Hey guys,

Its my first post so be nice :). i have just recently bought a 1990 r32 gts-4 for 5700. the AWD appealed to me. It came with some goodies but had everything on it to pass rwc (stock exhaust, stock airbox, stock BOV) did come with a purple adjustable BOV, 3" stainless exhaust, turbo timer and a pod filter whoop whoop. It also came with a nifty device called a torque split controller but i assume all of you know what they do.

I have just drove 600k's back home and realized that the back tires are suffering from camber wear and one of the brand new front tyres is scrubbing already but still probably legal. it was an interstate transaction and i still haven had the RWC done because now i know it wont pass. i have developed an oil leak after seeing how well a skyline slides compared to a commy (very well) and have found some really weird problems that i would like fixed and cant for the life of me work out. i have had a full diagnostic done and it came back error code free. I have spent hours on these forms reading about my problems but havent been able to help myself yet

1. SHOCKING FUEL ECONOMY around 225k's to a tank. I run 98 octane. i have tried changing plugs with a small increase in economy. the plugs that came out were platinum and the tips were all black. the diagnostic tool showed it to be running rich and for it to be leaning at very high revs. weak fuel pump has been diagnosed. fuel regulator was fine. i wouldn't have thought this would cause bad fuel econmy and neither did the mechanic. chances are it may be causing my next problem though. will get onto pump asap though as i have heard of many rb's dying because of detonation

2. ERRATIC IDLE AND STALLING IN NEUTRAL well as it says i start the car up it will flucate between 0 to 1500. sometimes when in gear it will just hold 1500. Possible AFM? no code came up but could be faulty i guess i have no clue apart from maybe fuel pump. plugs seemed to have made no difference apart from when they were first put in (maybe because it was cold). it did stall in the test drive right as i was stopping and just assumed my poor manual driving skills lol but i guess not. the idle was fine when i test drove it. Have changed the battery. No improvement

3. OIL IN INTERCOOLER PIPE well i have read that some is acceptable. but how much is some ? i have a small puddle on the top intake pipe i reckon its called. i will take a photo tommorow. the engine oil was very much overfilled when i bought it by about a litre. i have since fixed that with fresh oil. ran mineral oil through it with an oil flush additve for 200k then put nulon fully synthetic 10w in. would overfilled engine oil cause this ? hasnt burnt any oil that i can see yet which i am happy about done about 750k's with it and its still gold.

4. THE OIL LEAK. its just making the sump all wet seems to be just above the sump and originating from the passenger side. is there a common seal that blows around that area ? need to get all this sorted before rwc. will have a proper look over a pit but just noticed it yesterday.

5. ODD TAKEOFF. and just this once today i went take off and the would surge and every time it did the front torque gauge would jump to 50% is there a dodgey sensor that could cause this ? it happened for about a minute before i took

off.

Any help is appreciated. really just want to fall in love with this car like i did with my last one :) thanks guys

Well from what you have stated it sounds like the last person who owned this r32 didnt know what the hell they were doing when they overchraged the sump with 1L of oil -_-.

As for having a small puddle of oil in the intercooler its hard to say if that is normal or not due to the reasons i just stated i would personally drain any forms of liquid out of that vehicle and have a licensed person or somebody who knows something about cars.

Stalling, it could be two things due to past experiences. It may have a coil pack on its way out or just a simple dodgy air flow meter, an your oil leak just get that checked out next service thats nothing to out of the ordinary with a car of that age.

Thats all my expericnes anyway im sure there would be a few other people on here willing to self-diagnose your car.

The moment anyone ever buys a skyline you must change the oil. (unless for a very good reason you are perfectly sure its been done adequately).

Check what ecu your car is running because if its running a Japanese tuned ecu it may be tuned for higher octane race fuel and be the reason you get shocking economy. also get the 02 sensor and the afm checked out for this problem.

but yeah get the whole car checked by a qualified mechanic! That car needs love right now!

You need to take it to a skyline mechanic, not just any mechanic but a skyline one, someone that knows their imports.

Probably stalling due to the BOV, if you change back to a std one that will go away.

Its probably doing R+R and that is why it surged at takeoff, if it is overboosting on a std ECU then you will see R+R.

