Went for a drive this morning. After 5 minutes of driving I noticed that the temp gauge hasn't moved at all.

Pulled up at a red light and the car stalls. Managed to start to car but took some hard cranking. Once started the temp gauge jumped right up to midpoint (or normal temp).

I noticed that before stalling at the lights, I noticed the AFR were quite rich - around 12ish when usually they are 14-15 when I'm cruising.

Is this indicative of a failing thermostat and hence the car was running in cold loop?

something like this happened to me the other night, randomly stalled then very hard to start afterwards. still takes a while to kick over at every start, but seems to run ok while driving. I'll have a look tomorrow and try find anything loose

  • 2 weeks later...

Well this happened again today. Engine was running rough and spluttering, and stalled on me as I crossed the Springvale station rail crossing

Almost shat my pants as the bells started ringing...and I could see a Vline train on the horizon...

cranked the engine for a good 6-7 seconds and it caught on...limped into the Caltex and filled up on E85 (initially thought I was out of fuel but the tank only managed to take 68L before stopping so I would've had another 10L left)

started the engine again, temp gauge is dead. engine is going nuts, reving out to 3k rpm without me touching the pedal. Fun part was putting the car into gear from N to Drive when the engine is revving...scared the shit out of a few people at the servo...

Switched it off again and turned the engine back on again - temp gauge responded and shot straight to the "normal" temp position. Car drove fine all the way back to work...

Poor Scott - woke him up when I called him in a panic...

Do u guys reckon it could be something to do with the brake switch cable? This seems to only happen with u guys that don't have the switch

doubt it....

What exactly happens in limp mode? Surely it doesn't stall your car, make it run rough, or rev the engine out when idle???
