When I was young I got into some serious trouble as I was a idiot, after the cops bashed me me parents bashed me, I learnt a valuable lesson in that, obey the law or face the consequences, now days if you raise a hand or your voice against crime you get in trouble your self, we seem to forget the basics for learning and punishments, if you don't get punished you don't learn, simple.

And people wonder why there is so much crime and a lack of respect everywhere you look.

We are only just animals in the big picture, the only difference is we seem to have forgotten that, and that will be our eventual downfall.

probably too late for that kid anyway, i remember racking some comics when i was 12 or so from a newsagents. lol the old, hide 3 or 4 in a giant magazine i am buying..kid at the counter just lifted the magazine up by the spine and out they all fell.

I was all like..."wow how did they get there?!' he was all like...."you better wait here son.."

cops came and chewed me out, dad belted me, newsagent owner let me keep my paper run job but only after a big dressing down..never did anything like it again!

this. it's pretty darn easy to sit on the speed limit without having to watch the speedo like a hawk. if you are worried about it then drop to just below the limit. they are speed LIMITS, not minimum required speeds. you can sit on a few km/h below the limit without really impacting how long it takes to get to where you are going (ever seen someone going flying past off into the distance only to pull up beside/behind them at a set of lights a few mins down the road?). i drive 62kms to work everyday and my trip time varies by about 5 mins (on a 50 minute trip) from my slowest ever trip to my fastest trip (other than trips where i've been held up by roadworks or backed up traffic at a school near work).

Driving near Gympie is a lot different to driving around Sydney. If you can drive in Sydney and not exceed the speed limit by at least 20km/h during a 62km trip I would be impressed.

To do the speed limit on my trip to or from work (M2) constantly would require I drive below the 15th percentile. Rather than the 85th percentile which is deemed the safest.

If you honestly reason that removing the speed limits would cause an increased incidence of speed differentials then you obviously do indeed spend most of your time around Gympie. The speed differentials are insanely large in suburban Sydney precisely due to the artificially low speed limits (artificial compared to the 85th percentile rule).

I imagine most people even on SAU have no idea what the 85th percentile rule is, and even less the general voting population. Therefore - more low speed limits to come.

you do realise that by "removing speed limits" i am refering to not having a speed limit at all, not simply making less of them? so in otherwords it would be perfectly legal for someone could go through a school zone at 8:30 at 200kmh. i'm all for simplifying/reducing the amount of different speed zones.

also my point about it being easy to not speed was more aimed at people who say they have to spend all their time looking at the speedo to make sure they go over the limit, because they have poor throttle control. yes it is easy to miss a speed sign and end up accidently speeding, but this is different to knowing the speed limit and accidently doing 10kmh over the limit.

indeed, and agree marc, some areas need limits esp school zones as long as clearly marked etc.

simplify things and make urban area's a flat 60 in daylight hours, a bit higher after say 8pm. As for freeways, ...go nuts.

40kmh school zones etc I am all for, 100 (even 110) on some highways is a joke. Todays cars (even 10 year old cars) are more than capable of cruising along at 130+. The weakest link is the driver, and IMO 110 or 130 will get muppets in trouble, plenty of people that can have a healthy accident in a car park prove this.

They took the NT's open speed limit down to 130kph, accidents went up. Its not the speed that was the problem, its the drivers who drive drunk in town, people on motorbikes, aboriginals sleeping in the middle of the road and the same with them packing 12 people into a troopy and rolling it on a dirt road. Add all that to the tourists who are not use to driving at that sort of speed.

An excuse to impose limits was all the road deaths, which were from drunk driving. That'll stop the drunks, fining them for speeding.

Most people drive to where they feel safe anyway, save for the odd idiot... Most people did around 90kph on unlimited roads in the NT.

I see it here in ACT, there's a few places where it's 80kph and people do 60kph (state circle in particular). But, despite this, people still smash into the guard rail on the off camber corner on Adelaide Avenue. Lowering the speed limit won't change this.

As soon as Australia changes its attitude to safe driving practices the better. Less text book drivers and nanny state limits and more skill and responsibility taught.

As far as country driving goes, I tend to stick to ~115 - 120km/h normally, but when overtaking then it is foot down all the way until I can merge back after the overtaking.

Drive as fast as I can (which actually won't be that fast since its pretty much jammed 24/7) & when I get pull over for speeding I'll just slip a quick 50 Yuan note to the copper & we are both happy.

Everybody wins.
