4Th Gen Golf Gti's

Hey chaps.

Looking at getting something a little more modern soon.

So as you can guess i'm looking at getting a 4th gen golf gti (99-00 models)

So any expirences?

Horror Stories?

Alternatives (Audi A4 1.8T?)

go for it man, sweet little cars.

I have a few friends with them, from stocko's to GTI's to R32's.

but as with liners or any import. make sure to get one with low Km's to reduce the need to maintenance, as i would imagine its prob a bit more pricey on parts etc.

Whats the Difference engine wise between the GTi and an A4 1.8T

I had one and they're terribly boring. Axle tramped everywhere. 110 flywheel kw. Worst written up GTI VW ever made. Nice interior and well built. I do not remember my ownership experience fondly.

I've only driven the a3 and s3. The a3 was as slow as hell and felt like a quick n/a car and tramped like a bitch, the s3 was kinda fun but not brilliant

I really am just after something to go to work in that can be a bit of fun on weekends.

Surely better than the average Hyandai front driver?

Was fairly stiff, handled better then a Hyundai for sure. Don't go for to much more power tho, with the prices of better clutches being priced at the same price as a rocket launch, it's just not worth it

Fair enough! I lived in the UK and spent 6 years driving Vauxhaul Cavliers / Vectras so I know my shit heaps too...I daily drive a Mazda6 which I love as it is an honest car and steers really well. I'd track one of those in preference to a gen iv golf GTI. I also remember now it had a terrible gear change. Avoid.
