I'm trying to work out the best way to go with tyres for my stag. I'll be running them on an 18x9.5 rim, and my options are kuhmo ku31s, federal 595-ss, Yokohama Advan A-13 and Nitto NT05. I live in Tassie so need something which can handle a variety of conditions, and good grip in the wet is really important. Any thoughts or experiences you have had with any of these tyres would be awesome.

Thanks

Tim

I'm running KU31's in 245/40/18. Best rubbers I've had ever. Then again all the cars I've had in the past always had regular passenger tyres geared towards comfort/NVH.

Yoko Advan is probably the best but I suspect they'll cost more too? Ku31's are great value...

I've emailed Taleb tyres and they quoted me $260 a tyre for the Yokohama's. They are getting me a quote on the Kuhmo's. That's exactly the size I'll be looking at, so it's good to know you've found them good.

I was quoted around 185 per corner for the ku31s from tempe tyres...

AFAIK Federal 595 doesn't have great wet weather grip. I'm looking at the new Hankooks when I get my tires sorted, or maybe Silverstones, but only heard good things about the KU31s.

Aaron does love his Pirellis too...

one site....and nearly at the same price as hangkangs

www.tirerack.com

shipping is about $350 US

So, any legal issues for bringing in tyres from USA? Do they have/need ADR's?

There are some cheap tyres on there that, even with shipping, work out to be good value landed. Maybe a heap of us put together a container load... LOL

Im running Pirreli PZero 18" semislick tyres on my Stagea

Best car tyre Ive ever sampled.

Got them $150each from SAU trader TalebTyres; they sold a container load of old stock on ebay.

Treadwear rating of 80 !! Super soft 'road' tyre, compared to KU36 semislick tyres that have treadwear rating of 180.

Dont get to wrapped around the axles with tread wear ratings, the manufacturer does its own testing and write what they want really, also old stock will be dried up and hard, check date of manufacture.

I wouldnt buy tyres from Australia anymore when I can get tyres for $160 in the US that cost $450 here, and even with $350 delivery fee it still cost less, $990 as opposed to $1800.

Until I can get them for the same price my money goes to helping the US economy.

Thanks for all the info guys, I have contacted Tempe Tyres for a price, and the have given me the best price so far ($200 each delivered), BUT they have also said I should be looking at 255/35 or 265/35 instead of the 245/40 to go on the 9.5 inch rim. Which size would be the best way to go???

I contacted tirerack.com as well, and need to send them some more info to get the quote, so will do that this morning too.

Best to keep to the same overall height so as not to put your speedo out any further unless you don't care about that :whistling:

Try this tyre calculator: http://www.kouki.co....size-calculator

BTW, I'm running Mastercraft Touring LSR 245/45R18 96V. They have treadwear rating of 520. I ran them on my Magna and got 70,000km out of a set of four with constant rotation at 5000km. They have a symmetrical pattern so can be rotated in the traditonal pattern rather the asymmetrical method of front/rear on the same side. I paid $265 per tyre. I'm impressed with them but have only done 1000km so far.

Quite a difference in car weight between the magna at 1300kg and the stagea at 1720kg though!!!!

I've used the tyre calculators before to check rolling diameter, trouble is there is no allowance for wheel size and therefore potential stretch. That one did have the info on recommended size though which was useful, looks like I should be going for 255s.

Any other thoughts or experiences are useful though!

    • Still fast enough to have fun (kinda). Time for a modern turbo with a divided turbine housing and a proper twin scroll manifold. I think 400-450kW is a great place to be, provided it's all in before 4500 rpm.
    • i'm not at 600 though 😢 its 484hp (356kw) at the wheels..
    • Nice. 600ish HP is probably a nice place to be.
    • In the US the EPA has been going after shops that sold aftermarket ECU tuning software that allowed you to disable CELs for things like EGR, DPF, SCR, or TWC failure. They also went after shops for selling emissions delete equipment. Their logic is that all cars built for street use have this emissions equipment and you cannot do an after the fact conversion to an off-road vehicle not intended for street use. Cobb, Hondata, and similar companies have basically all revised their tuning software such that going forward you cannot suppress DTCs for emissions-critical systems, nor can you toggle systems on and off in the tune like EGR. You also cannot adjust OBD emissions monitoring logic. You can still tune these cars. But you have to do things the hard way, basically. For example Subaru FA20DITs used to delete the TGV system to get spare analog IO for a flex fuel sensor. EGR also has to be dramatically pared back because without the TGVs the stock EGR map causes bad misfires. Now instead they have to implement the flex fuel system as a CAN bus sensor instead. IMO, this is heavy-handed but the EPA in the US gave so much leeway for so long and the aftermarket relentlessly abused that leeway to the point that they could actually see the effects of all these emissions-deleted work trucks on their air quality monitoring for cities that haven't met Clean Air Act standards. It's one thing to have a few people deleting emissions on their weekend car that spends 9 months out of the year on jack stands. It's another thing entirely for entire fleets of tradies driving around 8 hours a day on deleted diesels that emit 1000x the emissions per mile of a compliant vehicle.
    • Hmmm. that's a tough one. There's a lot of history bundled up in that lot. Perhaps instead we can create a new pinned thread, called "Legacy Pinned Threads" and provide links to the these ones that will be unpinned in there. And maybe put the names of the pinned threads that are linked inside in the tags so they can seen from the outside? Or something like? I mean, it's half a step back towards having a more complicated forum structure, without actually having it. But there's a reason that heirarchical architectures exist. They are logical, and if executed properly, make it easy to find something without having any upfront knowledge of where it would be , and without using a search function.
