Hi Guys,

just wondering how many of you have replaced the engine fan with a Thermo model instead. For a daily driver, wife to work and back... Me having some fun on weekends..

Did a search for Options and this looks like the go..... Any preferences opinion on this?

And if so ball park cost.....:thanks:

The clutch fan is almost guaranteed never to overheat the car. There is drag on the engine but it is fairly idiot proof compared to some of the issues that can come with thermofans (from appropriate shrouding to decent thermostat control).

There are numerous threads in forced induction from memory on the pro's and con's.

To go against the trend a bit here I have a 16" Davies Craig & have never had overheating problems be it in heavy traffic, on the dyno, etc, etc

So many people on here (not saying the guys above) make it sound like it can't be done without issues but like anything, if done properly, it can...

I hope my post didn't come across like it can't be done, it can. However you want to go in with your eyes open as there are potential issues.

I would love to remove the clutch fan for a reliable thermo but last time I looked (admittedly a while ago) I decided it would be cheaper and easier to go with another stock clutch fan.

What thermostat are you using wlspn?

Im using this to control my thermofans.

On my 180sx I used ba falcon twin fans controlled with a greedy unit. It took temp reading from the factory ECU sensor. It controlled both low and high speeds of the fans and when aircon switched on. It lasted on there about 2 weeks before I replaced it with the clutch fan.

The temps always fluctuated within 10 deg where as the clutch fan keeps them within 3. The factory clutch fan is a heap more consistent and easier.

I don't think there's a Thermo fan on the market that can push the amount of airflow a clutch fan is capable of pushing.

I've used thermo setups before, and eventually gone back to the old clutch style fan. Simple and effective.

Yep, exactly what I thought easy and simple.

My 2009 ford ranger still uses it so... Why not.

@ 165 for a new one why not? Anyone had one of these go die?

Would love to know....!!!

No, as I said in my post, that wasn't aimed at anyone in this thread or anyone in particular, have just seen guys on here stating that a thermo will always cause overheating, etc & it's stupid to use one.

Just wanted OP to realise it can be done but as you say there are things that can go wrong or be done wrong...

When I first fitted the thermo it was due to cooler piping & I preferred the idea of that rather than removing the standard shroud or trimming blades as some people do.

My cooler setup has now changed & I could run the clutch fan again but currently have no reason to as temps are very steady under all conditions...

Nothing wrong with the clutch fan. It does its job superbly & is basically idiot-proof.

Fan is controlled by my Haltech (through standard temp sensor) with an over-ride switch

    • I couldn't agree more. As an owner of a built high HP skyline, I'd be a hypocrite to not buy a Hummer for the reasons you listed though haha.
    • Hahaha oh shit! Again!
    • Is this the one? https://jpjdm.com/shop/index.php?id_product=2192&rewrite=nissan-stagea-c34-rear-boot-actuator-assembly-90550-0v000 Might be worth having a look at yahoo japan as well. Though it seems a bit odd. If the motor works itself, other than being noisy, then wouldn't it be more likely that it's an electrical issue somewhere else? And it being noisy does not seem as surprising if it has been chugging away for months
    • I know this thread is quite old, but I found it, it helped me, but I also wanted to add my experience and troubleshooting finds to the chat for others. I have not been able to open the rear hatch of my 97 Stagea for several months. Figured it had just really sealed itself up over the winter and I would just get to it eventually. Well that day was yesterday. Some time ago, I noticed my battery was going flat all the time. It was frustrating. Then one quiet night in the garage, I could hear and ever so slight humming / grinding noise coming from the back of the car. It was like a really quiet popping sound or something like sand in a very low speed blender. I took off the panels in the back and noticed the noise coming from the auto close motor, so I unplugged it and the noise stopped. And the auto close was disabled. Well, fast forward to yesterday, I tried all the tricks with power and fuse and lock and unlock and I still could open the damn hatch. So I took off the panels from the inside and found the auto lock had engaged and was stuck in close position. When plugging and unplugging the fuse, I could hear the relay clicking. So I plugged the autoclose motor back in, and the damn thing let go. And immediately started making that grinding sound again. This time, instead of just unplugging the motor, I pulled the fuse, thus depowering the relay entirely. I don't have the autoclose feature now, but at least I can open the boot and not have my battery being sucked dead all the time. Not sure what caused the motor to latch when it was unplugged from the system, but I am pretty sure it won't cause any more problems now.  If anyone has a lead on a new motor, please let me know. It's a cool feature that I would like to get back.  Hope this helps.
    • Lolololol maybe, man I hate this car. Lapsed judgement a respray and a new motor, when I should have just scrapped the lot when I had the chance. Farken.
