I love how hose clamp authenticity is now how you confirm a genuine car.

Thread would be GOLD if it wasn't so annoying.

i Just started this threat for some helpful friendly advice and information, I am new to skylines and my first one, so of course i made a mistake hoping it was a genuine GTST - shit happens, at the end of the day its still a skyline r33 and still a turbo so its basically the same as a GTST, :) i am happy anyways I got a deal either way :P was off an old guy, only got 180,000ks on it, pretty neat in and out, came with turbo FMIC, SUPER ADVAN Racing Ver.2 wheels, 3inch full exhaust, all the good bits to start my project off :)

LIFE GOES ON!

Getting a DYNO soon

Yeah, as long as you're happy with the car, that's what counts. If it's not a genuine GTS25t, just have to keep in mind the gearbox might not be that strong for the turbo motor, and might want to consider a brake upgrade to GTST ones in the future, depends how you drive. Bigger brakes are always good, but if you take it easy then you should be alright, but if you push it a bit, then you'll want the upgrade.

If it's still running 4 stud wheels and smaller na brakes, it's ILLEGAL and the car can and will be defected.

You're also driving a car that cannot pull up as quickly do its a danger to you.

You really should have looked before you rushed blindly into a buy.

This.

Legalities aside, it still probably has better stopping power than your average commo on the streets, so if you're just driving sensibly there isn't an issue. You just have to adjust your braking style to compensate for the power of your brakes (ie: brake a bit earlier and be a bit more aware of your surroundings). The only danger really is if you're being a twat.

Sure, researching helps, but everyone starts the learning process somewhere, and could have done worse.

On the legal side, I can't comment about other states, but in WA, so long as the car's neat and looks pretty well stock, if you have the right attitude to a cop, they aren't going to know that it's not a factory turbo, they'll just think it's a GTST.

oh, and another thing, if you have a crash, and the insurance company decides to investigate you and finds out that the brakes were never meant for that engine, then they will completely void your insurance, and you will not have a leg to stand on.

You'll be up for your damage bills, and the other drivers damage bills.

Its kinda stupid leaving the car like that. You've got a car that goes fast but doesn't stop..

What the other guy did was illegal selling you a car like this - and whoever road worthied it could lose their license.

^^^ been there done that, n/a brakes are useless pulling up anything over 180rwkw... they just cant cope and get way too hot too easy... 5 stud + turbo brakes is definitely worth it .

Stagea brakes aren't any bigger than n/a R33 really, and they are a much heavier car, and come factory with the turbo engine, haven't had a problem thus far in every day driving? I don't see how power has any effect on braking, unless you're using the power to get to a higher speed than you otherwise would.

yes exactly - not like it would happen often, but when it did it was scary, the entire time (6 months) I had it like that (180rwkw and 4 stud) there was only twice.... just for instance on freeway, busy traffic, ass wipes keep trying to get in front of me, slow down, speed up, (couple of times) slow down, speed up (and give it a bit so people dont keep getting infront), brakeeee and i still pulled up but no where near as well....

Hi guys

thanks for all the info.

the car has been through regency in Adelaide and all passed legalities 2yrs ago when it came over from VIC, so in SA its all legit and completely stock.

UPDATE:

I had the car checked over by a local import workshop and they said yes the brakes are non turbo and the engine is a DET that has been put into the NA shell as it has 4 stud.

Its not safe but in no way defectable, its all standard height, standard turbo, and as a guy said cops will see it as a factory GTST.

and powerwise is not an issue, its completely standard only 5psi, and dyno showed 135rwkw, so the power is not an issue, nor the brakes at the moment.

I understand if I was going to go as far as 200+ rwkw then i would spend the money on the hubs and brakes.

there was a few other issues with rods and rubbers that need to be addressed first.

THE mechanic says 135rwkw is fine as stock, but a dyno tune and change the ecu setup and the boost to the max of 10-11psi of the stock turbo, and I could make 160-170 rwkw before needing to upgrade the turbo or engine.

THIS is my first skyline and I wanted it stock, so i could decide if i would like to work it up or just keep it reasonably stock. I dont race or drift, I drive it around the city, on various car cruises and car scenes,

** I did not buy it to race so I am not worried about huge power, maybe 200rwkw - whatever can be done without having to change the inside of the engine or the driveline too much - that is all I need **

any more info or advice on what i can do next is greatly appreciated!!!

THANKS GUYS

Dude, just saying - any smart cop will see 4 studs, and turbo, and bam, you're busted. Car will no longer be road worthy, and you'll have to find r33 front hubs and brakes.

maybe so BUT it went through rwc like 2yrs ago and hasnt been changed since, and it hasnt been defected or picked on in the whole time. but I will take your word and hope. ALSO my rims you cant see the studs without removing the circle cover over the hub. but thanks again.

I'll take it as it comes.

Wasn't trying to be smart, just saying.

Just food for thought - I've just finished wrecking my 1996 gts-t, have a full brake setup for sale. Hubs, rotors, calipers, lines, etc. only problem I you bought it is you'd have to get new wheels because it's all 5 stud.

Ok thanks,

well its all new to me, so yes I have alot to learn, and I may have got stung but I did get car abit cheaper so it will be worth it in the end, but at least i know it is a GTS with a DET engine setup put in. and hub and rotor setup id have to get back to you on, theres a few things I have to get done first with the car, and I am in SA, anyways I will get back to you, if I was going to go down the path of the 5 stud and the turbo brakes etc then I would be able to sell the wheels to pay for the brakes. anyways I will get back to you if I need. thanx

    • For a daily just run Akebono ceramic pads. That's what they're optimized for. Obviously don't try to run it on track or anything like that.
    • Hey all, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before.  I have a 2008 Japanese import V36 coupe with nav but without Bose. I bought one of those AliExpress android screens, which for the most part works really well.  The only thing that doesn't work is the air con controls (well sort of) and the factory reverse camera.  The AC can be controlled fine but it doesn't report the change in temp and mode to the screen, and the volume knob/other audio controls from the panel don't register on the learning app.  I am pretty certain that the problem is the difference in the head unit between base model (Nav but no Bose) 2007-2009 coupes and anything after 2009.  Mine is the one with the blue connector all the way to the right as seen in this forum post:  The reason I think this is there is one wire left over that doesn't fit anywhere on this head unit, or in the factory screen which also uses different connectors to more recent versions.  I've seen the upgrade from OWC, and have sent the guy a message on eBay but no response yet.  I also don't particularly need the whole kit, just *maybe* an adapter for this one cable.  Did anyone else here have the same problem, or have any insight about what I can do to get this working?  I have been in contact with the seller but all they seem to be able to do is ask for more pictures and videos. Minor edit to add:  I have been researching and found a screen on Aliexpress that actually specifies my head unit in the listing, so these things do exist.  I will contact the seller to see if the wiring adapters are interchangeable with other screens.   Thanks in advance!
