Hi all,

Just curious to know what cat backs are interchangeable for what model etc.

Especially with the position of brackets/hangers.

I purchased a catback a while ago that was meant to be for a r33 gtr but it didn't seem to line up for my car at all, the channel it followed was slightly off and then the hangers/brackets didn't meet up:

The day I was fitting:

So then I put my old catback on cause it wouldn't fit.

So I googled around to find pictures of my exact exhaust for another gtr model, came up with the following for sake. Suited a r34 gtr. At first look, the hangers/brackets would suit my car:

Closer of hangers/bracket:

from what I've read. 34 gtr catbacks can fit r33 gtr, just might be longer.

So I did a quick search to find r33 gtr catback images to see hanger/bracket positions:

No brand japspeed - tip but catback was in another picture, r33 gtr

What sparked this thread was a kakimoto exhaust in the for sale section, a r33 gtr series 3 kaki: pics of catback and closer of tip bracket/hangers:

If you look at the hangers it isn't positioned like the 33 gtr or even r34 gtr catbacks above.

The kaki is definitely a r33 gtr catback as the owner bought it off another 33 gtr. Both series 3(different from the rest? Doubtful)

My question is, are position of hangers and brackets on the car adjustable and moveable? Or how does it work?

My catback(first pics posted) is that suited to a r32 gtr?

Appreciate the help in advance.

Posted from my iPhone, so could be messy.

Hope the owners don't mind me using their photos.

I run exactly the same HKS exhausts on my R33 GTR and R33 GTST as the hanger brackets are exactly the same.

I also run a R34 GTR exhaust on my other R33 GTST as again the hanger brackets line up the only difference is that the R34 exhaust is about 75 mm shorter at the front. I overcame this issue by making up a short joiner to go between the back of the cat and the start of the exhaust.

Where I have noticed the greatest variation is in the location of the hangers that are on the rear muffler - some are closer to the centreline of the muffler and others are further apart.

This then translates to the "O" ring rubber joiners either hanging vertically on the wide ones where the distance between the hangers is the same on the car as the exhaust. On the ones where the hangers on the muffler are closer together the exhaust is held up higher as the "O" rings are in more of a horizontal plane.

Is it possible the hangers got bent in transit, or while being levered off the previous car? They arent hard to bend

Also, in the picture you have there of the exhaust under the car.. is it bolted up at the other end? It looks to me like it will fit fine. but if pushing it to the right to clear the swaybars/diff makes the front section not line up at the flange then buggered if i know.

One other thing. it could also be possible that the exhaust was made to fit a GTR with a custom front pipe set up that put the flange in a different location to stock. If it came off a GTR, then it should fit. So this is the only other explanation i can think of.

I'm pretty sure the exhaust you have is 32 GTR but I can check later as I have a few similar ones around for 32 GTR.

they are all slightly different.

sometimes it's not easy to tell visually from pics as hangers that look completely different may actually end up in the same spot if you know what I mean.

if you want to flog the one you have let me know, I had that same teardrop one on an R32 and quite like it. looking for another one.

What HKS ones are you using on the GTR/GTS?

My GTR came with a HKS Priest from Japan and I liked the exhaust so much I now have a few of them - a really deep note at idle but when you give it some they are not loud. A good example is at Eastern Creek at full noise down the main straight you can hardly hear the car from the pits.

From my experiences with exhausts I would say that there are five different exhaust configrations:

R32 GTR

R32 GTST

R33 GTR - R33 GTST - R34 GTR with short

extension

R34 GTR

R34 GTT
