Don't you have an HKS tuner over there?

HKS Fcon iS will do (at least) as much as the eManage Ultimate and can be picked up pretty cheap (have seen them on eBay for $300-350).

Problem is that the ECU will still try to tune around it.

On the plus side, the ECU will also accommodate and self tune for basic mods such as exhaust, runner spacer and suction pipe (although the SP will max out the AFM)

Ok.

Just spoke to another tuning house, to my knowledge the only one that does Fcon tuning in W.A.

He's confident with the whole thing, he seemed to know a lot about our ecu (except he though 19 psi was way too high on stock turbo. He said 1 bar but I thought that was stock )

F-con IS inc harness $1500, $700 tune. Total $2200

Full TBE HSK twin/dual I think he said? $1300 fitted

HKS boost controller $500 fitted

Suction pipe and time to do throttle wire cut mod not quoted.

Perhaps this is a better way to go as no one will do an emanage and I'm not confident with any other system besides Fcon at the moment?

He did say that if I want larger injectors/turbo we'd need to go the Fcon pro but it gets expensive.

HKS do a plug in harness for the F0con, so I'm not sure you need to pay extra to fit it.

Hunt around, get one cheaper, then get him to tune it? Tuning cost doesn't seem excessive IMHO, but $1500 for the F-con IS seems astronomical compared to the $300 Cam quoted.

What?

Fcon iS can definitely handle larger injectors. It is a very comprehensive piggyback... but in the end it IS a piggyback.

The Fcon V-Pro will be better suited to our tricky ECU's.

You might want to make sure he can actually get hold of a VQ25det Fcon harness (NP5-15) first.

They are a discontinued item and from what I have been told HKS have no intention of making up any more... hence discontinued.

They ain't cheap either, mine set me back around the $420 mark... but they are farkin serious compared to the eManage universal harness.

So $1500 for a harness and brand new Fcon iS still high although as an HKS dealer, they'd have to put their margin on top of the normal price.

You could always try Jesse Streeter or RHDJapan to see if you can get both cheaper, but I'm sure you could get an iS over here for pretty cheap.

Also, you might want to check which EVC (boost controller) it is for $500.

lol... just noticed... Twin Dual turbo back exhaust?

I have a feeling he is thinking of another car/engine.

Has he seen your car and engine (without cover)?

Make sure he is not thinking of either a C34 Stagea (RB25det) or the VQ35de engine (350z/V35 etc)

Or they are not an authorized reseller so can not make a profit..

And HOW!

He did specify the VQ25DET so I hope he got all the parts right. He said that he had one harness left in stock in his shop. It looks as though I'd be better off buying the Fcon elsewhere and buying the harness from him. He was reading from something under NM35 stagea when he recommended that exhaust but I'm not exactly sure what brand it was :-/

Otherwise should I go elsewhere for the exhaust or just get him to get the legalis? Does that come as a full kit or do I still need a custom dump?

So if I want to upgrade injectors and turbo at a later stage id Fcon IS will still handle it? Damn I wish I knew more about mechanics so I'm able to articulate myself better when speaking to the tuners.

If the VQ25det harness is the NP5-15 and you want to go an HKS ecu, I'd say grab it as it is one of the few left... anywhere.

Dunno about a True Dual exhaust for VQ25det. We have a single exhaust due to a single turbo and it is certainly a crap load of work to put dual mufflers since the ATTESSA pump's cradle is where the driver's side muffler would go.

Any of the Jap exhausts are cat-back only, although I think that Garage Maki do a full exhaust (or did).

Fujitsubo Legalis, Nismo (76mm version), Kakimoto R or Blitz NUR are the pick of Jap branded exhausts IMO, but they are all cat-back so you'd need a dump and front pipe/cat made up to suit.

CLICK HERE for a list I made up a couple of years ago and is missing a few units, but you get the idea.

Of course the iS will cope with larger injectors. You'll just need a retune when you go larger... as you would with an eManage Ultimate.

For reference, there is a 3.6L VQ25det Stagea in Japan putting out 450awps running a re-flashed ECU (mainly to play with the cam timing and remove speed limiter) and an Fcon iS... so I'd say it was capable.

My preference is the V-Pro (version 3.2 or 3.24 only) over the iS, but the iS will be fine.

When I asked Streeter about the Fcon V Pro harnesses for the VQ25DET he said had access to stock....about $400 delivered I think.

If your really keen on going HKS there's a 3.3 on IM:

Sorry if anyone here is bidding on it...:pirate:

Bloody great buy. I think I'll go the IS at the moment. ( bound to regret this ) as I'll end up over budget at this time because no doubt I'll want the whole hog now. I can afford 5k but not 9kangry.gif - I'd spend every last cent I have otherwise.

Think I'll be settling with a prompt 200awkw car rather than a 250+monster

I appreciate the effort and thought you've gone to mate.

I like the sound of $300-$500 Fcon IS as mentioned above.... If I can find one.

Interesting, when was this?

Pretty cheap iS (just chuck or sell the harness)

Cheap V-Pro... IF it actually is a 3.3 (serial should be 30000 or higher)

http://www.importmonster.com.au/view?url=http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m86845788&thumb=http://f3.auctions.c.yimg.jp/img319.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/4/2/5/2/maxpower1115-thumb-1312634529559006.jpg&title=

EDIT: just noticed that is the same V-Pro that Jethro linked to. Good buy if the seller will confirm the serial. As a note, you need any V-Pro with the serial higher than 200001 (v3.2 or higher)

Thanks for finding this for me.