The bad fuel economy is a bad tune. You will need to find out what ECU you have and then tune to its potential. You will get better fuel economy and performance out of a nistune or PFC, but can make the std ECU do better. If it has a jap aftermarket chip in it then it will likely not be able to be tuned to Oz conditions and you will have to replace it or the ECU.

Oil in the intercooler pipe - wash/wipe it out if you can and then do your own test. Do this after you have done a service/oil change etc and filled them up properly [not over fill]. See what happens following that. It could be that that oil has been in the pipe for ages from a previous turbo seal or overfill etc. You need to see if it is still happening and then how bad before you jump to conclusions.

Oil leak I don't know about - could be as Godzilla34 said from overfilling - degrease and wash it down then take it for a short drive and see if you can find the leak? try to pinpoint it, do this after your service.

BTW looks good after a wash

Coilpacks probably on their way out with the lumpy acceleration. You also need to clean the airflow meter and idle air control valve that could be causing lumpy idle.

With the fuel economy probably it's time to change the oxygen sensor also.

You've bought into a lot of problems unfortunately, but most of it you can fix yourself and then get it to a mechanic to iron out any further issues and get it tuned.

Good luck!

I'd be checking the following-

• bad fuel economy- o2 sensor

• stalling- put on stock bov, could be coils, split in vacuum line, intercooler pipe etc.

Obviously your problems could be from a few issues but start with the basics.

If all else fails, let us know where you live and we can point you in the direction of who to take it to.

This.

Doubtful it's coil packs.

Possible ADM issue too. One issue will likely be your economy and idle problem.

It needs a wheel alignment badly.

Hey guys on the phone so I Wong say much. I have got the wheel alignment booked. I will investigate the intercoolet problem tommorow. We I changed the plugs one of the runners looked all worn away and had pieces musing I will buy some tommorow. I will try and get onto tune and oxy sensor. Thanks for the quick reply guys much appreciqted

how many litres of fuel were you putting in after doing 225kms? without the exact figure you can't say that the fuel economy is poor. if the fuel gauge is dodgy then you may be filling up when you still have half a tank and getting half reasonable economy. but i'd still go with the o2 sensor being the cause of poor economy, although if you are flooring the car everywhere then the o2 sensor won't help at all as it only works at light throttle (such as gentle acceleration or cruising at a fixed speed). once you get beyond a certain load point the ecu ignores the o2 sensor.

Full to empty mate just under the e. Interesting thought though ill take the fuel pump out and have a look, would love it if that were the case but in putting in about forty five litres and I doubt its got a 90 litre talk has. Will clean intercoolet out and gave a look tomorrow thanks find for that

Another thought is could it have been tuned for the three inch exhaust and the pod and having the stock stuff on cause bad fuel econmy ? Oh btw put stock bov on and my stalling issue has Ben solved, the idle is still moving to and down when my new fuel pump come in ill see if it changed it :) thanks guys :)

    • Hi. A little bit of an update. It maybe(hope not) looks like i would need a new tranny(it would be "maybe" a cheaper or better option anyway) So i need some info. I know i need a different propshaft(i can make custom one) LSD is not a problem cuz the engine will be still(for now) N/A RB20. So if i buy RB25DET NEO tranny...is there something else i need? I read something about push/pull type but i do not know if i need to "change" something or i can just plug n play onto my engine a go? Thanks for the advice
    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
    • My heads are cathedral port! It's likely possible, but I don't want to add any extra moving parts (I know they don't move) between the heads, manifolds, etc. It will also affect how injectors/fuel rails etc sit and I don't really know if it would change how the FAST manifold goes/sits/fits. I have the LS6 steam pipes already as I have a very late LS1 block so it should be fine. I couldn't find anyone who had ever actually used one for this purpose, it seems 100% of people grind the water pump. The thermal spacers are 12mm and are half way to the cost of the newer water pump anyhow... so if it comes to that I suppose I'd rather buy a new pump. The bearing in the pump I do have is a little.. clunky, but it hasn't done that much time and I never noticed it when the car was together in the past few years, so..
    • The bushing has failed, not all that uncommon for a car of this age.  Any mechanic should be able to push in a new bushing for you, or you can probably buy the entire lower control arm, complete with bushes.
    • Could you not use "thermal" spacers to give the clearance, like the ones I used between the blower and head? That raised the manifold height by around 10-15mm Albeit the ones I used were for cathedral ports, but I assume they have similar for rectangular ports????
