OK,

Firstly if there is another thread already on this, i apologise, but i NEEEED to vent!

I have never played the first duke nukem that created all the hype but have heard and seen enough screen shots to get the gist of it.

BUT

I am extremely dissapointed in a game that should have been released and target marketed for 10 - 12 year olds (other than the cleavage and sexual inuendo).

The game is just too childish and the effects are that of a gfx engine 3 - 4 years ago. Even down to the way the aliens die when they are shot is childish, like it misses a few FPS at the same time.

I have played about 30mins - 1 hour of it and I am about to uninstall it. I only payed $45 for it from ukgamer but i feel it is the worst $45 i have spent on a PC game.

Can anyone help me with this? Am i missing something? All the hype, all the excitement from the general public, but all i feel like i have purchase is a 'toy' game

fail.........this is the problem with all reviews ive seen on it. bar a few that have been good and knew what to expect.

didnt you read the million other reviews that say its not the flashiest game around??....and yes there is a thread to vent about duke already.

i on the other hand have been sitting around a LAN of dukes for the last day or so having a great time killing each other in hilarious ways. a feeling ive never got from a COD or BF game (which i also enjoy alot). to me this game is a perfect Duke game. sure its really late and a little out dated...but thats what was to be expected. but no way would i have payed full RRP for it. my 38 bucks was very well spent.

Thanks boiracer, always good to hear opinions from the different side of the fence so to speak.

I have seen lots of negative and positive reviews on this, as with every game, i take most critical opinions with a grain of salt as i would expect people to do with mine. I just needed to vent as i feel like asking for my money back i am that dissapointed.

What hilarious ways can you kill people? maybe that will make my game play more exciting? Probably the only highlight i have had so far in the campaign is using an RC 4wd to push a battery cell out of a room, which sums it up for me, that if driving an rc car is the most excitement, maybe this game aint for me?

I played the old one which was good for the time, the new one is way behind everything else, I was waiting for it for ages and was extremely disappointed, game felt like it was built in the 2000.

I was expecting it to be at least as good as DOOM was.

1 out of 10 massive fail.

It is a fun game if you dont take it too seriously but it does help if you have played the original and anyone saying they were too young to play it should be bitch slapped....you can still get it and play it through. Sure it might not have the shinny 3d graphics of now but its a fun game and if you were too young when it came out you should give it a play through. Hell i still play the original from time to time and the original doom too. They are classic fun!!!

The biggest problem with the new duke nuken game is that it was in development for so long that in the end they just finished off everything that was created years ago and sent it out. Im sure if a new game was created from scratch it will be a very fun game....we just have to wait and see if another one comes out

It does feel like DNF was released in 2008 though.

If you never played the first one you won't get it (I did, lots)

DNF now in essence mocks the ultra serious FPS games going around now fighting terrorists in deserts or what have you, MW, BF, etc, COD, whatever. The people who actually enjoy those shooters will most likely dislike duke as it's essentially taking the piss out of them now too :P

I actually waited 14 years via updates from PCPP mag and later the 3dRealms / DN4.net forums for this.

I suppose on one hand, it was great that Gearbox took the plunge to bring the game out, but on the other, it would have been better off stillborn. If it had come out at the same time that HL2 had it would have been excellent, however the gaming industry has moved forward.

They took out most of the fun things from DN3D, and replaced it with the usual dumbed down consolified crap; should have seen this coming from the way that George Broussard carried on and on about the 360 on his twitter page.

I was very disappointed in the game, which whilst it made me laugh (you kind of need to have an idea of the previous games to get most of it), was just plain unfun to play. I had to force myself through the rest of it after Duke Burger.

Yeah, I'd played the first game and loved it a long time ago. This just got repetitive... FAST. And would crash on me every 4-5 levels while loading the next one.

Ugh. In a way, I'm hoping they're able to get funding to do a new one, and actually make it... oh I don't know, good.

Now uninstalled, anybody want to buy it? Bought it for $45 will sell it for $25 plus postage (prob $5). I have used the key though, but did not register it online or anything like that if it helps..... you guys tell me, how many times can you use the key?

  • 2 weeks later...

When I bought this game back at launch, I only played it for, literally, a half hour and never touched it again... Until today.

I thought I'd give it another try and spend a little bit more time to actually play the game.

After having a decent run through, I've gotta say that this game is pretty fun. Sure, it isn't state of the art, but it does have a bit of a fun factor. All the interactions are pretty cool too.

Now, time to give multiplayer a go.

    • Very decent bit of kit. Definitely black it out I reckon.
    • Because people who want that are buying euros. The people with the money to buy the aftermarket heads and blocks aren’t interested in efficiency or making -7 power, they’re making well over 1,000hp and pretty much only drive them at full throttle  best way to way make money is know your customer base and what they want and don’t spend money making things they don’t want.
    • It's not, but it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity regardless. For example, what if the cylinder head was redesigned to fit a GDI fuel system? It's worth like two full points of compression ratio when looking at modern GDI turbo vs PFI turbo. I'm pretty reliably surprised at how much less turbo it takes to make similar power out of a modern engine vs something like an RB26. Something with roughly the same dimensions as a -7 on an S55 is making absolutely silly power numbers compared to an RB26. I know there's a ton of power loss from things like high tension rings, high viscosity oil, clutch fan, AWD standby loss, etc but it's something like 700 whp in an F80 M3 vs 400 whp in an R33 GTR. The stock TF035HL4W turbos in an F80 M3 are really rather dinky little things and that's enough to get 400 whp at 18 psi. This just seems unwise no? I thought the general approach is if you aren't knock limited the MFB50 should be held constant through the RPM range. So more timing with RPM, but less timing with more cylinder filling. A VE-based table should accordingly inverse the VE curve of the engine.
    • I've seen tunes from big name workshops with cars making in excess of 700kW and one thing that stood out to me, is that noone is bothering with torque management. Everyone is throwing in as much timing as the motor can take for a pull. Sure that yields pretty numbers on a dyno, but it's not keeping these motors together for more than a few squirts down the straight without blowing coolant or head gaskets. If tuners, paid a bit more attention and took timing out in the mid range, managed boost a bit better, you'll probably see less motors grenading. Not to name names, or anything like that, but I've seen a tune, from a pretty wild GT-R from a big name tuner and I was but perplexed on the amount of timing jammed into it. You would have expected a quite a bit less timing at peak torque versus near the limiter, but there was literally 3 degrees of difference. Sure you want to make as much as possible throughout the RPM range, but why? At the expense of blowing motors? Anyhow I think we've gone off topic enough once again lol.
    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power
