So you can get rid of the A arm. It would be benifical in my case due to the wide wheels at the front. It'll probably be quite a while away though, if I even end up doing it lol.

Skyline-at-Dahtone.jpg

Today Biggie took the R33 to its final resting point. Dahtone Racing, where Anthony and I will be making the final touches to get this beast up and running again.

Anthony is going to hide/relocate most of the engine bay wiring, and we are going to fab up all the pipe-work, before taking it to the tuner to run in/tune on E85.

Onto the final stage

Trust-DD-exhaust.jpg

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, and this weekend I finally managed to “restore” my Trust DD cat-back exhaust.

First thing I did was pulled out the wire brush to remove built up rust. I then covered everything in fish oil and let it set over night. After the fish oil had dried I coated it all in primer, and flat black paint. I gave the tips a quick polish too.

It looks a million bucks compared to when I bought it.

With the easter holidays coming up, I figured it’ll be a good time to get my body parts all a similar colour. Last Thursday I headed to Peps in Wetherill park to get a can of Bayside blue (TV2) made up, as I was quite certain that was the colour of my R33. I left my front grille with them for something to go off.

When picking up the pressure pack, Effi informed me that it was close but they needed to lighten it a little. The test subject for this pressure pack, was my JDL roof spoiler. Late friday night, I layed down a tarp and started prepping the wing for paint.

IMG_1603.jpg

Seeing that it already came in primer, I just gave it a light sand and cleaned it up with wax and grease remover. Then it was the moment of truth, I started to lay down some light coats of colour.

IMG_1605.jpg

The colour is pretty close, it’s closer than what my attempt at painting the MX5 was! A little lighter would be nice though. I’ll get some more cans made up this week and take the fuel cap in to get matched this time.

I can’t wait to see it all painted up and on the car. I’m going to have a busy weekend ahead of me.

Rattle Can - Part I

Trimming.jpg

Today I spent the day at Dahtone Racing, fitting and trimming the body kit before paint. My first stop was Peps to get some more cans made up, I’ve requested for them to make it a little lighter.

If all goes well it should come out pretty close to body colour.

There wasn’t much that needed to be trimmed, the side skirts were the main culprit as you can see.

While I was at it, I decided it was time to get the skyline on the deck. So I wound the ISC coilovers to their lowest point. The fronts have a little more room to move which is good.

Slammed-R331.jpg

You might have noticed that the big Trust wing is no longer on the car, well I decided to go with my original plan. That was to source a kouki wing.

Paulie ended up buying the Trust wing off me, it looks rad on his car and should suit his Tri-spokes to a tee!

The R33 is starting to shape up well exterior wise. It should look pretty cool once it’s all one colour.

wide-wider-widest.jpg

Last Wednesday my long-awaited rear wheels had arrived. As soon as I saw the postie’s Van pull up I knew there were finally here!

As I expected, they do need a bit of work. There is some corrosion, the paint on the faces are flaking and the lips have dulled. Although for the price I payed for these shipped, I’m in no position to be complaining!

Lehrmiester-centre-cap.jpg

To refresh your memory, I sourced a pair of Lehrmiester Mystar wheels on Yahoo Japan, 18×12.5 negative teens … the good stuff. At least the centre caps are in good condition still."

lehrmiester.jpg

I won’t be restoring these for a few months at least, my main priority at the moment is to get the car up and running again.

My star

IMG_1670.jpg

It’s 6am and I can’t get any sleep, so I figured I may as well do something productive. I could finish painting the rest of the kit, but I think it’s about time I got the R33′s progress up to date.

IMG_1688.jpg

So first up, I purchased an R34 Hitachi CAS, as the new engine setup is using R34 GTR cam shafts, the pre R34 CAS isn’t compatible with them. The Hitachi is a much better designed unit though, these run a slit where it latches onto the cam, whereas the old setup has like a sprocket shape that can wear over time, and cause your timing to go all over the place.

Seeing that everyone wanted a bucket load for one in Australia, I bought it out of Japan for under $100 shipped.

IMG_1689.jpg

I bought an air filter a few weeks ago from Repco. I’ve decided to run it straight off the turbo for now, I may get an intake pipe fabricated down the line, it would have to be around the same time we get into the front tubs.

The good thing about the TFI Racing air filters is that it has rubber spacers, so you can use them on any 2.5,3 or 4 inch intake systems. They only cost $20 too.

IMG_1685.jpg

The R33 is getting a new fuel set up too. It consists of a 1.5 litre surge tank, Bosch 044 external fuel pump, and Power Enterprise 850CC injectors.

The old setup had Nismo 555CC injectors, and they would have been sufficient, but I’ve decided to make to switch to the wonderful E85.

