Listen to them where though?

I've found that listening in-store (this is going back 10yrs now) wasnt the best way either because of the installation into the walls varies between brands and often specific brands design it so they sound better "instore" so to speak as the area you are in is much larger etc.

End of the day I ain't no audio nut :)

This is more to improve what is basically the worst set-up known to man. So anything i guess could be better!

Will def look @ sound deadening the doors though, 1KG here/there isn't really an issue.

in-store is fine, as long as you're aware of what you just said. The cavity behind wall speakers varies and may have fewer reflection problems than a door mount but especially in the same shop it will give you a good relative gauge of the sound.

Good quality speakers may sound thinner (ie less bass) in store because they're designed for a door size cavity not a wall size.

The more reputable shops (of which there aren't that many) will have a speaker wall that gives each speaker a typical door size cavity behind them.

At the end of the day the general rule is $ = quality. But I'm sure there are some shonky products that aren't worth the asking price so use your ears to find what sounds good to you.

Actually, the best thing to take is a CD with female vocals on it. Any speaker can sound OK with lots of bass on instrumental stuff or doof doof, but female vocals in particular are midrange sounds, not much bass, and they have more audio information right in the crossover region between woofer and tweeter. Listen for clarity and natural sound in the voice. This will tell you that the speaker as a whole is engineered well (cone construction + crossover design) and not just a cardboard circle that flaps around and creates wooly bass.

The best advice I can give is LISTEN to a whole load of speakers. It takes time, but your ears will tell you what's good and what's not. Take a single test CD with you that you are very familiar with.

I did this years ago and realised the following: Yes take a mix of what you like in the same format you would listen to it in, MP3 compressed sounds way different then a Shefffield lab gold CD. but remember the sound boards sound shite anyhow in most cases and most have lots of background noises from other departments , some have amps, some dont ?

Pioneer speakers are shit Really ? I doubt you have had a look at the new SQL range from Pioneer ? Ive had old pioneer's last longer then my car. decent for the money in most cases

Sony speakers are even worse Agree

Alpine is meh Depends on the range but decent overall / overpriced

Clarion is meh depends on the model, some are fantastic , some are blah

Boston Acoustics are really nice -> bought these ones Agree but watch the specs on Bostons, they are nortorious for testing SPL @ 1 watt at half a meter, not 1 meter but still sound nice and prices have come down since I sold them

Beware the path of audio nirvana though. I spent too much on the speakers in my car currently :PWhat brand if I can ask ? you can drop 10k in a pair of splits alone if you go higher end ? is it worth it, NO !!

like anything car related its a bottom less pit of money..haha

I use to have Rockford Punchs they went heaps good. but Type R was ment to the be matching form to punch.

Rockfords are decent, I started installing those back in 89...lol , and built a few rockford demo trucks.for CEA shows in vegas like most brands, they make entry level and top of the line,

but to get back on track he wanted a system for dirt cheap and sounded decent for the cost. ????

Rockford agaist Type R ? Alpine just has a better market share and is a much larger company but both companies make good stuff . and both of the speakers you mention are "MID RANGE" from the company. not high end

rockford is part of a company who makes some of the best brands around ?

Type X splits are the same as a other notable companies with minor tweaks. type X cost a bit more then he wanted to spend..lol

Ash i work part time in car sound at JB hifi

you can pick up a headunit with usb/aux for under $200. get some Alpine type R splits which sound awsome for about $200 mark and some JL audio c2600x for the rears for about $170ish

if you need anything hit me up and il look after ya

Which shop? Ill come down and break your balls and check out every Deck in detail :D

Deck is the most important part as it's gotta be functional and work well etc. Hence i need to "hands-on" and try it out.

Thanks Ash this is exactly what I am looking for at the moment. I still have the standard headunit and I think I have finally cracked it also.

I have found the Pioneer headunit I want. What would be the next step down in speakers from your $200 and $170 options James? Something around the $150 and $100 range and preferably not alpine as none of the online stores have em.

Maybe some jl audio tr-600 cxi there $163 I can easily do them for under $150, might.be around thr $110-$120 mark for rears front splits got kicker 11ds56.2 $198 I can do around the 150 mark mayb bit less..

