Hi,

I am new to skylines and this site, I have just purchased what I thought was a factory skyline r33 with rb25det. After looking at the engine bay, I have found two plates, one is blue from japan and starts with ECR33, the other is green and is an import plate, and the vin starts with 6E91MPORT - I have been searching these forums frantically for some explanation.

The car is definitely an r33, it is a coupe, it is automatic, it does have HICAS, it does have a FMIC and i'd say a turbo by the feel and the sound and the power. but the plates are confusing.

I know the engine is RB25 and 2500 I can read, I am just not overly mechanical, and I want to know if someone can decode the VIN or someone works for nissan and can tell me the situation, and why my important plate starts with 6E91 instead of 6U9 etc all i can read is that the car was imported 1998, and it says U.S import, but I am in Australia, this is all new to me, can somebody reply or PM me asap or even email me asap! I need to know if i have an R33 GTST and the plates are meant to say RB25de regardless if its turbo or NA, or if infact I have an RB33 GTS or GTS25.

I would like any help I can get, the FMIC and the turbo look completely stock, there is no boost controller or turbo timer that I can see, but there is definitely POWER!

the blue plate says ECR33 XXXXXX

then below it has model code

and then it says RB25DE - 2498cc

the wheels are the blue rim advan racing, not sure what stud pattern as I just got the car and wanting to find out more info.

are the pics any good? im sure it is turboed and it has FMIC, but i wanted to know for sure if it was GTST or just GTS with turbo?

Just by looking at the engine bay pics, and from what I can recall, those are NOT the standard hose clamps holding the crossover pipe to the throttle body.

You just found your answer. The blue plate says RB25DE. Its an RB25DE+T not an RB25DET. It was not factory turbo, but an NA gone turbo.

When I was in the market for a GTR, I found an R33. Everything looked mint. Colour I wanted, everything was sweet. First thing I did was look at the plate, the blue plate said it was an ECR33 and that it is an RB25DE. I walked away. What the hell is an RB26DETT doing in an R33 series 1 badged car with flared kit. People cheat and steal alot with changing engines around, putting plates on the car they didn't come on etc.

Yours would seem more true and legit though. You have an auto R33 gone turbo. I can't be certain but I can tell you 100% that they have fitted in new hose clamps which will lead me to believe the car is legit and that it was legitimately converted to turbo.

Its ugly finding things after you buy the car but what can you do, you will almost always find something. I almost bought a complete stock standard "never run past stock boost" r33 gtr until I squeezed the line and felt the boost pressure limiter thing was missing indicating the car has clearly been run past stock boost.

Shit happens really. Old cars, they have all been thrashed, boosted, driven hard etc. As long as she moves fine, you'll be sweet. Enjoy it.

whats to say that isnt an actual RB25DET engine that has been swapped in at some point.

OP:check the engine number down the bottom on the side at the back of the block below the turbo and see if the engine number matches up with the plate. if it does then its RB25DE+T. if it doesnt then its an RB25DET swap.

thanks, but I cant get under the engine to see, the car kit is too low, i have engine number on the rego papers all it says is RB25076XXXX - but the plates say ECR33 and RB25DE, and as i said its a coupe and automatic, im starting to believe it was a factory GTS25-S or GTS-4 and then a turbo was put on or yes an engine was put in later.. but the car went thru regency in the last 2-3yrs with this engine I know that much....

EDIT: oh and stop thinking it may or may not have been a GTS25T because it sure as hell wasnt to begin with. RB25DE clearly states this fact. the "T" in DET denotes factory installed turbocharger.

as has already been stated. get onto the nissan FAST thread in the general section and get someone to put your vin through the software

on the turbo side of the block down the back at the bottom there is a little flat bit with the engine number on it.

battery comes in the boot from factory in R33

if your blue engine plate doesnt have a T on the end of its DE then it came from factory as an R33 GTS25 NON-TURBO.

but remember, it may be an engine swap and not a turbo conversion.

that may well be a standard turbo motor with standard turbo.

EDIT: also looking at that previous photo of your turbo i would say regardless of conversion or swap, it is a standard 25 turbo.

Hey thnx, I kind of guessed it was a stock standard turbo on it, it just doesnt make much sense to buy a GTS and put a turbo motor in, or add a turbo, why not buy a stock GTST ?? and that means to me, the car is probably not worth as much as id hoped if its not a factory GTST but a GTS with a turbo? :(

hence why you don't just buy something out of stupidity and then ask the questions later.

I thoroughly inspect anything I buy.

Especially anything in this kind of industry.

But I guess you kids need to learn the hard way.

Nice attitude to make people want to stay and learn. As for why buy an n/a and convert to turbo, could be a few different reasons. Maybe couldn't afford a turbo model at the time of buying the car, and turbo'd it later on when they could. Could have got it on P's where turbo isn't legal, and converted once they were off P's. Or maybe they/a friend had the turbo gear/engine around cheaply, and they decided to just get an n/a and dump that in there.