IMG_1695.jpg

Last but not least, I scored a pair of R34 GTR front indicators for the URAS front bar. Brodie bought some Nismo items for his GTR and had these lying around. Thanks again dude!

I’ve still got plenty of updates to come, sit tight!

It's the little things

URAS-side-R33.jpg

This Easter long weekend, I spent it in the garage. Prepping and painting many body panels for that “beloved” R33 Skyline of mine.

Did you know it’s been six months since I’ve driven this thing?! It’s amazing how quick half a year goes by. Anyway, over the weekend I painted the rear bar, side skirts, mirrors, and boot spoiler. Unfortunately I ran out of primer for the front bar so I’ll be doing that during the week.

I was adamant that the colour was going to be way off, but when I put it against the car, I was pleasantly surprised!

URAS-rear-R33.jpg

I’m not 100% happy with how it turned out, there was quite a bit of dust build up in the garage, and the clear didn’t come out the best (clears in cans are pretty average anyway). I’m just glad it’s close in colour, that made it all worth it!}

Rattle can - Part III

your build thread is awesome mate, love how its gone from a daily driven/track star to a track machine! how long till you think it will be running again?

thanks for the kind words! , I only got to drive it like twice on the street lol :(

The latest I want it running and tuned is the 11th of May. Wakefield Matsuri is on the 12-13 and we are heading up to Goulburn that night.

thanks man! I'm real happy the colour is nice and close, it could be off with different lighting, meh f**k it :P

If you’ve got me added on Facebook, chances are you may have seen updates of me taking progress pics on the painting project I had for the long weekend.

I did take progress pictures with the SLR but I got too excited when I fitted the kit up, I just had to get photos of it on the blog pronto!

Anyway, here’s how it all went down. I started at 11pm Thursday night.

Sanded and primed side skirts.

I finished up Monday afternoon. I prepped, painted and/or clear-coated the rear wing, roof spoiler, rear bumper, side skirts and mirrors. I actually ran out of primer to do the front bar, hopefully I’ll get that painted this weekend.

All that’s left now (which is yet to be purchased) is a bonnet vent, and the widebody rear guards.

I’ll do a re-cap a little later on what I used, and how much it cost me to paint all these panels.

With Stadium Drift, Wakefield 2 day Matsuri under a month away, Benny Paulie and I have to get our shit together!

Benny’s decided that it’s time for more power, so he’s purchased a HKS 2535 turbo and supporting mods.

Paulie is no stranger to Wakefield, but this will be his first time going sideways on it.

Me on the other hand, I’ve been lucky enough to do roughly 8 laps around Wakefield. I did really enjoy it though, I’ve still got a few bits and bobs left on my car, but I’m pushing as hard as I can to get to Matsuri.

Bring it on!!

Triple threat

chillin.jpg

Today I headed out to Dahtone to work on the R33 a little. First things first, I needed to see how the new pair of wheels would sit on the car.

So I jacked up the car, removed one of the Z32 stockies, and bolted up a Lehrmiester. Brodie then came up with the idea of resting the wheel on a plank of wood. Anthony had a look around for one and we did just that.

Lehrmiester.jpg

At the cars settled height, the fitment would be perfect with the wide body rear guards.

How good does the wheel look mounted? I want another pair for the front!

poke.jpg

The Lehrmiester protrudes 60mm from the standard guard, with roughly -2 camber.

inner-wheel-clearance.jpg

The inner clearance is spot on too, roughly 60mm from the coil over, and 20 to 30mm from other suspension components.

Jeff and I attempted to remove one of the centres from the my-stars last night, but unfortunately the barrels have been welded together. It’s all good, I’ll get to restoring these after Matsuri.

Wide load

Anthony-getting-into-it.jpg

With most of the fabrication out-of-the-way, Anthony has now focused onto relocating the wiring within the engine bay.

The main reason for this is because the main fuse box sits in front of the wheel arch. Seeing that the R33 will get front tubs, it needs to be moved. That, and I like a clean engine bay.

Anthony is an animal with wiring, especially with cars he is familiar with. I checked in with him before I went to work and I was updated with the progress. I finish work, hang out at the shop of a bit and the freaking dash is out of the car! Anth was just so eager to do this wire tuck, it was good to see him enjoying himself haha.

WIRE ME UP

great progress im loving this build an the thread

when this is done its gunna look the sex!

dude love it!!

Thanks for the kind words guys! Good to hear people are enjoying the build :)

Since I’m rarely going to drive the Skyline on the road anymore, I decided it doesn’t need all those creature comforts anymore.

Out came all the carpet from the boot and cabin, along with the air conditioning, heater, HICAS control unit, rear wiper motor and parcel tray. The next step, after Matsuri is to remove the sound deadening, and give the cockpit a new splash of paint.
