R32 Speedo Issues

Hey Guys,

I seem to be having an issue with my speedometer on my R32 GTST 1993.

Last week I pulled out my dash so I could replace my instruments with LED's, and everything seemed fine.

I put everything back together and it worked all fine for about 3 days, then one morning I turned it on and it just didnt work at all.

I thought I may have not clipped everything back together so I opened it all up and it looks fine.

From the back of the speedo, the small thin plastic tube seems to connect directly into the connecting hose near the dash, so I tried a few tests.

I saw without anything connected that the main line seems to spin when I move.

When I shove the smaller plastic piece inside it, it also seems to spin.

I put the small plastic piece inside the speedo itself and turned it manually and it seems to work.

But when I put all of those things together, it doesnt work.

I dont know if I am missing any pieces, or if I might have dropped something in the process, but all I have is the small connecting plastic piece, the 5cm long spring and the connecting line.

Would anyone know what might be happening?

You've broken the end off the speedo cable. The small plastic bit drives the speedo. It's supposed to be firmly connected to the inner of the speedo cable. When it's all assembled, there is too much resistance for the plastic bit to drive the speedo.

You need a new cable.

Hey Mate,

Thanks for the info, you were right, it makes sense as it should be permanently connected to the speedo cable end.

I put a new one in today myself, and for some reason when I drive the speedo needle seems pretty shaky (compared to my old one), its shaky all the way from 0-20 but always all over the speedo even up to 110 KM.

The cable looks fine, and I know I didnt crack or break anything this time.

Any thoughts on what might be happening?

was the new cable second hand? if so it's worn which is why it's shaky and low speed. you can try lubing it up but the sure fix is buy a NEW cable.