But in all honestley from my point of view it doesnt matter if you get $500 speakers or $50 ones, if you dont run them off the appropriate amp, your basically just going to get the same quality if you run them off any headunit

No u dont lol. :S wtf... U can run a good set of speakers off a headunit and tune the headunit to run no bass off the speakers. Then the good speakers will go heaps better then ur typical shit speakers. Thats what i do for my daily. I run a amp and sub and let that be the bass.. But theres no way what u just said is true. I've done heaps of installs. just need a half decent headunit that will tune ur typical bass , treble and mid etc etc. Goes hard and sounds great... I've got Rockford Punchs and Powers run off a Headunit.

yeah obviously its not gna sound AS good as a amped speaker.... but it Def still sounds heaps good without if u go the right way about it.. If u run bass through speakers and the headunit then theres no way ur gna have quality.

Mmm thats jus what ive been told, but from what ive gathered..you buy yourself some 100watt speakers..all headunits only put out 50 per speaker (except sony 52) you wont be getting the full patential, yer it will sound ok..but extra couple hundred get a amp. But from ash was saying he isnt getting a sub..so like youve said, you can tune the speakers to not put out bass..that wont work with ashs situation. But yer all in all id rather get a cheap 4 ch amp

got the following in my 33 GTR

- Pioner head deck... mp3/USB/SD card etc etc--- $210 i think

then waited for the big audio shops in sydney to have their big midnight sales. Told the guy that I didnt want a sub flying in the back. This guy was a clarion rep and he said if u dont want a sub then get the following:

- Soundstream splits-- RRP ~$370... got em for $200

- Soundstream 6x9s (these have 2 +/- inputs that split high and low frequecy) - RRP ~420... got em for $230

- Soundstream Lil Wonder 4 channel AMP - RRP ~$450 paid $270 i think

he threw in an amp wiring kit for free

mounted the amp next to the battery above the pump.... took a weekend but did it all myself

sounds mint... the 6x9s are awesome... no sub n still get a good amount of bass :)

i think an AMP is a must to get the best out of your speakers

What I got in mine..well waiting to be fitted..

Pioneer mvh-8350bt

Jl audio c2600 splits

Jl audio c2600x rears

Jl audio xd700/5 amp

Jl audio 12cwo4 sub.. Somthing like that

Kicker 4 gauge wiring kit

Kicker rca's

Rrp $2400

    • Update for the sake of closure   Ended up getting the intercooler piping all sorted, new plugs and yellow jacket coils, and she was idling mint until it warmed up while I was bleeding the cooling system. Found the misfire to be localised to cyl 3 by unplugging coilpacks, ran a compression test, that checked out, then decided to get a mate to check if that spark plug was firing out of the motor. Upon cranking it over, with the injectors disconnected, the car actually fired and ran on a couple cylinders and heaps of fuel came out the top of cyl 3 I'd say that injector's either spraying incorrectly or spraying far too much, which is fine as I'm planning on replacing them anyway I'm planning on making about 250kW on flex fuel, and have a set of 1000cc injectors from ozautosport, obviously overkill but I'm planning on building the motor and running more boost further down the line, do you reckon they'd be too big for a smooth idle on 98? Thanks for the replies gents, much appreciated
    • I'm confused. You said you want to "remove the clear coat from most panels" but it sounds like you are actually doing a full respray? Few random things to add -  If you chase the blistered paint with 120 grit, I can almost guarantee you'll chase it down to bare metal (that's fine). But if you paint the car from here, you'll have nice little indents where ever the blistered paint was. The new paint won't magically level out the low areas, you need to fill them. Which leads me to the main point I wanted to add, make sure the whole car is flat before you paint it. All those areas with blistered paint you sanded out, make sure to fill them and triple check they are flat with a block guide coat. I'd also check the whole car is flat with a large block and guide coat but yeah up to you if you want to go that far.
    • 300hp (225kw) is barely outside the standard turbo's range with a bit of extra boost in it (200ish). If you are going to change the turbo you should aim for 250-300kw (330-400hp) to make the expense worthwhile
    • A couple of things, firstly omg that turbo is expensive! $3,000 USD for dinosaur technology is robbery. You could buy a G series turbo and have a good amount of change instead.  If you want a good budget option, have a look here - https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/ If you are keen to spend more, have look at the modern turbos, Garrett G series, Borgwarner EFR, etc. Have a look at the RB25 dyno results thread for inspiration.  If you upgrade your turbo to something that will support the 300hp you want and only "probably" have Haltech ECU, your car will only "probably" run. Actually, no it won't run. You are going to need the ECU and injectors at the time you do the turbo upgrade.  No thoughts on "this much boost" as you didn't say how much boost that actually is. Having said that, plenty of unopened RB25's making even more power then what you are chasing.
