is about right..

do not set it back to the middle and leave it, that'll be worse. turning the cas clockwise retards the timing, anti clockwise advances it. get a timing light and check what the timings like. if its too far advanced and the cas is turned all the way clockwise then pull it out and check if the half moon locator is still on the cam. if it is your cam timing is out

My half moon is still in my cam and CAS and mines advanced the full way for 15 degrees.

yer cool. i said if the timing wasnt right and it was maxxed out for adjustment then either the half moon is gone or the cam timings out. if the timings correct then leave it and turn the boost down

Thanks everyone. I'll get it look at asap with a timing light. Hopefully the belt has been installed correctly and the CAS isn't set like that to compensate for cam gears being teeth out or whatever.

I have a question that is kinda related to this. If you have a Power FC and the handcontroller is showing 15 degrees at idle, can you then put a timing light on and set the CAS to be triggering at 15 degrees on the balancer mark.

Probably not the best explanation but was thinking about this today and thought it should work and would make it easier to set base timing. Thoughts?