I've never used this site before. I presume if I loose out on the bid my account is re-credited or am I obliged to spend the deposited $$ there?

If you dont win the auction you dont pay anything thumbsup.gif the funds will stay with IM, however you can ask them to transfer it back to you after the auction has ended

Or you can just contact Jesse Streeter and ask him to bid for you. Easier because he does everything, and seems cheaper too.

I think I'll take this option....just to make sure I don't F anything up. Fcon IS shouldn't be too hard though, unless I need a particular serial#

Is he the best option for the exhaust too?

Ryan, the Dolphin intake doesn't replace the lower restrictive part of the intake only the rubber part afaik.

I think the stock injectors, suction pipe, cooler etc will allow perhaps 190kw on 98. Any more and there are big changes to be made.

what are these changes???

for say 250-300KW@W

Injectors, Fuel pump, Intercooler, 3 inch intake, full 3 inch free exhaust, Map sensor, standalone engine management (V PRO, PS2000), Large frame turbo, Built gearbox, the list goes on... While you can do over 250 on petrol on the highflow/emanage it isn't a safe tune and ethanol is required imo.

Isn't Aaron running close to 300 on 98?

What do you think you'd need to make over 250 safe on 98? V Pro and cable throttle?

    • First up, I wouldn't use PID straight up for boost control. There's also other control techniques that can be implemented. And as I said, and you keep missing the point. It's not the ONE thing, it's the wrapping it up together with everything else in the one system that starts to unravel the problem. It's why there are people who can work in a certain field as a generalist, IE a IT person, and then there are specialists. IE, an SQL database specialist. Sure the IT person can build and run a database, and it'll work, however theyll likely never be as good as a specialist.   So, as said, it's not as simple as you're thinking. And yes, there's a limit to the number of everything's in MCUs, and they run out far to freaking fast when you're designing a complex system, which means you have to make compromises. Add to that, you'll have a limited team working on it, so fixing / tweaking some features means some features are a higher priority than others. Add to that, someone might fix a problem around a certain unrelated feature, and that change due to other complexities in the system design, can now cause a new, unforseen bug in something else.   The whole thing is, as said, sometimes split systems can work as good, and if not better. Plus when there's no need to spend $4k on an all in one solution, to meet the needs of a $200 system, maybe don't just spout off things others have said / you've read. There's a lot of misinformation on the internet, including in translated service manuals, and data sheets. Going and doing, so that you know, is better than stating something you read. Stating something that has been read, is about as useful as an engineering graduate, as all they know is what they've read. And trust me, nearly every engineering graduate is useless in the real world. And add to that, if you don't know this stuff, and just have an opinion, maybe accept what people with experience are telling you as information, and don't keep reciting the exact same thing over and over in response.
    • How complicated is PID boost control? To me it really doesn't seem that difficult. I'm not disputing the core assertion (specialization can be better than general purpose solutions), I'm just saying we're 30+ years removed from the days when transistor budgets were in the thousands and we had to hem and haw about whether there's enough ECC DRAM or enough clock cycles or the interrupt handler can respond fast enough to handle another task. I really struggle to see how a Greddy Profec or an HKS EVC7 or whatever else is somehow a far superior solution to what you get in a Haltech Nexus/Elite ECU. I don't see OEMs spending time on dedicated boost control modules in any car I've ever touched. Is there value to separating out a motor controller or engine controller vs an infotainment module? Of course, those are two completely different tasks with highly divergent requirements. The reason why I cite data sheets, service manuals, etc is because as you have clearly suggested I don't know what I'm doing, can't learn how to do anything correctly, and have never actually done anything myself. So when I do offer advice to people I like to use sources that are not just based off of taking my word for it and can be independently verified by others so it's not just my misinterpretation of a primary source.
    • That's awesome, well done! Love all these older Datsun / Nissans so rare now
    • As I said, there's trade offs to jamming EVERYTHING in. Timing, resources etc, being the huge ones. Calling out the factory ECU has nothing to do with it, as it doesn't do any form of fancy boost control. It's all open loop boost control. You mention the Haltech Nexus, that's effectively two separate devices jammed into one box. What you quote about it, is proof for that. So now you've lost flexibility as a product too...   A product designed to do one thing really well, will always beat other products doing multiple things. Also, I wouldn't knock COTS stuff, you'd be surprised how many things are using it, that you're probably totally in love with As for the SpaceX comment that we're working directly with them, it's about the type of stuff we're doing. We're doing design work, and breaking world firsts. If you can't understand that I have real world hands on experience, including in very modern tech, and actually understand this stuff, then to avoid useless debates where you just won't accept fact and experience, from here on, it seems you'd be be happy I (and possibly anyone with knowledge really) not reply to your questions, or input, no matter how much help you could be given to help you, or let you learn. It seems you're happy reading your data sheets, factory service manuals, and only want people to reinforce your thoughts and points of view.
    • I don't really understand because clearly it's possible. The factory ECU is running on like a 4 MHz 16-bit processor. Modern GDI ECUs have like 200 MHz superscalar cores with floating point units too. The Haltech Nexus has two 240 MHz CPU cores. The Elite 2500 is a single 80 MHz core. Surely 20x the compute means adding some PID boost control logic isn't that complicated. I'm not saying clock speed is everything, but the requirements to add boost control to a port injection 6 cylinder ECU are really not that difficult. More I/O, more interrupt handlers, more working memory, etc isn't that crazy to figure out. SpaceX if anything shows just how far you can get arguably doing things the "wrong" way, ie x86 COTS running C++ on Linux. That is about as far away from the "correct" architecture as it gets for a real time system, but it works anyways.
