hi

so my little prelude through a head gasket and needed a new engine so i thought i'll upgrade to a vtec 'yo' and all would be good, so i bought me a h22a. :)

long story short today i had a close look at it and there's a chip + scoring on on the walls of number 1. :(

my question is do i need to get another engine?

(will try to attach pics)

better?

it has been honed, it was advertised to me as 'recently rebuilt' and 'good to go' :glare:

A bit better. Its still kind of hard to judge how deep the chip is. I would hazard a guess and say that you wont fix it by honing. If you can catch it with your fingernail then it probably is too deep to fix without a rebore. Notice how I say "hazard a guess" and probably"? Its difficult to tell from the computer. You will get a free opinion from a machine shop/mechanic and then you'll know where you stand.

how long do you think the engine would last if i put it together as is?

It depends how you drove it. The scratches don't matter as much as the chip. It could last years with the scratches and gentle driving. But that chip is the worry and if that chip catches your rings then it could be over in a matter of minutes or seconds. And needless to say if you flogged it then it it would be the same verdict.

yep thats what my RB26 looked like after a so called rebuild :( ...... had to get rebuild anyway i think you can still go over size pistons in it with a re bore?

depends how deep the scratches go, but I'd take it somewhere where someone can look at it in person. Better off spending money getting it right now then having to replace more things when/if it goes bang

Personally, no way in hell I'd put my engine back together if it looked like that

i wasn't going to put it back together 'as is', my old lady thought it would be fine, she thought i was just being pedantic (again) so i wanted a second opinion. :)

you let your old lady give you advice on engine rebuilds? wtf?
